MEXICO CITY, Dec 16 (Reuters) - On the northern flank of the bustling hubbub of Mexico City, white American pelicans paddle on the waters of a lake after traveling thousands of miles from the United States and Canada to escape the bite of a northern winter. Part of migratory flocks that come to Mexico every year to feed and rest, the pelicans began stopping at the lake at Bosque San Juan de Aragon after the city and scientists a decade ago began creating nearby wetlands to revive the local environment. REUTERS/Raquel Cunha 1 2 3 4 5Growing out of a initiative between the National Autonomous University of Mexico and the Mexico City government to clean up local water supply by creating a wetland in 2010, the cleaned up water refuge was designed to attract wild life. To visitors, it is a reminder that Mexico City has more to offer than building sites and traffic jams.

Emily Brill might be the most hated woman in the pet industry. Now, Brill — the preppy blond daughter of the media magnate Steven Brill — is reinventing herself as the founder of the dog-centric publication The Canine Review. Courtesy of Emily Brill Show less One reader even threatened to cancel their subscription because of the so-called bird-massacre photo shoot. Courtesy of Emily Brill Show less Brill says the photos reassure readers that "I'm not a stereotypical sort of Manhattan, head-up-my-ass, agenda, PETA person." It isn't a bad start, but "she's got a long way to go to make it really thrive," Steven Brill told Insider.
Published in Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution scientific journal on Wednesday, the study reveals that the great bustards ate an abundance of corn poppies (Papaver rhoeas) and purple viper’s bugloss (Echium plantagineum). In humans, corn poppies have been used for their medicinal properties as a sedative and pain relief while purple viper’s bugloss can be toxic if consumed. Both plants were highly effective in killing or inhibiting the effects of the protozoa and nematodes, according to the study. The purple viper’s bugloss showed moderate defensive action against the fungi. “We normally associate self-medication in species like primates, so to see researchers studying endangered birds is brilliant,” Rose told CNN.
Egg shortages could be on the cards as avian flu sweeps through Europe. LONDON — The classic English fry-up and traditional Christmas turkey dinner could be under threat as Britain deals with the impact of rising cases of avian flu. Governments across Europe have culled bird populations to limit the spread of avian flu. Almost six million birds have been killed in the Netherlands since October 2021, while Spain, Bulgaria, Denmark and France have also been badly affected. Nearly 50 million birds have been killed in Europe this year as countries try to contain the disease, according to the EU's Food Safety Agency.
Elon Musk and Jack Dorsey failed to see eye-to-eye on the name of a Twitter feature that flags misleading posts. Musk renamed Birdwatch to Community Notes but Dorsey said it was "the most boring Facebook name." It was first piloted in 2021, but Musk said on Saturday he wanted to rename Birdwatch to "Community Notes." Musk replied: "As judged by the people of Twitter via Community Notes (formerly Birdwatch)." "Community notes is the most boring Facebook name ever," Dorsey said in response to Musk.
World’s best spicy foods: 20 dishes to try

When it comes to the world’s best spicy dishes, we have some of the world’s hottest peppers to thank, along with incredible layers of flavor and a long, spice-loving human history. Peppers – a headliner for heat – are rated on the Scoville Heat Units scale, which measures capsaicin and other active components of chile peppers. And it’s the perky red pepper of the same name that brings the spiciness to this complex, layered and delicious dish. “The peperoncino (red chile pepper) is what makes this sauce ‘angry’ (arrabbiata) or spicy,” Chris MacLean of Italy-based Open Tuesday Wines said via email. FomaA/Adobe StockThe fiery Ethiopian spice blend called berbere – aromatic with chile peppers, basil, cardamom, garlic and ginger – is instrumental to the flavor chorus that’s doro wat, Ethiopia’s much-loved spicy chicken stew.

"Look we all love Emmanuel the Emu but he has avian flu. Avian flu experts, too, said touching an infected emu isn't advisable, given that the virus can jump from animals to humans in rare cases. H5N1, the bird flu strain currently spreading, is highly contagious among birds, and it can be deadly to them. "Once an avian virus can move to mammals, now we’re in the realm of 'Yeah, we better be careful.'" All three experts said scientists are watching this bird flu closely even though the risk to humans is low.
TikTok Star Emmanuel the Emu Is Sick With Avian Flu

A TikTok-famous emu is sick with the avian flu, which killed nearly all the other birds on the Florida farm it lives on. The emu, named Emmanuel, racked up millions of views on TikTok over the summer after it pecked and dropped a phone while owner Taylor Blake filmed a video about life on the farm. In other TikTok clips, the brown-eyed bird walks into shots, approaches the camera and gets a scolding from Ms. Blake. “Emmanuel!,” she shouted in a July video with more than 9.6 million views. “Don’t choose violence today!”
TikTok star Emmanuel the emu is battling Avian Influenza, his caretaker, Taylor Blake, tweeted Saturday. The virus has now claimed the lives of 99% of the farm's birds and left Emmanuel fighting for his life since Wednesday. "I will do anything and go into any amount of debt to save his life," Blake tweeted about her best friend. On Sunday, Blake tweeted that Emmanuel is making progress -- sitting up by himself, taking backwards steps and putting pressure on his right foot. “Emmanuel, don’t do it!” Blake often says to the emu when he crosses in front of her and the iPhone camera.
