It comes as Syria's powerful allies, Iran and Russia, are distracted with other conflicts. With Russia and Iran distracted by regional conflicts, a stagnant 13-year-long civil war in Syria has exploded into renewed violence. It's the most intense outbreak of fighting in the war since Syrian government forces, backed by Iran and Russia, drove rebels back to their strongholds in the north eight years ago, and a stalemate developed. "Israel has changed the balance of power in the region by going on this all-out war on the axis of resistance." Meanwhile, Russia, whose 2015 entry into the Syrian Civil War was crucial in propping up the Assad regime, has problems of its own.

CNN —A highly decorated former Israeli defense minister has caused a firestorm by accusing Israel of carrying out ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in northern Gaza. The interviewer expressed surprise at Ya’alon’s use of the phrase “ethnic cleansing,” asking, “Is that what you think – that we’re on the way there?”“Why ‘on the way?’” he responded. The Israeli military has for two months been carrying out an intense and deadly operation in northern Gaza, targeting what it says are resurgent Hamas militants. Vanishingly few aid deliveries have been allowed into northern Gaza, according to the World Food Programme. “Under this title, ethnic cleansing is effectively being carried out; I don’t have another word for it.”The interviewer said that such a phrase evoked “dark periods” in history.

Opinion | The Hunter Biden Pardon: Mercy, or the Wrong Message?

To the Editor:Re “Biden Issues a ‘Full and Unconditional Pardon’ of His Son Hunter Biden” (nytimes.com, Dec. 1):President Biden’s pardon of his son Hunter was, in a word, just. While the jury’s verdict was a fair one, based on the overwhelming evidence of Hunter Biden’s illegal possession of a firearm, the decision to overcharge this victimless crime was, in a word, political. The overcharging of Hunter Biden was most certainly influenced by a perceived need within the Justice Department to bend over backward to demonstrate its “impartiality.” All prosecutorial decisions are discretionary: If Hunter’s surname were not Biden, the charges and sentencing recommendations would have fit the crime. It would be inhumane to have expected 82-year-old Joe Biden to have left his only surviving son in the safekeeping of the Trump administration penal system — and subjected, potentially, to other trumped-up charges under the soon-to-be gutted and weaponized Justice Department. The president’s pardon of his son was merciful and fully justified, given the totality of the circumstances.

London CNN —Toomaj Salehi, an Iranian dissident rapper and activist, has been released from prison, according to a statement issued Monday by his international legal team. Salehi, 32, had been held in the Dastgerd prison in the city of Isfahan for 753 days in total, according to his team. When he was briefly released from prison last year, Salehi posted a video to social media describing how he was tortured and held in solitary confinement. “Toomaj should never have been in prison at all.”Though Salehi’s case was processed in Iranian courts, his family had the support of international lawyers. “This is a time of celebration: Our brave, brilliant client Toomaj Salehi is finally free,” Caoilfhionn Gallagher, a lawyer with the Doughty Street Chambers who is the international counsel for the Salehi family, said in a statement.

Evidence from the investigation did not support the pursuit of hate crime charges, police said in the release. But the alleged victim and his mother are hopeful that will change, their attorney told CNN. Although the news release doesn’t identify the victim, 16-year-old Jayden Tkaczyk told CNN affiliate WCVB he was stomped on, punched in the face and called homophobic slurs during the incident. Gavin Newsom's special legislative session to safeguard California from potential "federal overreach" from the incoming Trump administration begins Monday, teeing up a potential battle between the president-elect and the most-populous U.S. state. The fund would be for the California Department of Justice and other state agencies to be used for court challenges and administrative actions. "President Trump received the most votes for a Republican presidential candidate in the deep blue state of California since 2004," Leavitt said. In a conversation with volunteers after the election, Newsom said the state needed to be ready for action as the next administration takes hold. "I think there's a lot of onus that's placed upon California because [of] the size, scale and scope of this state," he said at the time.

