Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign is making its latest push to Asian American voters, releasing a personal ad about her mother, Shyamala Gopalan. The 60-second ad, titled “My Mother,” highlights Harris’ speaking about her mom at the Democratic National Convention last month, alongside pictures and videos of Gopalan, who died in 2009. “My mother was a brilliant 5-foot-tall brown woman with an accent,” Harris said at the convention. At Berkeley, Gopalan became involved in the U.S. Civil Rights Movement, which is how she met Harris’ father, Donald Harris. New York AP —A New York woman is challenging the longstanding rules of Miss America and Miss World that disqualify mothers from their beauty pageants. A spokesperson for the human rights commission said the agency does not comment on open investigations. Allred noted that she previously had success challenging a similar rule for a California mother denied eligibility to compete in the Miss California pageant, which is part of the Miss Universe and Miss USA organizations. Didusenko, who has since created an organization advocating for an end to beauty pageant bans on mothers, said she lost her legal challenge in Ukraine but is seeking relief from the European Court of Human Rights.

Vice President Kamala Harris on Tuesday laid out how her economic proposals could specifically help young Black men, a key Democratic voting bloc that polls show Republican former President Donald Trump gaining ground with in this election cycle. "I think it's very important to not operate from the assumption that Black men are in anybody's pocket," Harris said in a sit-down interview with a panel from the National Association of Black Journalists. A new poll by the civil rights group NAACP released Friday found that more than a quarter of Black men under 50 years old support Trump over Harris. At NABJ, she described embarking on an "economic opportunity tour focused on Black men" earlier this year, before she was a candidate for president. Proposals like these could help Harris address two distinct vulnerabilities for the Democratic party in this election cycle: public perceptions of the economy, and young Black men who lean toward voting for Trump.

The law Biden signed seeks to ban TikTok on Americans’ personal devices unless its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, quickly sells TikTok to someone else — which may effectively end the app as we currently know it. TikTok will not get the luxury of a full trial to argue for its continued existence in its current form. But it won’t be alone: A group of TikTok creators also suing the Biden administration will go next, with 10 minutes to speak. Court filings show that TikTok and US national security officials had hammered out a draft proposal to address the security concerns. The question is whether all that amounts to enough influence over ByteDance and TikTok to gain access to US TikTok users’ data, in spite of the guardrails promised by Project Texas.
