CNN —Visitors to Copenhagen who engage in environmentally-friendly activities such as litter picking or traveling on public transport could be rewarded with free food, cultural experiences and tours as part of a new pilot program. The CopenPay trial scheme, which runs between July 15 and August 11, involves “transforming green actions into currency for cultural experiences,” the Danish capital’s tourism authority Visit Copenhagen, also known as Wonderful Copenhagen, said in a statement Monday. This includes complimentary guided museum tours, free kayak rentals, and even a free vegetarian lunch made from local crops,” the Wonderful Copenhagen statement added. The Danish capital is popular with visitors for its pretty architecture, world-class food and a safe, clean, green environment. “With CopenPay, we’re empowering people to experience more of what Copenhagen offers while placing less burden on our planet,” said Mikkel Aarø Hansen, CEO of Wonderful Copenhagen, in a statement.

I'm an American living in Denmark, and for the first time I am having to play by the cultural and legal rules of Danish summer vacation. When your child starts attending public school, schools close down during the summer period. In Denmark, enjoying a long summer vacation isn't just a perk — it's a right under the Danish Holiday Act, called Ferieloven. The Holiday Act says that employees should ideally inform their employers about their leave plans three months in advance for the main holiday period. AdvertisementNow that I'm a working parent in Denmark, I'm very grateful for getting to experience a new way of spending the summer holidays together with family.

A looming ban on vacation rentals in Barcelona. At a time when overwhelmed European destinations are slapping tourists with restrictions and fees, Copenhagen is trying a different approach: rewarding visitors who act responsibly. Beginning July 15, tourists who demonstrate climate-friendly travel behavior by participating in the city’s green initiatives — including cycling, train travel and clean-up efforts — will be granted access to museum tours, kayak rentals, free meals and more. “We must turn tourism from being an environmental burden into a force for positive change,” said Mikkel Aarø-Hansen, the chief executive of Wonderful Copenhagen, the tourism organization for the Capital Region of Denmark. Copenhagen’s new initiative, CopenPay, aims to bridge the gap between the desire to act sustainably and actual behavior by making climate-friendly action a currency for cultural experiences.

A European rival to HIMARS takes shape
  + stars: | 2024-07-07 | by ( Michael Peck | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +6 min
Europe is building a multiple rocket launcher that resembles America's HIMARS, the ground-fired weapon that took on the precision strike missions that Ukraine's battered air force couldn't. Many, such as France's LRU and Germany's MARS 2, are based on the U.S. M270, a tracked mobile rocket launcher, and its Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System rockets. One HIMARS launcher can carry six GMLRS rockets or one longer-range ATACMS ballistic missile. HIMARS rockets destroyed Russian ammunition depots and headquarters, disrupting logistics and command and control, and spurring Russian forces to move vital facilities deeper behind their lines. Collectively, such trends are prompting some militaries to consider possible alternatives to the US HIMARS system, though certainly that remains a major player in this competition for contracts."

If not left to die of dehydration or illness, migrants on the dangerous land routes through northern Africa toward the Mediterranean and Europe risk rape, torture, sex trafficking and even organ theft, according to a new report produced in part by the United Nations. Based on interviews with more than 31,000 migrants all along their routes, from 2020 to 2023, the report documents the brutality suffered by the growing number of people from dozens of countries who try to make their way across the Sahel and the Sahara, fleeing war, environmental degradation and poverty. Physical violence apart from sexual violence, which the report counted separately, was the risk most often identified by migrants. Dangers along the routes include arbitrary detention — often to extort money from their families — and trafficking for labor, sex or criminal activity. The migrants told of torture and even organ harvesting.

Spain thought they had beaten Germany after Dani Olmo’s 51st-minute finish to a fine team move. Having beaten the hosts in dramatic fashion, some will now consider Spain the favourites to win Euro 2024. Spain had never previously beaten a host nation in a knockout tie at either a World Cup or European Championship. What Germany had to remember was that De la Fuente’s Spain are far more versatile in the way they play. His final game in professional football was mixed.

But it is slightly unusual for people to talk as much about the ball as they have about the Adidas Fussballliebe Pro EURO 2024 match ball, to give it its full name, as they have in Germany of late. “I’ve not heard any goalkeeper complain about the ball, other than saying it’s a really, really quick ball, which is something you just deal with,” said the former Denmark and Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, whose son Kasper is the current Danish No 1. “Normally, when you have a new ball, the opinions are divided but (goalkeepers) don’t think it’s a bad ball. CNN —A man has been arrested after he climbed onto the roof of the BVB Stadion in Dortmund during Germany’s last-16 match against Denmark at Euro 2024, police said. Social media clips show a man climbing in the rafters of the stadium dressed in black with his face covered. He was arrested at 11:44 p.m. local time, police said, after complying with police requests and was found with camera equipment in his bag. UEFA – European football’s governing body – said stadium safety and security was the “ultimate priority” for them, the German football association and tournament organizers. “UEFA would like to commend the police, stadium and local authorities for their co-operation in the incident last night in Dortmund involving an individual arrested by the police on the stadium roof,” UEFA told CNN in a statement.

This was, for the most part, a dismal England performance, regardless of the supernatural deliverance at the end. Everything that was bad about today in Gelsenkirchen had been signposted by England over the course of the last few weeks. The red flags had all been there since England opened their campaign in this same city two weeks ago. And yes, England are desperately flawed, still unbalanced, still uncertain on the ball, still struggling to create chances even when they dominate possession. None of the lingering questions over this England team have been solved.

If Austria wanted to have any chance of qualifying to the round of 16 they had to beat Poland in their second group game. The wide areas were where Ukraine focused their attacks, and Oleksandr Zinchenko’s square pass to Mykola Shaparenko made it 1-1 in the second half. Lightning stops playAfter several days of hot weather, the skies above Dortmund’s Signal Iduna Park had been gathering throughout the evening. Thunder and lightning could be heard from afar, with the rain arriving after 32 minutes of Germany’s last-16 game against Denmark. CNN —The Euro 2024 round of 16 clash between Denmark and host nation Germany was suspended after just over 30 minutes played due to what UEFA described as “adverse weather conditions” at the BVB Stadion in Dortmund. The players, staff and officials spent a few minutes taking shelter in the dugout before being led down the tunnel as lightning illuminated the sky in West Germany. Unfortunately, that word — the key word in all of this — is not one that can be used here. Or, if you are Gary Lineker, you might use the word on a podcast to describe an England performance at the European Championship. Reduced to its core elements, then, it might be hard — particularly to outsiders — to understand why the word has caused such consternation. Lineker, a respected former player and a judicious pundit, suggested that England had played poorly. Gareth Southgate, the England coach, spoke after the very same game of needing to “hit the reset button.” The players have admitted that they have not performed well thus far.
