"Feeling like I left it all out here tonight," said the 47th ranked Shelton, who is still searching for his first ATP Tour win. "He (Djokovic) has won 23 of these (Grand Slams), it doesn't get much better than that," said Shelton. Shelton came out guns blazing, with his groundstrokes struck with such venom they drew gasps from the capacity crowd. After holding his first two serves Tiafoe had no answers for his opponent's explosive forehand as Shelton claimed five straight games to snatch opening set. Another break at 5-2 and Tiafoe's fate was sealed with Shelton holding serve for the win.

For Rublev it was a familiar end to a Grand Slam, made all the more painful coming at the hands of his good friend Medvedev for the third time and second at the U.S. Open. Nine times Rublev has contested a Grand Slam quarter-final, losing each one with Medvedev also knocking him out at the same stage of the 2020 U.S. Open and 2021 Australian Open. "Just tried to go for it, tried to run, tried to catch the balls and he did the same." It was an ominous start to the match for Rublev with Medvedev 25-0 at Flushing Meadows after winning the first set. With the brutal conditions preventing both players from finding any rhythm, the breaks came fast and furious the next two sets.

CNN —Daniil Medvedev beat compatriot Andrey Rublev to reach the US Open semifinals on Wednesday, but warned that a player might “die” in what he called “brutal” conditions at the tournament. Medvedev triumphed over Rublev in straight sets, 6-4 6-3 6-4, but both players could be seen struggling with the heat inside the Arthur Ashe Stadium. Al Bello/Getty ImagesAfter the victory, Medvedev called the conditions “brutal” and explained that he couldn’t see the ball by the end of the first set. “The only good thing I see in these conditions is that both suffer,” Medvedev said during his on-court interview. I played with sensations.”“I tried to go for it, tried to run and he did the same.

[1/2] Ben Shelton of the U.S. reacts during his quarter final match against Frances Tiafoe of the U.S. at the U.S. Open in Flushing Meadows, New York. The 20-year-old will need all of his weapons on Friday if he is to stand a chance in his first meeting with Djokovic. "I think that it's an advantage with my game style, playing someone who's never played me before," Shelton told reporters. "I think that I can bring some things to the table that maybe you don't see in your normal match that you play on the ATP Tour. "I think whenever you play somebody for the first time and someone who has been in this situation so many times and come out victorious so many times, that's in the back of your head," Shelton said.

Sabalenka will play the winner of a match between American Madison Keys and Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova. "I'm super happy with the win against her... super happy with the performance," said Sabalenka, who lost in the semi-finals in her previous two U.S. Open appearances. Zheng improved in the second set, forcing Sabalenka to run back and forth along the baseline as she showed finesse to triumph in a 21-shot rally in the fifth game. "In the second set she start playing better, serving better. "I'm super happy that even though she tried to play more aggressive, I was able to keep my level."

A lot,” Osaka, who won two of her four major championships at Flushing Meadows, said with a chuckle in the Grand Slam tournament’s main interview room. NEW YORK (AP) — Carlos Alcaraz found himself in a hint of a predicament 35 minutes into his U.S. Open quarterfinal against Alexander Zverev on Wednesday night. At 3-all in the first set under the lights in Arthur Ashe Stadium, Zverev earned the first break points of the match. One more service hold arrived and, just like that, the set belonged to Alcaraz, as did, eventually, a spot in the semifinals. On Wednesday, he saved all five break points he faced and converted each of the four he earned in Zverev's service games. With Alcaraz serving at 3-3 in the early going, it was Zverev who buckled, missing a backhand on each of his break points.

NEW YORK (AP) — Novak Djokovic reached his record 47th Grand Slam semifinal, breaking a tie with Roger Federer for the most by a man, by defeating Taylor Fritz 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 at the U.S. Open on a steamy Tuesday. Djokovic improved to 13-0 for his career in quarterfinals at Flushing Meadows — and to 8-0 against Fritz, an American who was seeded No. Political Cartoons View All 1145 ImagesBut while Djokovic eventually got his shots straightened out, Fritz's miscues just kept on coming. The Russian duo have previously met seven times at the elite level, with Medvedev winning five matches including their latest encounter in the Dubai final this year. "We're really close friends," Medvedev said. You travel, travel, travel. Rublev said the friendship had become like a family bond after he was asked to be the godfather to Medvedev's daughter. "He's super honest, super relaxed.

I don’t know if the camera saw me looking up,” said Gauff, who was scheduled to play in the quarterfinals in Ashe on Tuesday. From the Biebers to the Obamas, from New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers to New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge, from retired ski racer Lindsey Vonn to director Spike Lee, the bold-faced names keep swinging by the U.S. Open. Gauff routs Ostapenko to reach U.S. Open semi-finals

By the time it was over, Ostapenko had 36 unforced errors compared to 14 for Gauff. With the win, Gauff avenged her round of 16 loss to the Latvian at this year's Australian Open that left the American in tears. Despite delivering a lopsided win to reach the second semi-final of her career, Gauff said she never felt comfortable on the court against Ostapenko. "I know the game she plays, she has ability to come back no matter the scoreline, so I was just really trying to get every point, trying to play every ball in," said Gauff. Up next for Gauff, who is the youngest American to reach the U.S. Open semi-finals since Serena Williams in 2001, will be either Czech 10th seed and French Open finalist Karolina Muchova or Romanian 30th seed Sorana Cirstea.

With temperatures once again nudging towards 100 Fahrenheit (38 Celsius), Djokovic turned in a cool, clinical effort, improving his record against American opposition at the U.S. Open to a perfect 12-0. "It's expected of course that people are backing the home player and there is nothing wrong with that," said Djokovic. On a baking hot day, 19-year-old Coco Gauff had warmed up the Arthur Ashe crowd, blasting past Latvia's Jelena Ostapenko 6-0 6-2 to become the youngest American to reach the U.S. Open semi-finals since Serena Williams in 2001. "As the song went that they played here five minutes ago, you've got to fight for your right to party." Djokovic wasted no time ending both those runs, breaking the American three times and then taking the first set with a booming ace.

NEW YORK (AP) — Coco Gauff dealt just fine with the heat, the humidity, her big-hitting opponent and the task of trying to reach the U.S. Open semifinals for the first time, defeating 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko 6-0, 6-2 on Tuesday. Her best Grand Slam showing so far was making it to the final at Roland Garros last year. Gauff lost that title match to Iga Swiatek and those two could have met again in the U.S. Open quarterfinals. “How do I find the subway to Flushing?” I asked a young man rushing past me in the terminal. He picked up my light blue suitcase and led me to the subway platform while I carried the matching light blue makeup case. That first subway ride was punctuated by a whooshing sound noisy enough that other riders began to glance in my direction. I realized it was coming from the makeup case on my lap. What could I do on a subway car with an inert can emitting a stream of sticky lacquer on its own?
