New York CNN —Disney CEO Bob Iger said Disney wants to avoid the so-called culture wars but defiantly pushed back against right-wing critics who have claimed Disney is adding inappropriate sexual content to its programming. “The notion that Disney is in any way sexualizing children is preposterous and inaccurate,” Iger said in a CNBC interview Thursday. Some Republican politicians, including Florida Gov. DeSantis has called Disney a “woke” corporation and has tried to make his verbal and legal attacks on Disney a winning political message. Disney (DIS) also owns ESPN, but Iger said that he’s “bullish” on sports and wants to stay in the sports business.

After two previous delays, Nauta hired attorney Sasha Dadan to represent him in the case. Like Trump, Nauta didn't have to post a bond and won't face restrictions on his travel as the case moves forward. Trump directed Nauta "to move boxes of documents to conceal them from Trump's attorney, the FBI, and the grand jury," the indictment alleges. Nauta is a longtime personal aide for Trump, who remains the frontrunner for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination. US District Judge Aileen Cannon, who Trump appointed when he was president, is expected to preside over the trial itself.

July 6 (Reuters) - Florida will no longer accept driver's licenses issued by some other U.S. states to immigrants living in the country illegally under a law signed by Governor Ron DeSantis as he seeks the 2024 Republican presidential nomination. The Florida law, which took effect on July 1, is "the strongest anti-illegal immigration legislation in the country," the governor's office said in a press release on Wednesday. The out-of-state licenses, designed specifically for unauthorized immigrants and deemed invalid by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, are from Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Rhode Island and Vermont. The list includes out-of-state licenses that indicate “Not for Federal Identification” or “Driving Privilege Only.” Those found to be driving in Florida with such licenses will face citations and other penalties. The law also prohibits anyone without immigration documentation from getting a Florida driver's license.

MEXICO CITY, July 1 (Reuters) - Mexico's government on Saturday slammed a tough new state immigration law in Florida spearheaded by Republican Governor and U.S. presidential contender Ron DeSantis, and the country vowed to help protect undocumented Mexicans in that state. DeSantis is seeking the 2024 Republican nomination for president, and his new Florida law, which took effect on Saturday, is seen as a preview of the kind of hardline policies he would seek on immigration enforcement. Last month, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador urged U.S. Latino voters to reject DeSantis, accusing the politician of trying to win votes at the expense of migrants. "Criminalization is not the way to resolve the phenomenon of undocumented migration," the ministry said, describing the new measures as driven by xenophobia and white nationalism. It added that Mexico respects U.S. legislative processes, yet views the Florida law as working against joint efforts by the U.S. and Mexico to treat migrants with respect.

CNN —A jury has acquitted on all counts the former school resource officer who stayed outside during the February 2018 massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida – absolving him of wrongdoing in the rare trial of a law enforcement officer for his response to a mass shooting. His attorney argued the then-Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy didn’t enter the building under attack because he couldn’t tell where the shots were coming from. And even if Peterson had known where the shooter was, speculation he could have made a difference is false, Eiglarsh argued. Eiglarsh emphasized Peterson was at the scene for the last 4 minutes and 15 seconds of the shooting, which lasted about 6 1/2 minutes. Peterson also arrived at the scene without a bulletproof vest or rifle and called for measures to lock down the school, the attorney told jurors.

Federal court records did not make clear whether Nauta had since retained a Florida lawyer and he could not be reached for comment. The front-runner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, Trump has pleaded not guilty both to the federal charges, which also include conspiracy to obstruct justice, and the New York charges. Prosecutors said Nauta moved boxes that contained classified documents so a lawyer for Trump could not find them and hand them over to federal investigators. Nauta and Trump are allowed to be in contact, but cannot discuss the facts of the case except through their attorneys. Legal experts have said the complexities surrounding the use of highly classified documents as evidence are likely to delay Trump's trial.

Ferguson Jr. U.S. Donald Trump aide Walt Nauta has been unable to find a local Florida lawyer to represent him in the criminal case against him and the former president over the retention of classified government documents. Nauta's arraignment Tuesday in Miami federal court was postponed until July 6 to give him more time to hire a local attorney to represent him, as required by court rules for such a proceeding. Nauta did not appear in court for Tuesday's truncated hearing because his flight from New Jersey was canceled, his out-of-state lawyer Stan Woodward told Magistrate Judge Edwin Torres, according to a court filing. Woodward, whose legal practice is based in Washington, D.C., declined to comment when asked by CNBC why his client has not yet hired a Florida attorney.

