Inside the White House, senior administration officials are bracing for Republicans to call for Biden to resign the presidency if he doesn’t seek reelection. With Biden’s political future on the brink, the White House is fielding a steady stream of letters, telephone calls and message from Americans, too, from Democratic voters like Terri and John Hale.

In these days of uncertainty at the White House, Vice President Kamala Harris is sticking close to President Biden physically and politically, determined not to let anyone say that she has been anything other than completely loyal. With Mr. Biden’s future on the line, perhaps no one is in a more delicate position than Ms. Harris. As a practical matter, though, she has to ignore the chatter and disclaim any interest unless Mr. Biden reverses course and passes her the baton. Washington CNN —After President Joe Biden’s reelection efforts spiraled into chaos following his debate fiasco last month, Democrats who have both stood by and abandoned Biden since then see Tuesday as a decisive day for the president’s political future. Jeffries listened as he was confronted with concerns and frustrations from all factions of the caucus during House Democrats’ Tuesday meeting. But instead of a united front, Democrats emerged from the meeting without consensus or a clear path forward. Even though a number of lawmakers expressed their support for Biden, the concerns stuck with many Democrats after the meeting. House Democrats gathered on Tuesday to discuss steps forward with Biden’s campaign.

But recent history raises deep questions about whether Democratic Senate candidates can continue to levitate as far above the presidential ticket as polls now show. “A Democratic Senate majority coalition relies on having both Senators from a state such as Michigan,” said Daniel Hopkins, a University of Pennsylvania political scientist. As recently as the 1980s, it was common for voters to split their tickets in Senate races. Still, even that alignment left room for some Senate candidates to swim against this general tide. This history, by itself, doesn’t answer whether Democratic Senate candidates would have better prospects with or without Biden as their presidential nominee.

Vice President Kamala Harris looks on during a campaign event at Girard College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on May 29. Biden always says not to compare him to the almighty, but to the alternative. That’s her keeping close to Biden — but it’s also Biden keeping her close. Despite her efforts, Democratic politics has started to reshape around her — as has former President Donald Trump’s campaign, which has already begun attacking Harris. Other officials and advisers said plans are underway to convince Biden to immediately throw his support behind Harris, release his Democratic delegates and ask them to follow his choice.

CNN —Amid the ongoing fallout from Joe Biden’s debate performance, talk in many top Democratic circles has already moved to who Kamala Harris’ running mate would be. A more open race, these top Democrats hope, would be for Harris’ running mate, with a focus on leading Democratic governors. “President Biden is our nominee, Vice President Harris is our running mate, and we will win this November,” he said. The anti-Trump coalition cannot afford to discount the strengths of the nominated Democratic running mate and current vice president. Harris’ answer: She’d turn around and say to him, “Why are you being so weird?”As vice president, Harris has tended to be known more for her word salads than sharp elbows like that.

Maura Healey issued a statement Friday urging President Joe Biden to “carefully evaluate” whether he remains the Democratic Party’s best hope to defeat Donald Trump in the 2024 election. “President Biden saved our democracy in 2020 and has done an outstanding job over the last four years. Over the coming days, I urge him to listen to the American people and carefully evaluate whether he remains our best hope to defeat Donald Trump. To the Editor:Re “Biden Reassures Governors of Fitness, but Concedes His Schedule Is Draining” (news article, July 5):I am gobsmacked. President Biden told the Democratic governors that “he needs to get more sleep and work fewer hours, including curtailing events after 8 p.m.” Is that supposed to ease our minds? Does he not understand the demands of the presidency after serving three and a half years in office? Does he really expect the American public to just accept that at certain times of the day — crises be damned — the president needs a nap? Why won’t Mr. Biden do the right thing and withdraw his candidacy, and why won’t the Democratic leadership demand that?

I’m not leaving,” Biden declared to spooked campaign staff on a phone call on Wednesday as he searched for an elusive comeback. And even a far more competent damage control effort than the White House and the Biden campaign have mounted so far would have struggled to erase that impression. On Wednesday for instance, the White House picked up Biden’s line that he was jet lagged after two trips to Europe in early June. And Biden had the Democratic governors to the White House. The White House and the campaign said the reports were false.

CNN —President Joe Biden was examined by his physician in the days following last week’s CNN presidential debate, the White House tells CNN — despite the White House press secretary having said Wednesday that the president has had no medical exams since his February physical. “Several days later, the president was seen to check on his cold and was recovering well,” White House spokesman Andrew Bates said. Questions about Biden’s fitness for office and ability to seek a second term have swirled since his stunningly halting debate performance at last week’s CNN presidential debate. The White House and campaign have insisted the president is not considering ending his campaign.
