Trade of 'dual-use' goods spikesTotal bilateral trade between Russia and China hit a record high of $190 billion in 2022, up 30% from 2021. Semiconductor sales to Russia from China and Hong Kong more than doubled in 2022 as Western sanctions took hold. Meantime, construction equipment has played an "underappreciated" but significant role in China's contribution to Russia's war efforts, having helped bolster its defenses against Ukraine's counteroffensive, Joseph Webster, senior fellow at the Atlantic Council, said. The findings add to the growing list of Chinese goods and companies reported to be supplying Russia's military, including state-owned enterprises.

Hong Kong CNN —China’s exports of two rare minerals essential for manufacturing semiconductors fell to zero in August, a month after Beijing imposed curbs on sales overseas, citing national security. In July, the country exported 5.15 metric tons of forged gallium products and 8.1 metric tons of forged germanium products. The curbs are indicative of China’s apparent willingness to retaliate against US export controls, despite concerns about economic growth, as a tech war simmers. Prices for gallium have fallen in China, as export controls caused inventories to pile up. The model is powered by an advanced chip, which was created despite US sanctions intended to cut the Chinese tech giant off from such technology.

Speaking of fighting, the IPO market has been KO'd since 2022. But that could change with one company's upcoming public debut. Even if it slightly misses those numbers, it'll still be the largest public debut in the US since Rivian's IPO in late 2021. The stock market recovered in record time, but then something else held up IPOs: VC money. Tech has already led the stock market for about a decade — starting when Apple became the biggest company in the world.

Here are 5 of the most obvious examples of how invasive species are impacting all of us right now. The authors of the new UN report estimate that only about 6% of non-native plants and 11% of non-native microbes are invasive species. CNN —China has launched a sweeping anti-corruption campaign targeting its hospitals, pharmaceutical industry and insurance funds as it grapples with mounting economic challenges and long-standing public frustration about high costs in the behemoth healthcare sector. Some areas have set up hotlines for phoning in tips about corruption in the sector, according to state media. At least one state media report has described the campaign as “unprecedented in the depth, breadth and intensity” of targeting the healthcare sector. Despite wide health insurance coverage, absolute costs of healthcare can be a heavy burden for many in China. “Given the economic slowdown and the shrinking fiscal revenue, the debt-ridden local governments really don’t have the capabilities to invest more in the medical sector and corruption continues to be an issue,” said Huang.
