The case returns to Judge Tanya Chutkan one month after the Supreme Court issued a game-changing ruling on presidential power. But the Supreme Court interceded earlier this year and put the case on pause to consider Trump’s claims of presidential immunity. Attorneys working on the case believe that Chutkan will move quickly with the case back in her jurisdiction, according to sources familiar with their thinking. Any move she makes will be under extreme scrutiny, given that it’s the only remining federal case against Trump after the Florida federal judge overseeing his classified documents case, Aileen Cannon, dismissed those criminal charges against Trump and his two co-defendants. Cannon appeared to hold hearings on nearly every motion in the Trump case before her, but Chutkan often rules without hearing from the parties in person.

CNN —Alleged Sinaloa cartel cofounder Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada appeared Thursday in federal court in Texas for his latest hearing since his arrest a week ago in an intrigue-packed case centered on one of the world’s most powerful and deadly drug trafficking organizations. He was arrested the prior day in El Paso alongside Joaquín Guzmán López, the 38-year-old son of infamous cartel boss and founder Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman. The scene outside the courthouse in El Paso showed a heavy security presence, with federal agents and bomb-sniffing dogs patrolling the perimeter. Attorney Jeffrey Lichtman’s assertion raised new questions about why Guzmán López flew to Texas if he had no cooperation agreement with American authorities. “Joaquín Guzmán López forcibly kidnapped my client,” attorney Frank Pérez said in a statement.

Anadolu | Anadolu | Getty ImagesShops and public transport across Venezuela shut down on Wednesday as tensions over a fiercely disputed presidential election and rumors of more opposition arrests and sporadic violence kept many people home. Socialist President Nicolas Maduro, who has ruled since 2013, was proclaimed the winner of the Sunday vote by the electoral council. Meanwhile, international pressure on the government has mounted to release full results, including from regional heavyweights the United States and Brazil. At a session of the Washington-based Organization of American States, Brian Nichols, a senior U.S. diplomat for Latin America, said the reason Venezuela's electoral authority has failed to release full vote tallies is "obvious." Either officials do not want to confirm Gonzalez's lopsided triumph, or they need more time to falsify results, he argued.

The Justice Department has denied a request by Zacarias Moussaoui, the only prisoner ever convicted in the United States of having ties to the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, to serve the remainder of his life sentence in his native France. Mr. Moussaoui had made the application from the supermax prison in Colorado, using a process that is routinely available to foreign nationals held as U.S. prisoners. Then on Wednesday afternoon, two relatives of people killed in the attacks said they were notified by the Justice Department that the request was denied. “Our office appreciates your concerns and comments regarding Zacarias Moussaoui,” the email said. “I am notifying you that Mr. Moussaoui’s application to transfer to France was denied by the United States on July 26, 2024.”No explanation was offered for the delay in notification.

But addressing 14 risk factors over the course of one’s life — starting in childhood — could prevent or delay nearly half of cases, according to a large report by 27 dementia experts. “The progress in preventing and treating dementia is accelerating.”The initial 12 risk factors were linked with 40% of cases, but the new report suggests addressing the 14 risk factors could help eliminate or delay 45% of dementia cases, said Livingston, a professor of psychiatry of older people at University College London. This “critical” update calls attention to two risk factors that preventive neurologist Dr. Richard Issacson says his clinical practice has been evaluating for over a decade. Influencing brain functionThe report doesn’t establish with certainly that these risk factors directly cause dementia, experts said. But other research has provided theories on the link between these vulnerabilities and dementia risk.

This early-established ovarian reserve can affect a person’s ability to become pregnant throughout their reproductive years. As a woman ages, her ovarian reserve diminishes until she has only a limited number of good-quality follicles remaining. The average age of menopause is 51 years – though this can vary broadly between women depending on their ovarian reserve. The ovarian reserve was monitored by transvaginal ultrasound and several blood tests to detect various ovarian hormones. But if the clinical trial shows rapamycin is beneficial, this could help women with low ovarian reserve and those hoping to prolong their fertility.

Washington, D.C., Attorney General Brian Schwalb sued the online ticket exchange platform StubHub on Wednesday, alleging deceptive and unfair pricing. The lawsuit claims StubHub uses deceptive advertising of low ticket prices to lure consumers who pay vastly more after an arduous checkout process. "This is no accident — StubHub intentionally hides the true price to boost profits at its customers' expense," Schwalb said in a statement. In its lawsuit, the attorney general's office said that from 2014 to 2015, StubHub used "all-in pricing," in which the advertised price included mandatory fees. The complaint alleged that StubHub did a testing period where it randomly assigned consumers to one of the two models.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump’s remarks to the annual Bitcoin conference on Saturday were delayed for about an hour after two individuals were removed from the premises for “not following proper entry protocols,” the United States Secret Service said. The two individuals were credentialed, the Secret Service said, adding that there was no “protective interest with these individuals.”The agency determined there was “never a threat to the former president,” a Secret Service spokesperson told CNN. The former president ultimately took the stage alone and no indication of a potential security issue was relayed to the crowd. The actions of the Secret Service that day led to bipartisan condemnation of the agency and the resignation of USSS Director Kimberly Cheatle. Acting Secret Service Director Ronald Rowe is set to appear before a Senate panel on Tuesday to discuss how the agency will approve security measures in the wake of the assassination attempt.

Washington CNN —Secret Service acting Director Ronald Rowe provided new details about the assassination attempt of Donald Trump on Tuesday, delivering forceful testimony at a Senate hearing about the agency’s failures earlier this month in Butler, Pennsylvania. But at the joint hearing of the Judiciary and Homeland Security committees, Rowe also highlighted the missteps of local law enforcement on July 13, when the former president was shot. Moving forward, Rowe told the committees, his agency will avoid assuming local law enforcement agencies are fully capable of fulfilling their role in protecting an event. Rowe told the lawmakers that local law enforcement was positioned in a nearby building and should have had a clear line of sight of Crooks on the roof. Tobra claimed that the account in question was “pro-Biden.”The Gab account has also not been conclusively connected to Crooks.

In 2017, a stronger vaccine, Shingrix, became available. “While research into whether vaccines affect dementia risk continues, people should be aware that there are other factors that have definitively been linked to an increased dementia risk. This study also found that the new shingles vaccine was associated with a larger degree of benefit than the older one. Although the findings are intriguing, the association needs more study before researchers can know for sure that the shingles vaccine is definitively behind the benefit. Instead, a series of negotiations led to an eventual compromise decision limiting the Idaho law and temporarily forestalling further limits on abortion access from the high court. This exclusive series on the Supreme Court is based on CNN sources inside and outside the court with knowledge of the deliberations. The Idaho law had exemptions only to prevent death of the pregnant woman and in instances of rape or incest. It issued formal guidance saying the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA), which requires stabilizing treatment regardless of a patient’s ability to pay, would preempt any state abortion ban in situations when an emergency termination was needed. Idaho lost in an initial proceeding in a US district court, as a judge issued a temporary injunction against the abortion ban.