A Clinton-appointed judge struck down Florida's Medicaid ban on transgender healthcare. Ron DeSantis' office directed the state's healthcare agency to do an analysis on Medicaid patients who received transition-related medical care. Roughly 12,000 transgender patients in Florida are enrolled in the program, according to Lambda Legal, one of the firms that represented transgender plaintiffs in the case. "Many people with this view tend to disapprove all things transgender and so oppose medical care that supports a person's transgender existence." Hinkle, who was appointed by President Bill Clinton, is the same judge who, earlier this month, blocked portions of a Florida law that aimed to ban transgender minors from receiving puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones.

If I had to sum up the current debate within the American right, I’d describe it as a contest between liberty and authority. The dispute between liberty and authority has become a subtext of the Republican presidential primary. It also respects the free speech rights of students and the academic freedom of professors, so that the state doesn’t become the final arbiter of truth. The authority side, by contrast, believes that someone’s worldview will control our schools, so it should be theirs. laws and other educational gag orders, which attempt to tightly regulate instruction about race, gender, and sexual orientation in public schools.

As protests erupted outside a Glendale, Calif., school board meeting discussing LGBTQ+ issues in the classroom on June 6, 2023, opponents highlighted their concerns about teachers discussing sexual orientation and gender identity with children. Images: The Orange County Register via AP/Zuma Press Composite: Mark KellyA federal court on Tuesday temporarily blocked enforcement of a Florida law that prohibits the administration of sex-change procedures on children under 18. The opinion, by Judge Robert L. Hinkle , leans heavily on medical and scientific rationales to argue that it is unconstitutional to ban the use of puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones and surgery on teenagers who feel alienated from their bodies.

Judge Robert Hinkle said 'gender identity is real' and endorsed medical treatment for trans kids. The record makes this clear," Hinkle wrote in his ruling, adding that even a witness for the state agreed. Transgender medical treatment for minors is increasingly under attack, but has been available for over a decade and is endorsed by major medical associations, Hinkle noted. Hinkle wrote that the "treatments at issue are GnRH agonists, colloquially known as 'puberty blockers,' and cross-sex hormones." "The overwhelming weight of medical authority supports treatment of transgender patients with GnRH agonists and cross-sex hormones in appropriate circumstances," Hinkle wrote.

A bill recently signed by Ron DeSantis could shield space companies from liability in some cases. The Florida bill had already passed the Senate and House. It aims to protect private space firms from lawsuits and is among 27 bills DeSantis recently signed. The Spaceflight Entity Liability Bill protects space companies from being hit with lawsuits in Florida if passengers are killed or hurt during trips under certain circumstances.
Ron DeSantis, Disney remains committed to the state of Florida. Those figures have been repeated by CEO Bob Iger and parks chief Josh D'Amaro over the past few months, as tensions between Disney and Florida lawmakers have continued to ratchet up. Disney recently scrapped plans to open up a new employee campus in Lake Nona, Florida, citing "changing business conditions." "And this includes things like the transformation of Epcot," he explained. "It includes things like there's a new Star Tours attraction coming, we have a new Tiana attraction that's coming.
In the meantime, DeSantis has been flying all over for what looks a lot like campaign events. Experts told The New York Times his delay in formally announcing may be a way to avoid campaign finance rules. As he tests the waters for a presidential run, DeSantis has traveled across the country. The Times reported DeSantis has visited several other states, including other key primary states like South Carolina and Nevada. Many of DeSantis' trips have been arranged by a Michigan nonprofit called And To The Republic, which promotes conservative policies.
The NAACP on Saturday issued a travel advisory for Florida over Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis' "aggressive attempts to erase Black history and to restrict diversity, equity and inclusion programs" in the state's schools, the organization said in a statement. Under DeSantis, "the state of Florida has become hostile to Black Americans and in direct conflict with the democratic ideals that our union was founded upon," Johnson added. The NAACP's travel advisory for Florida was initially proposed to the board of directors by the organization's Florida State Conference, which voted unanimously in favor of it in March. DeSantis' office and the NAACP did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the travel advisory.
