Scientists have discovered the use of hallucinogenic drugs by humans 3,000 years ago. They believe shamans used drugs as part of rituals held at the Es Càrritx cave in Menorca. The cave was first occupied around 3,600 years ago, and was used as a funeral space until around 2,800 years ago, the researchers said. The study, published the journal Scientific Reports, found psychoactive substances atropine, scopolamine and ephedrine on hair strands, which had been dyed red. The scientists believe the substances, likely derived from various plants, were used as part of rituals held at the cave.

Under Hassan, Tanzania has returned to international engagement after a period of isolationism enforced by her predecessor John Magufuli, who cancelled all his ministers' foreign trips and discouraged travel. "Madam President, under your leadership Tanzania has taken important and meaningful steps and President Joe Biden and I applaud you," Harris said, standing alongside Hassan.

DAR ES SALAAM, March 22 (Reuters) - Tanzania has confirmed its first-ever cases of Marburg, a high-fatality viral hemorrhagic fever with symptoms broadly similar to those of Ebola, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said. "The efforts by Tanzania's health authorities to establish the cause of the disease is a clear indication of the determination to effectively respond to the outbreak," said Matshidiso Moeti, WHO regional director for Africa. With a fatality rate of as high as 88%, Marburg is from the same virus family responsible for Ebola and is transmitted to people from fruit bats. Symptoms include high fever, severe headache and malaise which typically develop within seven days of infection, according to the WHO. Equatorial Guinea is also battling its first-ever outbreak of Marburg that was confirmed in February.

Ford has struggled to get parts to come together at the right time to make vehicles roll smoothly off its production lines. Ford Motor has a cost problem—and that is before it starts selling many cut-price Mustang Mach-Es. Investors should brace for falls in Ford’s stock Friday. Before hours it was down almost 8%, following results late Thursday that fell short of its guidance. Adjusted operating profit ended up at $10.4 billion for the year, whereas the company in October said it would make about $11.5 billion.
Ceding profits to market share is an expensive game of chicken, analysts warn. This will be a 'pivotal year' for establishing customer loyalty in the EV market. Chasing market share over profitsBoth companies are opting to cede profits for market share in a pricey game of chicken, analysts said. GM – opting out of the pricing war for now – is going after customer loyalty with an EV helpline open to all electric car owners. But if history is any guide, more companies will join in the price slashing if their market share starts to slip.
Ford Motor (F) confirmed Monday what Jim Cramer has been speculating for weeks: Price cuts on its electric vehicles following similar moves by Tesla (TSLA). Depending on the models, Ford's price reduction "hurts our decision to own Ford," Jim said Monday after the automaker said the move will make some Mach-E trims unprofitable. Last year, Ford announced a split of its EV and internal combustion engine units into separate businesses — called Ford Model e and Ford Blue, respectively — aiming to increase efficiencies unique to each and maximize profits. [1/4] Ford Mustang Mach-E GT is seen during the Munich Auto Show, IAA Mobility 2021 in Munich, Germany, September 8, 2021. The move comes as electric vehicle manufacturers are feeling pressure from Tesla's price cut to respond. "Ford just cut Mustang EV prices in response to Tesla’s price cut. "Tesla’s price cut was a major blow to the prospects of competing EV models and the Mustang Mach-E directly competes with Tesla’s Model Y," said Garrett Nelson, an analyst at CFRA Research. Ford said existing Mustang Mach-E customers awaiting delivery of vehicles will automatically receive the price cut.
Nevertheless, analyst expect certain stocks currently trading at cheap valuations to grow earnings this year. These pressures have analysts expecting the first earnings decline for the S & P 500 since the throes of the pandemic. According to FactSet, analyst see fourth-quarter S & P 500 profits declining by 4.6%, which would mark the worst earnings season since the third quarter of 2020. Still, there are some stocks trading at cheaper valuations than the S & P 500 that are also expected to see strong earnings growth in 2023. FedEx is another name that made the cut, with its earnings expected to surge by 24% in 2023.

But officials acknowledged the situation was difficult, that street fighting was raging and Russian forces were advancing from various directions.

Data providers that automatically pull from companies' quarterly releases in calculating trailing price-to-earnings (P/E) sometimes bring in numbers that are not the ones used by Wall Street. However, for trailing P/E purposes, the adjusted earnings-per-share number is usually the one to use. The one-time items are just that, they can change from quarter to quarter or not occur at all. That's why instead of using trailing earnings as our yardstick, we use forward earnings expectations. The S & P 500 may have quite a bit further to fall this year, especially if the U.S. is pushed into a recession, according to Morgan Stanley. What Wilson sees in stocks in 2023 Wilson has a few reasons to again go against the grain. He sees the equity risk premium of the S & P 500 – currently around 2.33% –too low given the earnings risk forecast. "Our base case forecast for 2023 S & P 500 EPS is $195 while our bear case forecast (a recession) is $180," he said. "This compares to the bottoms up consensus forecast of $230, which nearly every client agrees is too high."
We're kicking off the new week by making some sales in 2 of our highest price-to-earnings (PE) multiple technology stocks. Our concerns around high-multiple tech firms stem from the market's challenge of correctly valuing them. Consistent with our angst over high-multiple tech stocks, we're selling some Microsoft and Nvidia . The former trades at around 23-times the next 12 months of earnings, while the latter trades at around 38-times. With expenses growth at tech firms still not aligned with more muted revenue expectations, our trims today hedge us in the event earnings disappoint this season.
Why didn't those who think Powell is a doofus speak up and say maybe he's gotten it right? Its market cap looks too big, but it might actually be right because of its service revenue. The rest of the market, including stocks like Micron, will trade as it has in any recession. But the bottoming process for high-growth tech is pretty unfathomable because it was never valued right in the first place. As a subscriber to the CNBC Investing Club with Jim Cramer, you will receive a trade alert before Jim makes a trade.
We're focusing on forward price-to-earnings ratios, calculated by dividing share price by estimated earnings-per-share over the next 12 months. In this high-level hypothetical, start with the multiple you want to pay and multiply that by forward earnings estimates. But now growth is less certain and interest rates are going up, so you think paying 10x forward earnings is too risky. Instead, you think paying 8x forward earnings is more appropriate, meaning you're only willing to pay $40 per share. Oilfield services provider Halliburton (HAL) trades at roughly 13x forward earnings, a valuation that we find very reasonable.
The announcement is the latest by a U.S. government agency to speed the shift away from gas-powered vehicles to EVs. New York City currently has more than 4,000 government-owned electric vehicles and by later this year says close to 20% of city vehicles will be EVs. "Electric vehicles, they are clearly the future," New York Mayor Eric Adams said on Wednesday. New York City has about 26,000 government vehicles in service. USPS said it plans to buy at least 66,000 electric vehicles through 2028 after committing in July to buying 25,000 next-generation electric delivery vehicles.
Our stock market comes out of 2022 better than any other. The profitless companies today — like the dot-com stocks in 2000 — almost all disappointed and will continue to disappoint in 2023. I had thought these people would come back to work when they realized that savings from the stock market and Social Security aren't enough of a safety net. Money will be exiting the stock market all year into the safer and somewhat greener pastures. On the tail-end of a down year, there are some stocks that might be cheaper than they should be. That has led to a down year for the majority of stocks — and all but one of the 11 sectors — in the broad index. But this sharp decline could present a buying opportunity, as some stocks are set to rally. Along with PulteGroup , it also has the lowest forward price-to-earnings ratio among the names on the list, at 6.2 times. Further down the list, United Rentals has a price-to-earnings ratio of 9.6.
