A judge in Kentucky has dismissed core charges against two former Louisville police officials involved in the raid that ended in Breonna Taylor's death. Judge Charles R. Officials in North Carolina are searching for an inmate convicted of killing a 1-year-old girl after he escaped while being taken to a medical facility Tuesday in Hillsborough, North Carolina. Alston was convicted of first-degree murder in 2018 and sentenced to life behind bars, according to the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction. The department said in a statement that Alston arrived about 7 a.m. Tuesday in a prison transport van to the University of North Carolina Medical Center's gastroenterology unit, where he had a medical appointment. Keith Acree, communications director for the Department of Adult Correction, told NBC affiliate WRAL of Raleigh that Alston was wearing a waist chain and handcuffs when he fled. Summer 2024 could be remembered not just for its historic temperatures, but for its successive heat waves with unusual geographic reach. More than 36 million Americans were under advisories, watches or warnings for dangerous and excessive heat Saturday night, according to National Weather Service data. The Gulf Coast and the South were also in for triple-digit highs for much of the week, the weather service said. "The prolonged nature of the heat will increase the risk of heat-related illness," it said in warning that much of the West would experience dangerous heat next week. "The combination of high temperatures increasing into the lower 100s along with high humidity will result in major to extreme" risk for heat-related illness, the weather service said.

Since Friday, the front developed from a potential tropical cyclone to a tropical depression, and it continues to draw strength from warm, tropical water. Tropical Storm Debby was expected to continue moving north at 15mph and hug Florida's west coast. The outer portions of a tropical system, which later became Tropical Storm Debby, saturates Fort Myers Beach, Fla., on Saturday. The named tropical storm designation means the front has sustained winds of 39 to 73 mph. Debby comes with a hurricane warning and tropical storm warning for the state's west coast from the Suwannee River to the Ochlockonee River, the hurricane center said.
