Cleveland led 3-1 in the eighth before Aaron Judge hit a two-run homer off All-Star closer Emmanuel Clase and Giancarlo Stanton followed with a solo drive. The Fry and Noel shots came after Judge and Stanton had connected for their homers, putting the Yankees up 4-3 against Clase. But the Guardians aren’t done, and still have a chance to end the longest World Series drought, stretching to 1948. The 30th postseason matchup between the Guardians and Yankees was another tightly contested matchup between two franchises who know each other well this time of year. Cleveland finally got some length from a starter as Matthew Boyd went five innings, the most Guardians manager Stephen Vogt has permitted this postseason.

CLEVELAND — The baseball gods work in the shadows, scripting moments and matchups and sequences that we couldn’t begin to fathom. Take, for instance, the night of June 26, when Matthew Boyd just so happened to flip on a Cleveland Guardians game to gauge the pulse of the team desperate for his services. But in late June, shortly before Noel arrived, he suffered an elbow injury that the Guardians have kept discreet. “I’m like, ‘No, I’m just not hitting well, Dad,’” Fry said. This was the baseball gods working overtime to deliver us October goodness, a beautiful blend of tangled storylines and jaw-dropping momentum shifts.

PHILADELPHIA — Philadelphia Eagles coach Nick Sirianni apologized Monday for gesturing and jawing at fans in the final moments of a win during which restless fans booed a listless performance and “Fire Nick!” chants permeated pockets at Lincoln Financial Field. Sirianni — a habitual trash-talker — put a finger to his right ear and chirped at fans in the first rows at the Linc on Sunday. The fourth-year coach added the Eagles “don’t necessarily like it” when fans boo at home games. Sirianni struck a conciliatory tone for his behavior a day later after his boorish behavior was ripped by fans and media. He earned a reprieve from Lurie — only to find himself swirling in controversy again for failing to keep his emotions in check against Eagles fans.

Quarterbacks Jayden Daniels versus Lamar Jackson should be pure fireworks, but it's far from the only intriguing matchup this weekend. Henry has scored in all five games this season while rushing for a league-high 572 yards. Considering down and distance, Henry has rushed for 229 yards more than expected, according to advanced NFL stats. Kirk Cousins, meanwhile, is fifth in passing yards per game despite a slow start for Atlanta’s offense. The Lions are conceding 349.0 yards per game, 11th-worst in the NFL.

They are the second MLB team to earn an invitation to the league championship series and, yes, they’re aware of the other: the New York Mets. In the 55 seasons of LCS play, this will be just the third to feature both the Yankees and Mets. You might remember the others: 1999, when only the Yankees won, and 2000, when New York City had the World Series all to itself. We’re still hungry — at least in New York, where the World Series seemed like a birthright in the years before expansion.