The Supreme Court will consider a law restricting transition-related health care for minors for the first time Wednesday, and legal experts say the court’s decision could affect access to transition-related care nationwide for both minors and adults for decades to come. The Supreme Court granted the Biden administration’s appeal of a 6th U.S. The court won’t consider the part of the law that bans surgery, which wasn’t covered by the lower court’s injunction. The ACLU and Lambda Legal noted in their petition to the Supreme Court that circuit courts have become split on the restrictions. Many families with trans kids have had to work around care restrictions to continue care for their children.

The Israeli authorities usually declare such killings to be in response to unspecified threats, without giving any details about the victims. Tsemel said that instead of investigating Rami’s death, the Israeli authorities appeared to be using the incident as a threat. During one incursion in September, Israeli forces shot and killed another child: 16-year-old Hani Al-Qirri. His family told CNN he was an innocent bystander, a quiet boy who enjoyed baking and lived with his grandmother after being orphaned as a young child. “They (the Israeli authorities) were there, right among us, even inside the mosque, to see what’s going on,” he said.

File photo of Fine Gael leader Simon Harris speaking at a convention in Athlone, central Ireland on March 24, 2024, after becoming de facto prime minister-in-waiting. Ireland's two long-dominant center-right parties looked likely to form a new government as results came in from a fractured national election, though with a reduced vote share and complex coalition negotiations ahead. As ballot-counting continued Sunday, incumbent governing parties Fine Gael and Fianna Fail and left-of-center opposition Sinn Fein were jostling to see which would win the most seats in the 174-seat Dail, the lower house of Ireland's parliament. Fine Gael and Fianna Fail have similar policies, but are longtime rivals with origins on opposing sides of Ireland's 1920s civil war. Fine Gael candidate Paschal Donohoe, a minister in the outgoing government, said the main theme of the election was "one of the center holding."

President Biden issued the following statement on Sunday night. Today, I signed a pardon for my son Hunter. Those who were late paying their taxes because of serious addictions, but paid them back subsequently with interest and penalties, are typically given noncriminal resolutions. It is clear that Hunter was treated differently. The charges in his cases came about only after several of my political opponents in Congress instigated them to attack me and oppose my election.

Few people tapped for any top federal post, much less a job as vital as F.B.I. director, have come with quite so much bravado, bombast or baggage as Kash Patel. On Saturday, Mr. Patel, 44, a Long Island-born provocateur and right-wing operative, was named by President-elect Donald J. Trump to lead the F.B.I., an agency he has accused of leading a “deep state” witch hunt against Mr. Trump. The announcement amounted to a de facto dismissal of the current director, Christopher A. Wray, who was appointed to the job by Mr. Trump and still has almost three years left on his 10-year term. Mr. Patel’s maximum-volume threats to exact far-reaching revenge on Mr. Trump’s behalf have endeared him to his boss and Trump allies who say the bureau needs a disrupter to weed out bias and reshape its culture.

During the 1930s, the site was a dive bar and restaurant called Bonnie’s Stonewall Inn, which shuttered in 1954. Three years later, the Genovese crime family reopened the bar, retaining the Stonewall sign and name. Gay bars were mostly mob-run back then because of laws against homosexual behavior in public. No one was talking about landmarking Stonewall then, but the city’s designation of the Village helped forestall various proposals to raze the building. Then in 2000 Stonewall was named a National Historic Landmark, and in 2015, designated a New York City Landmark.

CNN —President-elect Donald Trump said he would require countries that are part of BRICS — a China- and Russia-backed group of emerging economies — to commit to not creating new currency or face 100% tariffs during his administration. “The idea that the BRICS Countries are trying to move away from the Dollar while we stand by and watch is OVER. UK lawmakers vote to allow assisted dying
  + stars: | 2024-11-29 | by ( Rob Picheta | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +5 min
London CNN —British members of parliament have voted to legalize assisted dying, approving a contentious proposal that would make the United Kingdom one of a small handful of nations to allow terminally ill people to end their lives. The bill must still clear the House of Lords and parliamentary committees, but Friday’s vote marked the most important hurdle. Canada, New Zealand, Spain and most of Australia allow assisted dying in some form, as do several US states including Oregon, Washington and California. MPs were given a free vote on the issue, meaning they can support either side according to their conscience, with no political ramifications. Polling indicates that a comfortable majority of the public supports assisted dying.
