For Chinese imports, Trump has proposed an even steeper 60% tariff. Many economists have warned that tariffs planned by Trump will hurt global economic growth and drive up inflation in the US, as well as abroad if other countries introduce higher levies on US imports in response. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) also sees a hit to global gross domestic product from increased tariffs around the world, according to its latest World Economic Outlook. Mario Tama/Getty ImagesA rise in protectionism around the world means open trade is already under threat and the ability of its champion, the World Trade Organization, to settle international trade disputes is severely constrained. “What we’d see in Trump 2 is far more radical than what we saw in Trump 1.”

New York CNN —The leader of the Los Angeles Times’ editorial board said Wednesday she has resigned from her post in protest after the newspaper’s owner blocked a decision to endorse Kamala Harris in the presidential election. “I am resigning because I want to make it clear that I am not okay with us being silent,” Mariel Garza told the Columbia Journalism Review in an interview. Garza told CJR the editorial board had intended to endorse Harris, who previously served as a US Senator from California and the state’s attorney general. “I didn’t think we were going to change our readers’ minds—our readers, for the most part, are Harris supporters,” Garza told CJR. “This is a point in time where you speak your conscience no matter what,” Garza told CJR.

Not having — or losing — your sense of smell may be linked to changes in breathing that could lead to depression, social isolation or other mental and physical health problems, a new study suggests. About 72% of those completely regained their sense of smell, while about a quarter partially got their sense of smell back. Previous research has linked anosmia to a wide variety of negative outcomes, ranging from dulled emotions and depression to a shortened lifespan, the authors noted. CNN —The US Army has been ordered by a federal judge to release records related to former President Donald Trump’s controversial August visit to Arlington National Cemetery by Friday at the latest. The expedited release is a result of a lawsuit by American Oversight, a non-partisan watchdog nonprofit advocating for the release of government records. The group submitted a Freedom of Information Act request for any records relating to interactions between Trump campaign staff and the employee. CNN has asked the Army and the Trump campaign for comment. The incident also prompted the Army to issue the unusually sharp rebuke of the Trump campaign.

Last week, the University of Chicago Booth School of Business launched the Booth Family Office Initiative, a combination of research programs, courses and summits aimed at current and future family office executives. Business schools at Harvard, Columbia, Northwestern, Pepperdine and other universities have started offering courses aimed at family offices or family-owned companies. For family offices, the programs can help train the next generation of family office leaders at a time when talent is scarce and family offices are battling for experienced investors, accountants, lawyers and estate planners. The number of family offices has grown to more than 8,000 from about 6,000 in 2019, according to Deloitte. As more wealthy alumni launch family offices or work for one, they're becoming an important pipeline of donors and funding.

They worry that the expanded tax credit would reduce incentives to find a job, hurting the economy. The child tax credit “is a costly transfer program for taxpayers with kids who do not need government handouts,” the Cato Institute, a libertarian think tank, has said. In 2022, after one year, Congress allowed the expanded child tax credit to expire. While it was in effect, the expanded child tax credit reduced child poverty in the U.S. by nearly half, studies have found. JD Vance, Donald Trump’s running mate, has said he favors expanding the child tax credit as well, though he is vague on details.

As Election Day approaches, the campaigns are putting significant time and attention toward courting Black men, seen as a crucial — and potentially movable — voting bloc in a tight presidential race. However, that number drops to 68% for Black men under 50, compared to 21% who support Trump. “It’s very important to not operate from the assumption that Black men are in anybody’s pocket,” she said during an interview with the National Association of Black Journalists in September. For Trump’s part, efforts to reach Black men voters through campaign surrogates or Trump himself have lessened in recent months. Bartell also pointed to Kevin Cooper, a Black man on death row for killing a white family, as well as marijuana convictions of Black men.
