Children born to European mothers exposed to four families of chemicals that disrupt the body’s endocrine (hormone) system had elevated levels of metabolic syndrome at ages 6 to 11. Metabolic syndrome can include obesity, elevated blood pressure, and abnormally high cholesterol and insulin resistance, which is a precursor to type 2 diabetes. Metabolic syndrome is typically associated with adult cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and stroke, but the growing epidemic of childhood obesity has seen symptoms appearing in kids at younger and younger ages. Having metabolic syndrome as a child is highly predictive of chronic disease as an adult, experts say.

The annual report provides a database of products by brand and type, while also breaking them down into the top recreational sunscreens, the best daily SPF (sun protection factor) and the safest sunscreens for babies and children. Many of the safest choices will be mineral-based instead of chemical-based sunscreens, said Emily Spilman, EWG’s healthy living science program manager. Mineral sunscreens work by physically deflecting and blocking the sun’s rays, as opposed to sunscreens with chemicals that absorb UV rays and release heat as they break down. In 2019, oxybenzone was an ingredient in 60% of all sunscreen products tested by EWG, dropping to 30% in 2022. By 2023 and again in 2024, the chemical was used in only 6% of tested products, which included sunscreens and daily moisturizers and lip balms with sunscreen protection.

Lifestyle influencer Jacqlyn Burnett was more excited this year to attend the country music festival Stagecoach for the first time than to go to Coachella. Stagecoach, the annual country music festival held this past weekend in Southern California, is rivaling the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival as the new favorite among brands and social-media influencers. From the growing interest in country music to fashion, influencers and brands flocked to Stagecoach this year. Some influencers, including Paige Lorenze, Maggie and Emma Macdonald, Estelle Lebourgeois, Chloe Trujillo, and Alyssa Lynch, even skipped Coachella for Stagecoach. Hong Kong-listed L'Occitane International 's chairman and controlling shareholder will take the French skin-care firm private, valuing it at a maximum of HK$13.91 billion (US$1.78 billion), the company said on Monday. As part of the deal, Austrian billionaire Geiger's investment holding company L'Occitane Groupe in Luxembourg will pay HK$34 for each share not already owned, representing a 30.8% premium to the stock's last close of HK$26 on Feb. 5. L'Occitane Groupe owned 72.39% of the cosmetics company at March-end. The investment holding firm does not intend to increase the offer price for the deal, which comes a few months after Geiger shelved a buyout attempt for the company. J.P. Morgan will be the financial advisor for L'Occitane Groupe.
