Doylestown, Pennsylvania CNN —Scott Presler has built a persona as a tall, very friendly, and gay face of the MAGA movement. His profile on X lists his location as “Make Kindness Cool Again.” Last week he smiled for every photo and shook hands with every fan who followed him to a county commissioners’ meeting in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The meeting itself was less chipper, with Presler’s acolytes repeatedly shouting “TRAITOR!” at a Democratic official, but Presler himself stayed upbeat. “For the first time in modern history, there are more registered Republicans than Democrats here in this county,” Presler said as he addressed the commissioners. On Kelly’s show, Presler called himself “a data guy,” and got into the weeds on voter registration numbers.

CNN —The morning after Donald Trump was reelected president, Justices Samuel Alito and Elena Kagan began jousting more than usual. More than other justices on their respective sides, conservative Alito and liberal Kagan are sharp-tongued strategic questioners. As usual, Alito and Kagan began referring to each other’s questions but with barely a glance toward the other at their elbow. Skeptical of the litigants’ case, Alito asked their lawyer Deepak Gupta why Huang would have put out financial information that could be quickly exposed as wrong. Then Alito said, “Well, I don’t want to derail … Justice Kagan had a number of hypotheticals, but I don’t want to interrupt that.”Kagan seemed miffed, but only slightly.

Last week, the Justice Department and a group of states presented the judge with a plethora of proposed remedies. It would also be barred from making itself the default search engine on its own products and disallowed from preferring its own products in search results. The test for a successful remedy is whether the market becomes more competitive, with higher output or a better experience for consumers. At this point, the Justice Department has not sufficiently explained why its proposed actions are an appropriate remedy. Some of the proposals were not addressed at any length in the judge’s opinion in the Google trial at all.

Walmart on Monday confirmed that it's ending some of its diversity initiatives, removing some LGBTQ-related merchandise from its website and winding down a nonprofit that funded programs for minorities. Those companies include Tractor Supply , which said in June it was eliminating DEI roles and stopping sponsorship of Pride festivals. Among the changes, Walmart will no longer allow third-party sellers to sell some LGBTQ-themed items on Walmart's website, including items marketed to transgender youth like chest binders, company spokeswoman Molly Blakeman said. It's also moved away from using the term "diversity, equity and inclusion" or DEI in company documents, employee titles and employee resource groups. Walmart's DEI changes were first reported by Bloomberg News.

Jack Smith arrived in Washington almost two years ago with expectations that his assignment to investigate Donald J. Trump would be profoundly consequential. Mr. Smith filed two federal indictments against Mr. Trump, the first ever against a former president. The Justice Department has a longstanding policy against prosecuting a sitting president. The legacy of Mr. Smith’s investigation is shaping up to be a complex one. And for all Mr. Smith’s efforts to avoid having his work enmeshed in politics, Mr. Trump essentially put the voters between himself and federal prosecutors.

The court heard she had been cornered in an office by police and paramedics and had refused to put down a steak knife when White deployed his Taser. Video released by the court shows Clare Nowland at the nursing home about 10 minutes before she was shocked by the Taser. Asked for his first impressions of Nowland, White agreed that she was elderly, but took issue with the suggestion she may have been frail. “You see this?” White asked her. The court heard White had the Taser pointed at Nowland, its light shining in her eyes, for one minute before he used it.

On Friday, a civil court jury awarded Hand nearly 250,000 euros (roughly $263,600), after finding McGregor liable for assault, according to the Courts Service in Ireland. Greg Abbott challenged President Joe Biden at almost every turn on the handling of the US southern border, as the state grappled with multiple border surges. Abbott described the upcoming border actions as a coordinated effort between border states and Washington. Texas officials and federal officials have historically worked together on the US-Mexico border. Texas state officials tout the work of their operation, arguing it served as a deterrent, and federal officials cite Biden’s executive action that levied harsher consequences for border crossers. “Texas has really been a lab for how mass round-ups of immigrants would work and how you can practically do it,” said Kristin Etter, the director of policy and legal Services at the Texas Immigration Law Council.

The federal elections case led to a Supreme Court ruling granting a president limited immunity for official acts. This is likely to reinforce Trump’s belief that he will have almost unchecked authority and will therefore reverberate through the next four years and generations to come. And by voting the way they did, Americans effectively exonerated him in the federal cases — on charges that could have landed him in jail. Hong Kong’s top court ruled on Tuesday to uphold inheritance and public housing benefits for same-sex married couples, a decision that supporters hailed as an important step toward expanding gay rights in the territory. Hong Kong does not recognize same-sex marriage, but the rulings brought an end to two protracted legal battles involving couples who married overseas. Nick Infinger, who married his husband in Canada, sued Hong Kong’s Housing Authority in 2018 after their joint application for public housing was denied. Mr. Ng died in 2020, and lower courts subsequently ruled in his favor. His husband, Henry Li, contested the Hong Kong government’s efforts to appeal those rulings.

Seoul, South Korea CNN —A South Korean man who ate to the point of obesity in an attempt to dodge the army has avoided prison after he pledged to take up his mandatory military service. The man, whose age was not revealed by the court, has since “expressed his intention to fulfill his military duty sincerely,” the ruling said. Women are exempt from compulsory conscription, and volunteer females account for only 3.6% of the Korean military, according to the Defense Ministry. In a 2018 survey, 72% of Korean men in their 20s said they thought the draft was a form of gender discrimination, and almost 65% believed women should also be conscripted. Nearly 83% said it was better to dodge military service if possible, and 68% believed it was a waste of time.

The developers would only need to reveal the training material that is “sufficient to identify with certainty” whether the copyright holder’s works were used. Failing to comply would create a legal assumption — until proven otherwise — that the AI developer did indeed use the copyrighted work. Sen. Peter Welch, D-Vt., who introduced the bill Thursday, said the country must “set a higher standard for transparency” as AI continues to integrate itself into Americans’ lives. “We need to give America’s musicians, artists, and creators a tool to find out when A.I. In today’s edition, senior politics reporter Alex Seitz-Wald breaks down the long-standing Democratic truisms that were challenged by the results of the 2024 elections. Here are five of the party’s core assumptions that have been challenged by the 2024 election outcome:1. Higher turnout benefits Democrats: Democrats have long taken for granted a simple truism: The more people who vote, the better for Democrats. NBC News exit polls show Trump won voters without college degrees 56%-42%, while he narrowly won voters with family incomes of $30,000 to $100,000 annually. In a decision that legal experts widely criticized and that Smith vowed to appeal, Cannon found that Smith had not been properly appointed as a special counsel. LONDON — He’s branded one U.S. ally's government “fascists” and another leader a “fool.” Now, Elon Musk has labeled Britain a “tyrannical police state” while endorsing calls for a new election and boosting a video from a jailed far-right activist. "The people of Britain have had enough of a tyrannical police state," Musk posted on his X platform, quoting a post about an online petition calling for another election that has now reached 2 million signatures. As Starmer's government works to overcome its own past public comments and build relations with Trump, Musk continues to attack it. Musk, who is known for picking fights online and retweeting far-right posts, also shared a post Saturday by Robinson — the jailed far-right activist and founder of the anti-immigrant English Defence League. Britain is not the only U.S. ally Musk has assailed publicly in recent weeks.
