In the vast majority of independent surveys in New Mexico, Virginia and New Hampshire in recent weeks, Trump has trailed by more than 5 points. A second Trump campaign official who was granted anonymity to speak freely said that if it is going to a state, it’s because the campaign sees movement there. Since 2020, states like Arizona have shown rightward movement that potentially bodes well for Trump, Blair said. Trump doesn't have time to waste at this stage of the race, the second campaign official said. Both spoke at Trump's New York rally, and Gabbard joined Trump days earlier in North Carolina, a swing state.

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Wednesday allowed Republican officials in Virginia to revive a plan aimed at removing noncitizen voters from the rolls ahead of next week’s election. Virginia has same-day voter registration, meaning that any eligible voter who was removed from the rolls should still be able to vote. The Justice Department said that while states can review its voter rolls, it cannot do so right before an election. States are barred from systematically removing people from voters rolls within 90 days of an election under the National Voter Registration Act. In court papers, the groups said that "the record makes clear that citizens are being removed from the voter rolls."

Donald Trump proposed mass deportation to lower housing costs and boost job opportunities. AdvertisementThe mass deportation of people living in the US illegally has been one of the cornerstones of the Republican presidential ticket leading up to the November election. Many Democrats say mass deportations would hurt businesses and employment opportunities for all Americans, in addition to separating families and displacing millions of people. She told BI that a mass deportation would devastate the agriculture, construction, and hospitality industries. CNN —Democrats are mounting an unprecedented digital advertising campaign in the closing weeks of the presidential race, pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into a targeted effort that the party hopes will tip the balance in one of the closest elections in US history. The effort is being steered by Future Forward PAC, or FF PAC, the largest single-candidate super PAC in the 2024 election. The 2024 election is poised to break the record set by the 2020 election and see $10.2 billion worth of campaign advertising, according to the ad tracking firm AdImpact. The ad laboratoryWith its massive war chest, FF PAC has faced the challenge of effectively and efficiently distributing its resources. FF PAC has not engaged in a comparable turnout effort, leaving that traditional campaign activity to the cash-flush Harris operation.

On Monday, British tech lobby group Startup Coalition warned in a blog post that there was a risk Reeves' tax plans could result in a tech "brain drain.". (Photo by Oli Scarff/Getty Images)LONDON — Britain's Labour government on Wednesday announced plans to raise the rate of capital gains tax on share sales, news that offered some relief for technology entrepreneurs who feared a more intense tax raid on the wealthy. Finance Minister Rachel Reeves on Wednesday hiked capital gains tax (CGT) — a levy on the profit investors make from the sale of an investment — as part of her far-reaching budget announcement. The lower capital gains tax rate will be increased to 18% from 10%, while the higher rate will climb to 24% from 20%, Reeves said. She stressed that this still represented a "significant gap compared to the higher rate of capital gains tax."

An Australian one dollar coin sits atop a United States one dollar bill in this illustration photo taken February 12, 2016. The dollar hovered close to a three-month peak on Wednesday in a big week for macroeconomic data that could reveal the path for U.S. monetary policy. The Australian dollar edged closer to a three-month trough after some stickiness in inflation suggested a Reserve Bank of Australia interest rate cut is unlikely this year. The ADP employment report is due later in the day, ahead of the potentially crucial monthly payrolls report on Friday. "The U.S. dollar continues to garner strong support as markets adjust their rate path expectations," said James Kniveton, senior corporate FX dealer at Convera.

CNN —Up to 35 ISIS operatives were killed in US strikes against multiple ISIS camps in Syria on Monday evening, the US military announced on Wednesday. “US Central Command forces conducted a series of strikes against several known ISIS camps in Syria, in the early evening of Oct. 28, resulting in up to 35 ISIS operatives killed,” the release, posted on X, said. “The strikes targeted multiple ISIS locations in the Syrian desert, targeting multiple ISIS senior leaders.”It is unclear if the targeted senior leaders were included in the 35 operatives killed. Monday’s strikes are the latest in what appears to be an uptick of operations against ISIS in the Middle East, which have now resulted in dozens of operatives being killed. Earlier this month, Iraqi Security Forces killed four ISIS members, including a senior leader.

Harris delivered a "closing argument" speech at the same spot Trump held his January 6 rally. AdvertisementOn Tuesday evening, exactly one week out from the end of the 2024 race, Vice President Kamala Harris delivered a speech in the heart of Washington, DC that her campaign described as their "closing argument." Her choice to hold the rally at the Ellipse, a 52-acre park sandwiched between the White House and the Washington Monument, was all-important. Harris talked about January 6 in her rally, noting that former President Donald Trump "stood at this very spot" when he delivered his speech that day. Following that result, parties have 30 days to try to form a coalition government and pick a prime minister. It's still unclear what the exact makeup of a coalition government could look like, clouding the outlook for both economic policy and Ishiba's fate. Asia-Pacific markets are set to open higher, tracking gains on Wall Street as investors looked toward a slate of megacap technology earnings to keep propelling the Nasdaq Composite to new heights this week. Japan's Nikkei 225 futures pointed to a slightly stronger open for the market, with the futures contract in Chicago at 38,715 and its counterpart in Osaka at 38,630 compared to the previous close of 38,605.53. This comes after the ruling Liberal Democratic Party lost its parliamentary majority after voters cast their ballots on Sunday to determine the control of the lower house, marking the first time since 2009 that Japan's ruling coalition lost its majority. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 was 0.44% higher in its first hour of trade. Hong Kong's Hang Seng index futures were at 20,733, higher than the HSI's last close of 20,599.36.

At the national level, the middle class is typically defined as households that earn between two-thirds and double the household median income. Based on 2023 figures, that means those with an annual income between $53,740 and $161,220. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the annual rate of inflation was 2.4% in September, as measured by the consumer price index. But that hasn't necessarily led to a dramatic decline in prices; in many categories, consumers have only seen costs rising more slowly. "Financially, things have been a struggle," said Kyle Connolly, a mother of three making a middle-class income in Pensacola, Florida.

Brown University suspended its chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine after the group led a rally protesting the university's decision not to divest its endowment from certain companies that support Israel. Chapter members were told of the suspension on Oct. 24, the group said, nearly a week after their Oct. 18 protest. Brown Divest Coalition first led a series of protests in April calling for the university’s governing board to divest. While university officials did review a student proposal outlining why the board should divest from 10 companies, it ultimately decided not to do so. The university’s governing body voted against the proposal on Oct. 8, with students organizing a protest in response on Oct. 18.

TOKYO — The makeup of Japan’s future government was in flux on Monday after voters punished Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba’s scandal-tainted ruling coalition in a weekend election, leaving no party with a clear mandate to lead the world’s fourth-largest economy. The biggest winner of the night, the main opposition Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan (CDPJ), had 148 seats, up from 98 previously, but also still well short of the 233 majority. But days before the vote, a newspaper affiliated with the Japan Communist Party reported that the party had provided campaign funds to branches headed by non-endorsed candidates. “LDP’s payments to branches show utter lack of care for public image,” ran an editorial in the influential Asahi newspaper two days before the election. In one bright spot, a record 73 women were elected into Japan’s male-dominated parliament, surpassing 54 at the 2009 election.
