On Monday night at the 75th Emmy Awards in Los Angeles, Christina Applegate, a presenter of the award for supporting actress in a comedy series, used a cane and walked to the podium with effortful dignity. The 52-year-old actress, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2021, wore a red, silk-velvet dress, her signature blond hair parted to the side, cascading down her shoulders like a golden curtain. As she spoke into the mic, panic and determination seemed to be waging a battle behind her green eyes. Since her diagnosis, Ms. Applegate appears to have experienced some of its debilitating effects, and has said she no longer plans to work on camera. Each one walked a fine line.

The Emmy Awards ratings collapse continues. An audience of 4.3 million people watched the Emmys on Fox on Monday night, the lowest viewership since records have been kept, according to preliminary Nielsen data. In 2022, the Emmys garnered 5.9 million viewers, the previous low. The ratings have put the Emmys dangerously close to the Tony Awards, which for decades has drawn a significantly smaller audience. But in June, 4.3 million people tuned into the Tonys, an increase from its previous ceremony.

“The Bear” had a bearish night indeed, fully dominating the comedy category in its first season, winning the top prize and three acting awards. And the chaotic, darkly humorous “Beef” was the other big victor, winning best limited series, with leads Steven Yeun and Ali Wong becoming the first Asian Americans to win in their categories. As “Succession” cast members marched up to the Emmy stage on Monday night to grab their statues for the show’s final season, they used it as one last opportunity to say goodbye. Kieran Culkin, after kissing his co-star Brian Cox on the lips, gave a tearful speech while accepting the award for best actor in a drama. Matthew Macfadyen and Sarah Snook, who each won acting awards as well, gave loving tributes to fellow cast members. And Jesse Armstrong, the creator of “Succession,” capped off the night by accepting the best drama award for the third and final time and noting: “We can now depart the stage.”It all punctuated an end-of-era feeling at the Emmy Awards on Monday night. The ceremony felt in many ways like a book end to the so-called Peak TV era itself.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Emmy Awards telecast on Fox reached a record low audience of 4.3 million viewers, as the long-term trend of diminishing ratings for the show continues. That show, which honored both TV and movies and had bigger stars in attendance including Taylor Swift, had 9.4 million viewers. The height-of-the-pandemic Emmys in 2020 on ABC, with no in-person audience and remote nominees, set a new low at the time with 6.1 million viewers, but the show bounced back the following year with 7.4 million for CBS. The last time the Emmys reached more than 10 million viewers was 2018, when it drew in 10.2 million. The show had 21.8 million viewers in 2000, a level it's unlikely ever to reach again.

As he was working on a script with screenwriter Hanna Fiddell about a prostitute forced into witness protection, Chase told The Times that he was told "the unfortunate truth" that the script was too complicated. The 75th Primetime Emmy Awards are arriving four months past their due date on Monday night at the Peacock Theater, coming after a year of historic Hollywood turbulence in an industry whose upheavals are evident everywhere. Anderson has been tasked with hosting at a time when emceeing awards shows is hardly a coveted job, especially after comic Jo Koy was widely roasted for his Golden Globes performance last weekend. Both could make history, with Pascal becoming the first Latino to win best actor in a drama and Ramsey the youngest to win best actress. “The Bear” is up for Emmys for its first season, after having already won key Golden Globes for its second. ---For more on this year’s Emmy Awards, visit: https://apnews.com/hub/emmy-awards

Television’s big night is finally here. Last summer, one day after the 75th Emmy Award nominations were announced, the Screen Actors Guild voted to strike, postponing the ceremony to January. Both the Golden Globes and last night’s Critics Choice Awards mix the worlds of film and television, but the Emmy Awards gives the small screen its due. Cut to today: Will “Succession” follow its big wins from the Globes tonight? But for now, one of the best things about the back-to-back awards shows is seeing what the celebrities are bringing to the red carpet.

Though the carpet was gray, there was no shortage of red, a color that also proved quite popular at the Golden Globes this month. (Ms. Waterhouse’s sat beneath her baby bump.) The ceremony was honoring television programs broadcast last year, which gave viewers a chance to catch up with casts like that of “White Lotus” season two. Before there was a Peak TV era, before there were performances from Mary Tyler Moore, Cloris Leachman or Julia Louis-Dreyfus, there was Judy Splinters. “Judy Splinters,” a children’s television show hosted by a 20-year-old ventriloquist named Shirley Dinsdale and her puppet — wait for it — Judy Splinters, was nominated for the so-called most popular program at the very first Emmy Awards. All nominated shows had to have been filmed in Los Angeles, and the award show itself was only broadcast on a local station in Los Angeles. “It was so brand-new,” Dinsdale told The Los Angeles Times in 1998.
