LONDON, July 5 (Reuters) - A lack of data on electric vehicle (EV) batteries continues to challenge insurers who are forced to scrap EVs after mild accidents, potentially undermining EV adoption, Thatcham Research said on Wednesday. Adrian Watson, Thatcham's head of engineering research, said in an ideal world insurers could make informed decisions about whether to repair EVs or write it off based on access to data on its state of health after an accident. "The diagnostics we have do not enable you to really know what the status of the battery is." Due to their potential fire risk, damaged EVs awaiting repair must be stored outside at least 15 metres (49 ft) from other objects. An outside facility for 100 fossil-fuel cars today would have space to safely quarantine just two EVs, Thatcham said.

GM said Algolion's software will help the Detroit automaker bring to the market a "cost-effective" early hazard detection system at a quicker pace. It also comes as safety authorities urge U.S. automakers to improve battery standards after a series of events where vehicles have caught fire due to defective modules. Algolion has developed a software that uses data from EV battery management systems to help identify anomalies in cell performance and provide early detection of battery hazards including "thermal runaway propagation events", GM said. A thermal runaway is a rapid and unstoppable increase in temperature that leads to fires in EVs.

A viral video of a Russian Lancet drone strike claimed to show a Ukrainian tank being destroyed. The "tank" was made of empty boxes from 155 mm shells, Lt Cmdr Oleksandr Afanasyev told Insider. The "tank" was a decoy made out of wood, according to Ukraine's Lieutenant Commander Oleksandr Afanasyev. The left-hand image below shows the decoy, Afanasyev said.
