Closure of Mont Blanc tunnel between Italy and France postponed
  + stars: | 2023-08-31 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
An aerial view shows the French-side entrance to the Mont Blanc road tunnel which links France and Italy beneath the Alps December 17, 2013. The 11.6 kilometre Mont Blanc tunnel had been due to close from next Monday for 15 weeks for works to be carried out. The closure of the Mont Blanc tunnel would be delayed for a few days at least, Beaune added. A decision on the rescheduling of the Mont Blanc tunnel work is expected next week. The Mont Blanc and Frejus tunnels are key to Italy's exports to France, and there were concerns that their double closure would come at heavy economic cost.

[1/2] Volkswagen's factory is seen in Sao Bernardo do Campo, Sao Paulo state, Brazil June 28, 2023. Demand for chips has risen dramatically in the car industry in line with electric vehicle production and the need for increasingly complex software. Volkswagen and Franco-Italian chipmaker STMicroelectronics (STMPA.PA) announced plans last July to co-develop a new semiconductor, marking VW's first direct relationship with a second- and third-rank semiconductor supplier. Volkswagen has not struck a direct supply relationship with TSMC - the world's biggest contract manufacturer of semiconductors - but meets with them every few weeks to communicate its demand situation, Schnake said. The carmaker also plans to reduce the variety of chips required in its vehicles to simplify the supply chain, which will also help simplify its software offering, Schnake added.

REUTERS/Benjamin Westhoff/File photo Acquire Licensing RightsROME, Aug 20 (Reuters) - Italy will put forward former economy minister Daniele Franco as its candidate for the executive board of the European Central Bank (ECB), a source close to the matter said on Sunday. He was appointed economy minister in 2021 in Mario Draghi's unity government, helping Italy navigate the COVID-19 crisis and the turbulence caused by Russia's invasion of Ukraine. However, in a surprise move, Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti decided instead to propose his predecessor, a source close to the matter told Reuters, confirming a report in Il Sole 24 Ore newspaper. The government had initially put Franco forward as the Italian candidate to lead the European Union's lending arm, the European Investment Bank (EIB).

Scraps of a rare 1954 Ferrari 500 Mondial Spider Series I were just sold for about $1.9 million. The buyer could end up investing another $2 million just to restore the car, a Ferrari expert said. In "very good condition," the model can be worth up to $4 million to $5.5 million, the expert said. The remnants of a Ferrari 500 Mondial Spider Series I were recently sold at RM Sotheby's auction for about $1.9 million, and it may take another $2 million just to restore the car to its glory racing days, a Ferrari historian told Insider. "A Ferrari 500 Mondial Spider Pinin Farina in restored or at least very good condition is currently in the wide range between $4M and $5.5M," Birner wrote.

CNN —Tampa Bay Rays All-Star shortstop Wander Franco will not be with the team during its current road trip due to the situation surrounding social media posts involving Franco, the Rays said Monday. Tampa Bay and Franco have mutually agreed that he’ll be placed on the Restricted List, administrative leave that allows Franco to not count against the 26-man roster. Additionally, Major League Baseball is investigating the posts, an MLB official told CNN on Monday. Neither MLB nor the Rays gave any details on the posts. “We support any steps taken by the league to better understand the situation,” the Rays said in a statement.

"I want to know where he is because I have never known," Navacerrada told Reuters this week at the cemetery of Colmenar Viejo where two mass graves have been found. A total of 108 civilians, many associated with leftist parties and unions, were executed and buried at the Colmenar Viejo cemetery between April and December of 1939. The exhumation of the first mass grave started last year with the financial support of Spain's leftist government and led to finding the remains of 12 people. "What has been said by the Tesla CEO (Elon Musk), whom I respect totally, is that they prefer growth to profitability. CNN —The Venice Film Festival has unveiled its lineup amid the ongoing SAG-AFTRA actors and WGA writers strike. While the movie lineup is filled with A-list actors and big-name directors, it remains unclear which talent will be allowed to actually attend the festival amid the strike. Festival director Alberto Barbera said in his opening speech if the strike is still ongoing there will likely be premieres without the film’s cast on the red carpet. In the meantime, producers can apply for SAG-AFTRA waivers so the stars of their films can attend and not break strike rules. Sumar lawmaker Jaume Asens has already begun talks with Junts on the platform's behalf, a source in the party said. Another PSOE source said the party would leave the PP to make the first attempt to form a government.

Europe’s liberal and moderate establishment breathed easier on Monday after Spain’s nationalist Vox party faltered in Sunday’s elections, stalling for now a surge from far-right parties around the continent that seemed on the brink of washing over even the progressive bastion of Spain. But instead of Vox becoming the first hard-right party to enter government in Spain since the end of the Franco dictatorship nearly 50 years ago, as many polls had predicted, it sank. The party’s poor returns at the polls also took down the underperforming center-right conservatives who had depended on Vox’s support to form a government. As a result, no single party or coalition immediately gained enough parliamentary seats to govern, thrusting Spain into a familiar political muddle and giving new life to Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, who only days ago seemed moribund. Suddenly, Mr. Sánchez appeared best positioned to cobble together another progressive government in the coming weeks to avoid new elections.
