This week's dispatchWin McNamee/Getty Images; iStock; Rebecca Zisser/BIPressure on Biden buildsUS President Joe Biden had a terrible debate. He's done little to turn things around since and appears to be in denial over the damage done to his campaign. AdvertisementThat's the story of a critical 10-day period in the US presidential race, which kicked off with Biden's historically bad debate performance. Biden's poor performance led to a Democrat freak out and growing calls for Biden to step aside. Neither sentiment is likely to satisfy the many Democrats who have serious concerns about Biden's mental acuity and electability.

CNN —ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos had a tall task on Friday: Press President Joe Biden on his age, his acuity and the future of his reelection campaign. Stephanopoulos mostly lived up to the challenge, asking rapid-fire, biting questions that did not let Biden off the hook. Behind his questions, viewers got a sense of Stephanopoulos’ frustration, which is shared by the entire White House press corps. In the interview, Biden’s first since the CNN debate last month, Stephanopoulos kept the questions going at a fast clip. Although the interview did not necessarily have any earth-shattering moments, it was important for the Biden campaign to try to halt the negative whirlpool around it.

Read previewFor most of President Joe Biden's White House tenure, Republicans have floated theories about the president's health and cast doubt on the veteran Democrat's leadership. Biden sought to use the debate to gain some momentum in a race that for weeks showed him tied with Trump in national polls. In the weeks leading up the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, this is not where the Biden campaign thought it'd be. But the former president is not in the clear in the eyes of the public, despite this week's Supreme Court ruling. Should Biden step aside, a more popular Democrat — backed by a party itching to defeat Trump again — could easily dispatch the former president in November.
