But A24’s newly restored 40th anniversary print of the band’s legendary concert film “Stop Making Sense” feels like a moment for a reappraisal. Talking Heads’ lyrics are undeniably more elliptical than N.W.A.’s or the Dead Kennedys’. “Stop Making Sense” starts off within the bounds of that New Wave approach. Byrne’s idiosyncratic dancing and physical appearance are central to “Stop Making Sense,” and he never stops being malfunctioning, android or ectomorph. “Stop Making Sense” included singers Lynn Mabry and Ednah Hold, legendary Parliament-Funkadelic keyboardist Bernie Worrell, percussionist Steve Scales and The Brothers Johnson guitarist Alex Weir.

By Alexander TanasCHISINAU (Reuters) - Moldova's restive Gagauzia region, locked in an uneasy relationship for 30 years with central authorities in Moldova, endorsed the composition of its local executive committee on Wednesday, a key decision for national institutions. The Executive Committee was elected on the seventh attempt -- after new Bashkan Yevgeniya Gutul withdrew nominations for deputies approved by Shor. "I intend to work constructively with you," Gutul said after the executive line-up was approved. As part of her election campaign, Gutul pledged to open a diplomatic mission for Gagauzia in Moscow. Sandu has delayed including Gutul in Moldova's government -- as required by Moldova's constitution -- pending the outcome of investigations into her election with Shor's backing.

Why Are We Obsessed With the Destruction of L.A.?

For them the flooding was ordained by God, a sign that they were vindicated in a running feud with the team. For many of these conservatives, the ultimate decision to host the Sisters earned the Dodgers a special place in hell. The next day, the Dodgers’ official X and Instagram accounts posted images of a dry and sunny scene at the ballpark. In the movies, L.A. is the place where everything goes wrong; at least the rest of the nation can take lessons from its failures. How, I wonder, does the new visual language of social media train us to understand the world?

[1/2] Former Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum reacts after she was nominated as a presidential candidate, in Mexico City, Mexico September 6, 2023. "It's extraordinary in a patriarchal country," said Josefina Vazquez Mota, who made history in 2012 as the first female presidential candidate for one of Mexico's main parties. "Just imagine having a female president in a country as macho as Mexico!" Mexican women did not win full voting rights until 1953, 33 years after the neighboring United States. Today, Vazquez Mota said, her PAN ally Galvez no longer had to respond to whether Mexico was ready for a female president.

Postal Service on Friday rolled out its latest special edition postage stamps, paying homage to a tradition with global roots that has evolved over centuries to become a universal symbol of celebration. It was through dance, music and the arts — including the making of piñatas — that biblical stories were spread throughout the New World. "Nativity scenes, piñatas, posadas — all those things really worked well. (The cruelty and neglect at these schools was real but the specific claims about graves at the B.C. school have outrun the so-far scanty evidence.) The first is a general tendency of provincial leaders to go overboard in establishing their solidarity and identification with the elites of the imperial core. The second point is the role of secularization and de-Christianization, which are further advanced in the British Isles and Canada than in the United States. Then the third point is that smaller countries with smaller elites can find it easier to enforce ideological conformity than countries that are more sprawling and diverse.

Sen. Mike Lee suggested that the disaster at Burning Man was caused by divine intervention. "God's judgement is real," he tweeted, highlighting wild sexual activities performed at the festival. He also mused about attendees converting to Christianity after being stranded by a rainstorm. One person has died, and some attendees are fleeing the festival by hiking through the mud as others ration out their food. President Joe Biden was briefed about the situation at Burning Man on Sunday, according to a White House official, while Democratic Sen. Jacky Rosen of Nevada said she was "monitoring the situation at Burning Man closely."

The annual weeklong Burning Man festival, which is held in Nevada's Black Rock Desert, faced a series of challenges this year. CNN —In a move surprising even for a mercurial figure like Vivek Ramaswamy, the millionaire businessman this past week took a backhanded swipe at fellow Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley. For many Indian Americans and many Anglo Indians like me, Ramaswamy’s line of attack might not seem particularly surprising. With his jab at Haley, Ramaswamy almost certainly was not looking to ingratiate himself with Indian Americans. And on the whole, surveys show that nearly seven in 10 Indian voters in the United States identify as Democrats or lean Democratic. This did Ramaswamy no favors with Indian voters, especially Indian women.

