Researchers have now used DNA analysis to uncover just how long ants have been farming fungi, now described in a study published Thursday in the journal Science. To trace the evolution of this relationship between ants and fungi, Schultz and his colleagues built complex family trees. Using the DNA from 475 species of fungi, including 288 species known to be cultivated by ants, the researchers pieced together how all these organisms are related. The study team did the same thing for 276 species of ants, including 208 species of fungus farmers. Ants began farming fungi 66 million years ago after an asteroid hit Earth, according to a new study.

CNN —Botanists have grown a long-lost tree species from a 1,000-year-old seed found in a cave in the Judean Desert in the 1980s. But the scientists conducting the new research weren’t able to identify the type of tree from the seed alone. However, the sample didn’t match any of the known Commiphora species in her database. The tree, which the study authors believe may have a biblical connection, is seen at 12 years old. Tokyo CNN —A pair of blood-spattered trousers in a miso tank and an allegedly forced confession helped send Iwao Hakamata to death row more than five decades ago. Now, the world’s longest-serving death row convict has a chance to clear his name. During the retrial, Hakamata’s lawyers argued new information proved his innocence, while prosecutors claimed there was enough evidence to confirm he should be hanged for the crime. And some say it’s one of the reasons why the country should do away with the death penalty. “I’m against the death penalty,” Hideko said.

A decade after the dairy discovery on strikingly intact remains mummified by the Taklamakan Desert’s arid conditions, scientists have extracted and sequenced DNA from the 3,600-year-old cheese, the oldest in the archaeological record. Fu is director of the ancient DNA laboratory at the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology in Beijing. The researchers recovered animal and microbe DNA from the kefir cheese discovered on the Tarim Basin mummies. Fu and her colleagues also sequenced the bacterial genes in the ancient kefir cheese, revealing insights into how probiotic bacteria evolved over the past 3,600 years. “Ancient DNA analysis, especially on microbes, is fraught with technical problems, mostly stemming from contamination by modern bacteria,” he added.

A boy kidnapped more than seven decades ago from a California park was found alive and well as a senior citizen, reunited with surviving loved ones after his niece found him across the country through her own DNA research, police said Monday. His genetic material was a match to two surviving siblings in California, proving Albino was the boy taken in 1951, police said. The Oakland Police Department statement didn't make clear who officers believed took Albino from that park seven decades ago, nor did it identify who raised him. Albino's 92-year-old mother died in 2005 never knowing the fate of her kidnapped son, the Bay Area News Group reported. “I think he died happily,” said 63-year-old Alida Alequin, the niece who alerted police to her 22% DNA match to Albino.

Missouri is set Tuesday to execute Marcellus Williams, a death row inmate whose case has spurred several efforts to save his life amid doubts about the evidence presented at his 2001 murder trial and the actions of a trial lawyer in the case. The attorneys are asking for the court to either find that those actions violated Williams’ rights or have a lower court address those issues. A St. Louis County circuit judge and Gayle’s family also agreed to the deal, but state Attorney General Andrew Bailey, a Republican, opposed it, and the state Supreme Court agreed. A judge ultimately rejected the motion to vacate, a ruling Williams’ attorneys appealed to the state Supreme Court in the hearing Monday. In addition to the state Supreme Court appeal, Williams’ attorneys also have an appeal before the U.S. Supreme Court and a clemency request before Missouri Gov.
