On the night of June 10 at the majestic Gorge Amphitheater in George, Wash., on the lip of the Columbia River, the 79-year-old singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell played her first headlining show in 23 years. Her appearance had the air of a comet’s return: rare, breathlessly awaited and well worth camping out all night. That many concertgoers had traveled long distances made the experience feel all the more like a Mitchell song — perhaps one of the poetic highway travelogues recorded on her 1976 album “Hejira,” or even one of the romantic, intercontinental voyages she sang about on her 1971 landmark “Blue.” It was a crowd dotted with tie-dye and graying braids, yes, but also one full of lifelong friends reunited, mothers and children bonding over intergenerational musical tastes and enough homemade Mitchell T-shirts to rival Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour. As Mitchell said to the adoring crowd as it held glowing cellphone lights aloft, paraphrasing one of her most memorable songs, “You’re stardust, and golden.”

These Flies Age Faster After Witnessing Death

Dr. Pletcher and Dr. Gendron found that flies that had seen corpses were avoided by other flies, as if they’d been marked by death (how this works is still a mystery). The two scientists housed living flies in vials with fly cadavers for two days, and tracked their brain activity with a fluorescent green dye. Dr. Gendron and Dr. Pletcher then identified the key neurons in the ellipsoid body. When these were shut off, seeing dead flies did nothing to the life span of the living. When the researchers activated those neuron clusters, flies met their maker sooner, even if they had never been exposed to dead flies.

Apple’s new challenge: making VR headsets look cool
  + stars: | 2023-06-10 | by ( Jennifer Korn | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
But behind this speculation is a more serious potential problem: even Apple may struggle to make VR headsets look cool. The new headset, which blends both virtual reality and augmented reality, is Apple’s most ambitious – and riskiest – new hardware product in years. In one early marketing image, a woman is shown wearing the headset while dressed in very chic clothing and lounging in an upscale living room. Apple’s silhouette ads in the early 2000s somehow managed to make not just iPods look cool, but also wired headphones. The Vision Pro has two hours of use with an external battery, which Apple said would reduce the weight on the user's head. Investors and tech fans alike are focused on how much Apple's view of the virtual reality market overlaps with Meta's. In addition to Meta, Sony Group Corp (6758.T) and ByteDance-owned Pico both recently released virtual reality devices.

Apple announced its Vision Pro headset on Monday at the company's WWDC 2023. Vision Pro will cost $3,499 and is set to become available early next year. When someone approaches a Vision Pro user, the headset brings them into the user's field of vision, while at the same time displaying the user's eyes. At the moment EyeSight is not currently available in competitors, like Meta's Quest 3, which was announced just days before Apple's Vision Pro. Apple said Monday Vision Pro will be available in early 2024, while the Quest 3 comes out this fall.

Summer is back, and so is this nostalgic beauty staple

Summer is the season of Sun-In, a hair lightening spray that’s been birthing beach blondes (and beach oranges) for decades. As with all effectively marketed beauty products, Sun-In didn’t just promise lighter hair: It promised a perfect summer. “Just spray Sun-In under the sun, and see what happens,” a 1971 ad from Glamour Magazine reads. Other hair lightening sprays have come and gone, like Clairol’s Lemon Go Lightly, but Sun-In occupies a singular place in people’s hair memories. In this new lineup of summer potions, Sun-In is still the nostalgic classic.

Around the world, craftspeople have devoted themselves to the pursuit of perfection — like a historical enthusiast in Tunisia who painstakingly revived an extinct purple dye and a master iron forger in Japan who runs a 100-year-old workshop. The highest level of mastery is only achieved through an artisan's lifelong dedication to their craft.

They unfolded orange banners bearing the words in Italian: “Our future is as black as this water” as crowds of onlookers snapped pictures. It is believed to be the same group of climate activists that led protests at other Italian historical sites including the Barcaccia fountain at the base of the Spanish Steps in central Rome, where they poured black liquid into the fountain on April 1. CNN —Every year, the textile industry uses 1.3 trillion gallons of water to dye garments – enough to fill 2 million Olympic-sized swimming pools. Textile wastewater contains toxic chemicals from dyes that pollute the enviornment -- like wastewater released from factories into Dravyavati River, in India (pictured). Noemi Cassanelli/AFP/Getty ImagesThey targeted “anionic dyes,” because there are not many effective methods to remove these types of dye from water. He also hopes to devise solutions for cleaning more than just textile dyes from water. Nashef says that using membrane-based nanomaterials in pre-treatment could cut the energy needed to clean the water.

Former Chinese president Hu Jintao was perhaps the most boring leader in modern times. Mr. Hu replied: “China would be happy to share its technology in this area.”Why do Chinese leaders dye their hair?
