Violent crime on transit systems, specifically, remains an issue in major metro areas, with a report released in late 2023 by the Department of Transportation detailing concerns from transit agency officials around the U.S. about rising violence on their transit systems. Atteberry stressed that the ZeroEyes system is not designed to detect lawful, legal firearms that might be in a holster or packed in a purse. "AI technology comes from the data; if we do not capture the data, there is no successful AI," Dei said. ZeroEyesThe Las Vegas transit system is not the only in the nation to use ZeroEyes, but is the first to plan full deployment.

CNN —The Trump rally shooter searched online for information on the arrest of a Michigan mass shooter and his parents, who were prosecuted in a 2021 high school shooting. A week before the shooting, Thomas Matthew Crooks searched online for the date of the Democratic National Convention and where Trump planned to speak, as well as other searches for Trump and President Joe Biden. Unlike other mass shooters who often leave behind manifestos or writings to explain their attack, Crooks left behind few clues, in his bedroom or online. Investigators have focused on Crooks’ online activity in the months and days before the attack. He searched for the date and location of the Democratic National Convention, which takes place in August in Chicago, and for the location of the Trump rally.

On Friday, he went to a shooting range where he was a member, and practiced firing, a law enforcement official told CNN. Yet nearly 48 hours after the shooting, investigators are struck by the lack of leads they’re finding about Crooks’ mindset and possible motives. Investigators parsing through his online search history haven’t found any indication of him researching how to make home-made explosives, law enforcement officials said. While investigators had hoped that breakthough would help them understand what drove him to attempt to assassinate Trump, they’re still struggling to make sense of it, law enforcement officials said. But they didn’t seem to know much about what was going on in his life recently, law enforcement sources said.

Each machine sells ammunition for various firearm calibers, including rifles, shotguns and handguns, according to American Rounds. Earlier this month, the ammunition dispenser in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, was taken down and relocated by American Rounds. American Rounds plans to expand into more states, having already received offers from stores in California, Florida and Hawaii, among others, Magers said. However, the technician testified the items were catalogued separately from Baldwin’s case and were not included in the “Rust” case inventory or tested to see if they matched the lethal round. Baldwin’s team argued prosecutors did not properly disclose this evidence to the defense and asked for the case to be dismissed. In response, prosecutor Kari Morrissey said investigators determined the ammunition was not a match to those found on the “Rust” set and had no evidentiary value to the case. The judge has ordered additional witnesses to testify before she renders a ruling on Baldwin’s motion to dismiss the case. At opening statements Wednesday, prosecutors alleged Baldwin was reckless with firearms on set and violated the “cardinal rules of firearm safety” with his actions.

"We don't know if it's a live ammunition match or not," Baldwin's attorney Luke Nikas told the judge. The prosecution has said that the ammunition was not connected to the case and was not hidden. The issue came up Thursday on the second day of trial during defense questioning of sheriff's crime scene technician Marissa Poppell. He has previously denied the charges against him and at his sentencing on Wednesday insisted that he is innocent and was “wrongly and unjustly accused.”In March, a jury in New York found Hernandez guilty on three drug trafficking charges after a two-week trial in Manhattan federal court. He was extradited from Honduras after the US Department of Justice filed three drug-trafficking and firearms related charges against him in 2022. We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. When Biden and Trump meet in a debate on CNN Thursday, expect part of the audience to be wondering exactly who and what will come next. Biden, who’s battling low approval ratings, is sticking with Vice President Kamala Harris, whose polls are also bleak. There were 28, and we’ve had 11 so far this year, Bridget Johnson noted in the first of a CNN Opinion series about America’s preparedness. “It’s a measure of his hold on American society that he’s still revered a half-century later,” wrote Frederic J. The Supreme Court, in an 8-to-1 decision, ruled today that the government can take guns away from people subject to restraining orders for domestic violence. In particular, a 2022 ruling from the court vastly expanded Second Amendment rights and created a new test to assess gun laws by looking at historical practices to judge their constitutionality. Using that test, a federal judge had ruled that it was unconstitutional to take guns from domestic abusers. But today, Chief Justice John Roberts, writing for the majority, said that Second Amendment rights do have limits. He argued that the government has a better way to disarm dangerous people: by prosecuting them for criminal violence.
