The cult of Emily Oster

Emily Oster is sitting in the back of a car, checking her Garmin watch as we lurch through rush-hour traffic toward the Holland Tunnel. A self-described expert in data, Oster uses her economics training to dig into studies on things like circumcision and screen time and translate them for popular consumption. There doesn't seem to be much of a gap between the way Oster presents herself in her books and newsletters and the way she conducts her life. Unsurprisingly, economics informs every aspect of the way Oster sees the world. When Oster was a toddler, her mother told a Yale colleague that Oster often talked to herself before falling asleep.

Oracle cofounder Larry Ellison is a fellow billionaire and longtime friend of Musk. Even Elon Musk's close friend and financial backer Larry Ellison isn't safe from the Twitter owner's refusal to pay various bills and expenses. Oracle, the company Ellison cofounded and where he remains chairman and CTO, is the latest Twitter vendor to go months without being paid for services rendered, according to two people familiar with the company. Stiffing Oracle is more of a surprise given Musk's close personal and financial relationship with Ellison. Ellison was subpoenaed as part of Twitter's lawsuit to force Musk into acquiring the company for the agreed upon price.

Tiny Japanese trucks that cost as little as $5,000 are winning over some Americans. It's not just tiny homes taking America by storm – now tiny trucks made in Japan are becoming increasingly popular too. The tiny trucks are a common sight on Japanese roads, but they've also won over some Americans wanting a versatile, compact – and cheap – vehicle. The cheapest Kei truck sold by Japan Car Direct is about $5,000, with shipping costs accounting for much of that sum. Japan Car Direct and its competitors will walk customers through the import process, which requires several forms to be completed.

Meta last May opened its first retail store within its Burlingame office campus. Meta's nascent strategy to launch its own retail stores is already being undone, according to people familiar with the situation. As part of the company's metaverse strategy, the Meta Store serves mainly as a showroom for its Quest headset, where people can test out the hardware and purchase it. It was thought upon its opening to be the beginning of Meta's retail ambitions. It has also discontinued the sale of its Portal video chat device, previously part of its retail store, and will not be releasing a planned watch product.

When Elon Musk took over Twitter, he said getting rid of spam bots was a priority. As part of this war on bots, Musk says you'll soon have to pay to DM accounts who don't follow you. Last year, Elon Musk promised "to defeat the spam bots or die trying." The Wall Street Journal reported this week that the level of bot activity on Twitter is about the same as before Musk took over. "As I've said many times, it is increasingly difficult to distinguish between AI bots," Musk added.

Twitter users are engaging with original tweets from Elon Musk less and less. "Elon Musk's tweets attracted more engagement after his stake in Twitter started to increase," Huge said in its analysis. "There is a significant difference in engagement for Elon Musk's original tweets after the acquisition, compared to before the acquisition." That high level of engagement in Spring 2022 quickly fell, however, the Huge data shows, to roughly 5 million engagements per week. While there have been some brief spikes in engagement with Musk's tweets so far this year, overall there has been a decline.
