The holiday shopping season is upon us, and our retail stocks are well-positioned to thrive, according to Wall Street research firm Telsey Advisory Group. Telsey Advisory expects value-seeking to be a key theme among shoppers this year, which puts companies with reputations for good deals on solid ground. Overall, the firm expects holiday retail sales up between 3% to 3.5% this year, compared with 4.6% growth last year and a 5.4% increase in 2022. Costco has had a good year so far, and that should continue in the final months of 2024, Telsey Advisory argued. A major Russian bank launched a 2% mortgage rate that is available only in occupied Ukraine. The incentive is in keeping with other Russian attempts to cement its hold on occupied Ukraine. AdvertisementRussia is debuting a rock-bottom mortgage rate with a catch: it's only available if you live in a warzone. "The aim is to consolidate Russia's long-term presence — through 30-year loans, which is highly unusual in Russia — in the occupied Ukrainian regions," she told Business Insider. A growing number of wealthy Americans are making plans to leave the country in the run-up to Tuesday's election, with many fearing political and social unrest regardless of who wins, according to immigration attorneys. While talk of moving overseas after an election is common, wealth advisors said this time many of the wealthy are already taking action. Volek said that for the first time, wealthy Americans are far and away the company's largest client base, accounting for 20% of its business, or more than any other nationality. He said the number of Americans making plans to move abroad is up at least 30% over last year. A survey by Arton Capital, which advises the wealthy on immigration programs, found that 53% of American millionaires say they're more likely to leave the U.S. after the election, no matter who wins.

The S&P 500 enjoyed a compound annual growth rate of 12.1% from Trump’s surprise election in November 2016 through Biden’s 2020 victory, according to CFRA. “The Trump market was so strong because of a combination of very low inflation, very low interest rates and tax cuts,” said Stovall. The S&P 500’s growth rate under Democrats is 10% compared with 6.7% under Republicans, according to CFRA. In those six years since 1945, where such a dynamic has been in place, the S&P 500 has enjoyed a sizzling growth rate of 16.8%. In fact, the market has generally performed better during times of higher, not lower, tax rates across changes in all three categories, BMO found.

Andrew Cuomo to the Department of Justice, alleging he made “criminally false statements” during closed-door testimony in June 2024. In the Republican-led committee’s referral, it says Cuomo “knowingly and willfully made materially false statements” to the panel during its investigation into the New York’s Covid-19 response. Cuomo also denied having discussions about the July 6 report being peer reviewed, according to the panel, which said documents show otherwise. The panel said Cuomo was not under oath during his testimony but was required to answer questions truthfully to Congress. Cuomo’s plan to centralize the pandemic response in the governor’s office also has received criticism, including from an independent report commissioned by his successor, Gov.

Agents might be emboldened to share listings among private networks of in-the-know brokers rather than market them to everyone. And if the goal is a transparent market that prioritizes consumers, the clear-cooperation policy is a flawed tool. Redfin estimated that in the second quarter of 2019, about 1.7% of listings, or some 18,000 homes, were likely pocketed. In a hot market, it's easier for brokers to market a home off the databases and still get it sold. What has changed since the rule went into effect is brokerages' eagerness to control access to home listings.

“(It) doesn’t matter who it is (that wins),” one social media user wrote in a popular comment on China’s X-like platform Weibo. “There’s no perfect system, but at least they allow people to question them,” one social media user said on Weibo. Both Harris and Trump have been hot topics on Chinese social media platforms. Partisans from both sides routinely cite early voting data to promote their candidates and express optimism or try to juice turnout based on supposedly weak numbers. Like many political observers, including at CNN, Musk has noticed the better-than-2020 GOP performance in early voting in North Carolina, Nevada and other key states. Registered Republicans make up about 32% of the early vote in Pennsylvania so far, up from 21% at this point in 2020. The improved GOP position in early voting that Musk highlighted is happening in other states as well. Self-harm: Why it happens and how to treat it

Editor’s Note: This story contains details of self-harm that some readers may find upsetting or triggering. She had just recently learned about self-harm after asking a friend about her many bandages and long sleeves. In 2019 there were 363,000 emergency department visits for self-harm, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Self-harm can also be a form of self-punishment among those feeling guilt or shame and thus like they deserve physical pain. You should of course use common sense and not let someone have their self-harm toolkit in their bedroom, for example, Whitlock added.

Europe’s biggest economy narrowly avoids recession

London CNN —Germany escaped a recession in the third quarter, official data showed Wednesday, offering some relief to Europe’s biggest economy as its fortunes falter. Destatis revised down GDP figures for the second quarter from -0.1% previously. Germany’s economy shrank last year for the first time since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. The outlook isn’t much brighter: the International Monetary Fund sees zero economic growth this year, marking the weakest performance among major economies. A sharp drop in profit at Volkswagen only intensified the bad news on economic growth.

The company said the removal of the non-dairy milk surcharge means customers who request it will pay around 10% less than they did previously. The 6-trillion-yuan worth of debt would be raised over three years including 2024, said the sources, adding the proceeds would primarily be used to help local governments address off-the-books debt risks. Local governments would be allowed to raise that amount on top of their usual annual issuance quota, which mainly funds infrastructure spending. The quota stood at 3.9 trillion yuan this year and 3.8 trillion in 2023. The latest move is aimed at enhancing local governments' ability to manage land supply, and alleviate liquidity and debt pressures on both local governments and property developers, they added. Special-purpose bonds are a tool for off-budget debt financing used by Chinese local governments, with the proceeds raised typically earmarked for specific policy objectives, such as infrastructure expenditures.

An eighth-inning rally capped by sacrifice flies by second baseman Gavin Lux and outfielder Mookie Betts put the Dodgers in front. This title, the eighth in franchise history, can stand beside the Dodgers’ trophy from the pandemic-shortened season in 2020.
