FRANKFURT, March 20 (Reuters) - European supervisors tried to stop a rout in the market for convertible bank bonds on Monday, saying owners of this type of debt would only suffer losses after shareholders have been wiped out - unlike what happened at Credit Suisse (CSGN.S). The European Banking Authority, European Central Bank and the Single Resolution Board and were reacting to a decisions by Swiss authorities to write off Credit Suisse's Additional Tier 1 bonds even as stockholders received shares in UBS (UBSG.S). The three European regulators - respectively responsible for writing the rules, applying them and winding down failing banks - said they would continue to impose losses on shareholders before bondholders. "Additional Tier 1 is and will remain an important component of the capital structure of European banks," they added. The supervisors welcomed, however, "the comprehensive set of actions taken yesterday by the Swiss authorities" to save Credit Suisse.

Short sellers had amassed bearish positions worth more than $15.7 billion against European banks by Tuesday, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence. Millennium Management, Citadel, Wellington Management, Capital Fund Management, Odey Asset Management and Marshall Wace declined to comment. Marshall Wace held the largest disclosed number of short positions against banks, public filings from Austria, Italy, Sweden, Britain, Spain and Poland analysed by Breakout Point showed. Its shares were up 18% at 1602 GMT, in a broader European banking index (.SX7P) up 1.4%In the week to Wednesday, some 120 billion euros had been wiped off the value of European bank shares.
The selloff in regional banks is overdone, with four names looking especially attractive at these levels, according to UBS. While bank stocks moved higher on Thursday, volatility has risen this week. SINGAPORE, March 16 (Reuters) - Safe haven currencies like the U.S. dollar and the yen were in bid on Thursday on renewed fears of a global banking crisis, after contagion from the implosion of U.S.-based Silicon Valley Bank had spread across the Atlantic to Swiss bank Credit Suisse. The yen jumped about 0.5% in early Asia trade and last stood at 132.73 per dollar, extending Wednesday's 0.6% gain. "Given the elevated uncertainties and concerns about broader financial contagion, the dollar, as well as the yen, will be the main beneficiaries because of safe haven demand." The European Central Bank meets later on Thursday and is due to announce its interest rate decision following the meeting. The question on everyone’s mind is: What will happen to Credit Suisse, and who will be the next to fall? Fitch Ratings and S&P on Wednesday both downgraded the bank’s credit rating over concerns that depositors could pull their cash despite federal intervention. PacWest Bank (PACW) was down 12%, and shares of other regional banks fell again, too. Bottom line: Credit Suisse will probably need to be taken over (the most likely outcome, according to JPMorgan) or bailed out.
