☆ Australia's Treasury Wine looks to rebuild China business after tariff review

Oct 23 (Reuters) - Australia's Treasury Wine Estates (TWE.AX) said on Monday it is well placed to rebuild its business in China, should tariffs by China of the country's wine be removed, as signalled by the Australian government on Sunday. The Australian government, which is currently rebuilding its economic ties with Asia's largest economy, had said that an expedited review of tariffs on Australian wine into China will commence and is expected to take up to five months. "Should tariffs be removed, these measures will be implemented sustainably and with the aim of growing the business in China," the company said in a statement. Some of the measures for Treasury Wine to build its China business include a re-allocation of a portion of Penfolds Luxury from other global markets back to China and to re-build its distribution for the Penfolds Australian entry-level luxury portfolios. The world's biggest standalone winemaker used to derive a third of its profits from China, before anti-dumping and subsidy tariffs of up to 212% were imposed on Australian wine in late 2020.

Oct 23 (Reuters) - Israeli aircraft struck two Hezbollah cells in Lebanon early on Monday, which were planning to launch anti-tank missiles and rockets toward Israel, its military said, as fighting flared across the two countries' shared border. Lebanon's state-run news agency NNA reported an Israeli air strike on the southern outskirts of Aitaroun, in southern Lebanon. Israel later said it struck more Hezbollah targets, including a compound and an observation post. Iran-backed Hezbollah and Israel have been trading fire at the frontier with increasing frequency since Palestinian group Hamas carried out a shock attack on Israel on Oct. 7 and Israel responded with intense air strikes on Gaza. At least five Israeli soldiers and one civilian have been killed on Israel's side of the frontier, according to Israeli military reports.

The General Staff of Ukraine's Armed Forces, in its evening report, said Ukrainian forces repelled nearly 20 Russian attacks around Avdiivka, its buildings now largely reduced to shells. Russian military accounts made no mention of Avdiivka, but described successful operations against Ukrainian positions to the east in Bakhmut, seized by Moscow in May after months of fighting. Russian forces routinely shell Kherson and villages on the western bank of the Dnipro from positions on the eastern bank, where they retreated late last year. The U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War has reported in the past week that Ukrainian forces have crossed the Dnipro to take up new positions of their own and pursue Russian forces.

Harvard Management Co said on Thursday that it earned a 2.9% return in the fiscal year that ended June 30, leaving the total endowment at $50.7 billion. A year earlier it lost 1.8% amid tumbling markets but the endowment ended at $50.9 billion. Returns from these schools are watched closely because they pioneered putting money into hedge and private equity funds. Rival Yale University returned 1.8% while the University of Pennsylvania returned 1.3%.

The interim authorities said that Bazoum and his family, with the help of accomplices in the security forces, planned to drive a vehicle to the ouskirts of the capital Niamey and catch a helicopter to neighbouring Nigeria. "The strong reaction of the defense and security forces made it possible to foil this plan to destabilize our country," a military spokesman said on national television. Reuters was not able to confirm the account or reach Bazoum, whose whereabouts are unknown. Bazoum's party and family members say he has had no access to running water, electricity or fresh goods, prompting condemnation from former western allies.
