Gavin Newsom doesn't want to admit that he's running for president. Fetterman talked about Newsom during an Iowa Democratic Party dinner on Saturday, per NBC News. Gavin Newsom of California doesn't have "the guts" to admit that he's running a shadow campaign for the 2024 Democratic presidential nomination. "There are two additional Democrats running for Pennsylvania, excuse me, running for president right now," Fetterman said at an Iowa Democratic Party dinner on Saturday, per NBC News. "You may be termed out here, but does cleaning up the streets of California factor into a potential presidential run?"

Gail Collins: Bret, I know you’re busy writing about your reporting trip to Israel, and I am looking forward to reading all your thoughts. (I guess that’s another definition for the term “manspreading.”) On the economy, voters prefer Trump over Biden by a 22-point margin. CNN —Former President Donald Trump holds an edge over President Joe Biden in a series of hypothetical matchups among registered voters in four key swing states, new polling from The New York Times and Siena College shows. In Nevada, a state Biden narrowly carried in the 2020 presidential election, Trump boasts 52% support to Biden’s 41%. Trump also tops Biden in Georgia, a state that was central to his ploy to overturn the last presidential election, with 49% to Biden’s 43%. President Biden now wants Congress to help allies win two wars abroad, and deter a third over Taiwan, yet he wants to continue spending on everything as if nothing in the world has changed. [1/2] U.S. President Joe Biden holds an event about American retirement economics in the State Dining Room at the White House in Washington, U.S., October 31, 2023. Thirteen top administration officials will visit rural places in 15 states, including election battlegrounds like Michigan, Pennsylvania and Arizona, to highlight investments in rural communities, where one in five Americans live. A campaign official told Reuters that Biden would also participate in a fundraiser in Minneapolis after the farm visit. Biden beat former president Donald Trump in Minnesota by 52.4% to 45.3%, winning the state's 10 electoral college votes out of a total of 538 total. "President Biden believes that investing in America means investing in all of America and leaving no one behind," Neera Tanden, who heads the White House Domestic Policy Council, told reporters.

The White House on Wednesday will announce more than $5 billion in funding for agriculture, broadband and clean energy needs in sparsely populated parts of the country as President Biden travels to Minnesota to kick off an administration-wide tour of rural communities. But the president and his aides are well aware that his hopes for a second term are likely to be determined closer to home. Rural voters like the ones he will address at a corn, soybean and hog farm south of Minneapolis are increasingly voting Republican. A recent poll showed that most voters had heard little or nothing about a health care and clean energy law that is the cornerstone of Mr. Biden’s economic agenda. And the president even faces a challenge within his own party, from Representative Dean Phillips of Minnesota, who announced his long-shot presidential bid last week.

Nikki Haley Surges Into Second Place in Iowa Poll

Nikki Haley is surging in support among Iowa Republicans and is now tied for second place in the battle for the GOP nomination in the Hawkeye State, according to a poll released Monday morning. Haley has the first-choice backing of 16% of Iowa Republicans – the same as Florida Gov. The poll was conducted before Trump's vice president, Mike Pence, dropped out of the race on Saturday, saying "this is not my time." Even before the realignment, Pence was struggling, having dropped from 6% support in August to 2% in the current poll. The Iowa poll reflects a new political reality for the 2024 elections, with the nominations for both major political parties appearing to be sewn up with two and a half months to go before the first nominating contest.

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — A presidential primary filing period marked by lights, cameras and (in)action has come to a close at the New Hampshire secretary of state's office. While Biden will rely on a write-in campaign, the Democratic ballot hardly will be blank. There will be 21 names on the Democratic ballot and 24 on the GOP ballot. The simplest path to get on the New Hampshire presidential primary ballot is to submit a Declaration of Candidacy and pay a $1,000 filing fee. In 2024, New Hampshire will defy a new Democratic calendar that has South Carolina leading off presidential primary voting on Feb. 3 and Nevada going three days later.

Democratic presidential candidate U.S. Representative Dean Phillips (D-Minn.) speaks after filing the paperwork to put his name on the ballot in Concord, N.H. on Friday. Photo: reba saldanha/ReutersPresident Biden is only weeks shy of turning 81 years old, most of the public thinks he shouldn’t run for a second term, and the polls suggest he might lose next year to Donald Trump. Yet Mr. Biden has been running for the Democratic nomination all but unopposed—at least until Friday. That’s when Dean Phillips filed paperwork in New Hampshire to challenge Mr. Biden, and give the 54-year-old Minnesota Congressman credit for daring to tell Democratic voters the hard political truth that bigger party names duck.

CNN —President Joe Biden is just as low in the White House’s internal polls as in any of the public ones. But while Biden advisers are dismissive of Rep. Dean Phillips’ primary challenge launched this week, they are also annoyed about it. Still, they remain confident that Biden is Democrats’ best option in 2024. Boyle told CNN this week that between the war in Israel and Gaza and the chaos of House Republicans electing their new speaker, he had not had “one conversation with anyone” about Phillips. Asked if he was worried about Phillips being a factor even back home in their state’s primary, Walz laughed.