So what he’d like — well, here’s the quote:I can easily imagine a “church for the nones.” (It would need a more appealing name.) I could attend a Christian church on Sundays and teach my daughter about other beliefs the rest of the week. With all my reservations, I don’t really want to join an existing church. And I don’t think I am going to have much luck getting my fellow nones to join something I start. My sense is that the people who want what church provides are going to the existing Christian churches, even if they are skeptical of some of the beliefs.

Gail Collins: She seemed generally reasonable and wow, when the debate turned to education and she actually brought up reading. If there’s any life left in the old G.O.P., Haley gave it hope. Perhaps more important, in taking on the glib and callow Ramaswamy on Ukraine, she showed anger and dominance, essential qualities in a Republican debate. I went to the feed as well and found it chilling, and not simply because of the obvious hatred for L.G.B.T. It was chilling to me in part because it wasn’t substantially different from the sentiments I see and hear all the time from right-wing Christians in the age of Trump. Mixed in with the account’s strident anti-L.G.B.T. rhetoric and conspiracy theories were posts endorsing Christianity, including some that would otherwise suggest a compassionate heart. The account reposted, for instance, a post that read: “When your heart is hurting and you have nothing left to pray, speak the name of Jesus.

A 9th century gravesite unearthed in England suggests ancient settlers may have feared the undead. Researchers with the Museum of London Archeology discovered a 15-year-old girl buried face-down. Archeologists, however, discovered the Conington girl buried face-down in a pit that marked the entrance to the small settlement and believe her ankles may have also been tied together, according to the MOLA statement. Sydney, Australia CNN —A Sydney court on Thursday acquitted the founder of global megachurch Hillsong of covering up child sexual abuse committed by his father in the 1970s. Some background and context: Until 2013 I was a Roman Catholic, and as a journalist and broadcaster with a fairly high profile, spoke and wrote frequently in support of Catholic sexual teachings. And according to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, homosexual acts are “intrinsically disordered” and “contrary to the natural law.” Pope Francis has made some soothing and compromising comments but, at heart, very little has changed. As a result, I was roundly attacked by Christian conservatives, Catholic as well as Protestant. I made a public apology in my syndicated newspaper column for harm caused to the LGBTQ+ community by my writing and broadcasting. I’m now a priest, spend my time trying to preach the genuine song of the Gospels, and write books and columns doing the same.

Instead, I managed to entangle myself in an argument about a different totalitarianism-related question: whether the destruction of Hitler’s Germany was a true and righteous judgment of Almighty God. The style of far-right thought involved in both stories takes Western decadence as a given, while arguing that Christianity is a weak vessel for any kind of cultural revival. Its big idea is that a conservatism that looks to classical and pagan sources, and embraces some kind of racial identitarianism could be more, well, vital in its engagement with the times. The decay and decadence of Western Christianity makes the return of right-wing Nietzscheanism inevitable. But Christians can say with some warrant that God’s judgment on that project is evident already.

KAHULUI, Hawaii, Aug 11 (Reuters) - The death toll from a wildfire that killed at least 55 people on Hawaii's Maui island was expected to rise on Friday, as search teams prepared to comb through the charred ruins of a historic resort town for more victims. "Understand this: Lahaina Town is hallowed, sacred ground right now," Maui Police Chief John Pelletier said, referring to humans remains that have yet to be recovered. In addition to searching for the missing, officials were drafting a plan to house the newly homeless in hotels and tourist rental properties. The Lahaina fire is one of three major wildfires on Maui. There was no estimate for the Upcountry fire in the center of the eastern mass of the island, Maui County said.

For two decades, Ilya Solkan served as the parish priest in a tiny Ukrainian village outside the capital, Kyiv. He baptized babies, blessed marriages and conducted funerals. The Orthodox church stood at the heart of the village and Mr. Solkan was central to its life. The removal of Mr. Solkan, a priest with no public profile beyond his home village, reflects the gradual rejection by much of Ukrainian society of a church that answers to Moscow — a process that has been accelerated by the war. Specifically, it speaks to the division between the two branches of Orthodox Christianity, the most predominant religion in Ukraine.
