And Taiwan's microchip production is anchored by the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, or TSMC, a global powerhouse. A recent report released by the Semiconductor Industry Association revealed that America's share of global chip manufacturing is set to increase to 14% by 2032. But the court’s opinion also makes clear that this ruling is not a death knell for Smith’s case. Smith charged Trump with engaging in a “criminal scheme” to subvert the 2020 election; Trump has pleaded not guilty to four counts. In Nixon v. Fitzgerald, the Supreme Court held that a president enjoyed civil immunity for all “official acts.” Now, in Trump v. United States, the court grappled with which “official” acts should also receive criminal immunity. In order to settle the extent of Trump’s immunity, Chutkan should expeditiously schedule the mini-trial to hear witness testimony and receive other relevant evidence from both parties. In response to Trump’s assertion of civil immunity there, the DC Circuit put in place a lengthy discovery schedule for the lower court to determine the extent of Trump’s civil immunity.

David Paul Morris/Bloomberg via Getty ImagesThe U.S. stock market has become dominated by about a handful of companies in recent years. Some experts question whether that "concentrated" market puts investors at risk, though others think such fears are likely overblown. The so-called "Magnificent Seven" — Apple , Amazon , Alphabet , Meta , Microsoft , Nvidia and Tesla — make up about 31% of the index, it said. Why stock concentration may not be a concernThe S&P 500 tracks stock prices of the 500 largest publicly traded companies. When there were big market crashes, they generally don't appear to have been associated with stock concentration, he added.

Violent crime and burglaries had become enough of a problem that getting an In-N-Out burger and fueling up near the airport was considered a risky endeavor. The city’s last remaining major league sports team announced in April that it would leave town after 57 seasons. All of which served to drive signatures for a recall election against Mayor Sheng Thao only 18 months into her tenure — a rare ouster attempt in a city this large. Then, two days after the recall qualified for the ballot last week, F.B.I. agents raided the home of Ms. Thao and stayed there for hours.

David DePape was convicted on Friday of five charges, brought by the state of California, for breaking into Nancy Pelosi’s home in 2022 and beating her husband with a hammer. The verdict in the state trial concluded a case that had raised fears of politically motivated violence in a divided America and reflected some of the darkest currents in the country’s politics. In the years leading up to the attack, Mr. DePape was submerged in online conspiracy theories like Pizzagate and QAnon and the virulent rhetoric that right-wing figures had for years embraced against their opponents, including Ms. Pelosi. The convictions by a state jury in a San Francisco courtroom followed Mr. DePape’s convictions in federal court last year that resulted in a 30-year sentence. Mr. DePape, 44, now faces a life sentence without parole in state prison, to be completed after he serves his federal term.

Trump’s out of luck: No immunityThe simplest outcome would be for the Supreme Court to rule that former presidents are not entitled to immunity from criminal prosecution. Nixon and the ‘outer perimeter’ of powerBut the justices could reach more broadly by granting some degree of immunity for “official” actions. That official-versus-private debate emerged as a key component of Trump’s immunity battle and will be closely scrutinized once the opinion lands. In terms of timing, a lot would depend on the direction the Supreme Court gives Chutkan in its opinion. It could also raise the possibility of further pre-trial legal wrangling, unless the Supreme Court explicitly ruled out appeals of those decisions.
