CNN —The last few weeks have brought unthinkable upheaval in Haiti, a country that is no stranger to tragedy and suffering. Nothing can compare to the current upheaval in Haiti though, and I would expect new waves of Haitians to seek refuge on foreign shores. Haiti needs help combating corruption and loosening the stranglehold that the country’s oligarchic masters have on its economy. He remains sequestered in Haiti however, because he knows that leaving would mean his business would be looted and pillaged. Although formidable challenges lie ahead, the path to peace and stability in Haiti is possible with help from Washington.

In Henry’s place, a transitional council will be established and endowed with some powers of the presidency – including the ability to name a new interim prime minister. It is unclear how long it could take to establish a transitional council to begin the transfer of power, though Haiti’s former PM Claude Joseph told CNN that it could be created within 24 hours. The big question is whether these changes can bring calm to Haiti, and put a stop to the terrible violence tearing apart Haiti’s capital Port-au-Prince. Talks with regional leaders continued, leading into the emergency CARICOM meeting on Monday. The United States will contribute $300 million to the Kenyan-led multinational security mission, Blinken said after attending the CARICOM meeting on Monday.

The second-largest donation in 2022 to the non-profit arm of Future Forward, the primary Super PAC supporting Biden, came from a group run by James McClave and Emily Berger. That’s more than any group other than the George Soros-linked Open Society Policy Center, which gave $15.2 million that year. That trend is set to continue this year: Future Forward has announced plans to run the largest ever political advertising campaign by a Super PAC in 2024. A spokesperson for Future Forward did not respond to a request for comment. A group of roughly 600 software testers at Activision on Friday formed the U.S. video game industry's largest union so far. The union is the first to organize under a new labor agreement negotiated as part of Microsoft's $69 billion acquisition of Activision in October, the company's largest takeover yet. Activision Quality Assurance United-CWA, the name of the union, is seeking higher wages and more career opportunities, QA tester Kara Fannon said in a statement. Before the Microsoft-Activision deal closed, QA workers at the video game-maker's Albany branch had also formed a union. "QA is currently an undervalued discipline in the games and software industries," the Albany wrote on social media at the time.

Any filmmaker trying to draw meaning from the Holocaust onscreen faces potential pitfalls. Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest,” a dark horse candidate for best picture at the Academy Awards on Sunday, avoids all of these traps and finds something new and profoundly unsettling to say about the Holocaust. “Zone” is ostensibly about the genocide of European Jewry, but its focus is not on the Jewish victims, who remain almost entirely offscreen. Rather, Mr. Glazer exposes the perpetrators to the scrutiny of the audience’s gaze. “Zone” depicts the life of Rudolf Höss, the commandant of Auschwitz, and his family at their handsome estate just outside the walls of the death camp.

"The Perks of Being a Wallflower," "The Fault in Our Stars," "New Moon" — none are safe from copyright infringement by leading artificial intelligence models, according to research released Wednesday by Patronus AI. The company, founded by ex-Meta researchers, specializes in evaluation and testing for large language models — the technology behind generative AI products. Alongside the release of its new tool, CopyrightCatcher, Patronus AI released results of an adversarial test meant to showcase how often four leading AI models respond to user queries using copyrighted text. The four models it tested were OpenAI's GPT-4, Anthropic's Claude 2, Meta's Llama 2 and Mistral AI's Mixtral. Patronus only tested the models using books under copyright protection in the U.S., choosing popular titles from cataloging website Goodreads.

I asked her excitedly in French, “What do you think about the abortion rights thing?”“C’est fou, hein?” she said. She continued, “Trump, he wants to reverse abortion rights. Unbelievable.”“Oh!” I said, “I meant about how France is writing abortion rights into the Constitution.”“Oh that?” she said, less excitedly. On the other hand, French women were allowed to open their own checking accounts in 1965 — horrific until you realize that their American counterparts were not granted that right until 1974. This time last year, Anthropic was seen as a promising generative AI startup founded by ex-OpenAI research executives. "In our quest to have a highly harmless model, Claude 2 would sometimes over-refuse," Amodei told CNBC. Multimodality, or adding options like photo and video capabilities to generative AI, whether uploading them yourself or creating them using an AI model, has quickly become one of the industry's hottest use cases. But multimodality, and increasingly complex AI models, also lead to more potential risks. "Of course no model is perfect, and I think that's a very important thing to say upfront," Amodei told CNBC.

Apple on Monday announced new versions of its 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air laptops with its latest M3 chip. The M3 chip first launched in October, when Apple launched versions of the chip for its iMac desktop computer and more powerful versions of the processor for its MacBook Pro laptops. The new M3 chip allows users to add up to two external displays, an improvement from a single screen supported by earlier chips. It called the new MacBook Air the "world's best consumer laptop for AI." The 13-inch MacBook Air starts at $1,099, while the 15-inch starts at $1,299.

start-up Anthropic released a new version of its Claude chatbot on Monday, saying it outperforms other leading chatbots on a range of standard benchmark tests, including systems from Google and OpenAI. Dario Amodei, Anthropic’s chief executive and co-founder, said the new technology, called Claude 3 Opus, was particularly useful when analyzing scientific data or generating computer code. Anthropic is among a small group of companies at the forefront of generative A.I., technology that instantly creates text, images and sounds. Dr. Amodei and other Anthropic founders helped pioneer the technology while working as researchers at OpenAI, the start-up that launched the generative A.I. Chatbots like ChatGPT can answer questions, write term papers, generate small computer programs and more.

"We don't comment on rumors," Kon told CNBC. Although Cohere is often mentioned alongside AI heavyweights like OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Microsoft , the startup's focus on enterprise-only chatbots has set it apart. In November, Cohere told CNBC it saw an uptick in customer interest after OpenAI's sudden and temporary ouster of CEO Sam Altman. Cohere's relationships with strategic investors are another area where it differs from generative AI competitors, Kon said. Search, Kon said, is a key piece of generative AI that's getting less attention than other areas.

Claude Montana, the audacious and haunted French designer whose exquisite tailoring defined the big-shouldered power look of the 1980s — an erotic and androgenous tough chic that brought him fame and accolades until he was felled by drugs and tragedy in the ’90s — died on Friday in France. The Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode confirmed the death but not specify a cause or say where he died. “His clothes were fierce, with a power that was both militaristic and highly eroticized,” said Valerie Steele, director of the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology. “It was not the American power look of the shoulder-padded executive. His was a different kind of working woman.”Mr. Montana often drew inspiration from the after-hours world of the Paris demimonde — the sex workers and dominatrixes, the denizens of the leather bars he frequented.

Hideous are the demands a best-selling pop star made before agreeing to attend Mr. Chavarria’s show on Friday and a lavish dinner party at Jean’s that will follow. Read previewNetflix's "Raël: The Alien Prophet" is perhaps one of its most gripping docuseries yet. The show delves into the world of a controversial French cult known as the Raëlian Movement, which claimed that it created the world's first human clone in the early 2000s. The Raëlian movement was convinced that cloning humans would lead to immortality. In "Raël: The Alien Prophet," Boisselier maintains that Eve is doing well, although she has little contact with her. BETTER PROTECTIONGianfranco Talarico started the company after watching a youth player get sliced in the thigh by a skate blade, just missing a femoral artery. Talarico has many times since cited research that found lacerations — often to the face, presumably from sticks as well as skates — to be a leading cause of emergency room visits among ice hockey players in the U.S. from 1990-2006. The death of Connecticut high school player Teddy Balkind from a skate cut to the neck in 2022 brought the conversation back to the forefront.
