NEW YORK, May 23 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Banks can tune out one painful summer rerun. Television broadcaster Tegna (TGNA.N) on Tuesday terminated its sale to hedge fund Standard General, letting banks off the hook for $8.2 billion in debt backing the deal. As a result, Standard General couldn’t finance its transaction. Chipping away at the $25 billion-plus pile of hung loans potentially frees banks up to start fresh. The dollar isn't going away, but other assets classes are slowly chipping away at its dominance. The US dollar is the world's top reserve currency — by far. CFOTO/Future Publishing via Getty ImagesThe US dollar has been the world's reserve currency since the second world war, playing a crucial role in the world's trade. In 1999, over 70% of the world's foreign exchange reserves were held in the US dollar. Even alternative currencies like the Swedish krona, the South Korean won, and the Australian and Canadian dollars have been chipping away at the greenback's share.

It is looking at what categories were successful at nearby – and closing – Bed Bath & Beyond stores. The off-price giant has been called out frequently by analysts as being one of the key beneficiaries of Bed Bath & Beyond's recent demise. Herrman said it is "re-ranking" its assortment only at its HomeGoods stores that are located near to any closing Bed Bath & Beyond locations, rather than making broad changes across all of its network. It's not just TJ Maxx and HomeGoods that are teeing up for a Bed Bath & Beyond-related windfall, however. Amazon, Walmart, and Target are also in line to capitalize from these closures and have been slowly chipping away at Bed Bath & Beyond's market share for many years.
The Meta Platforms Inc. office building in the 'Silicon Docks' area in central Dublin, Ireland, on Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2022. Ireland is considering funneling some of the bumper tax income it's receiving from the many multinationals based in the country into a new sovereign wealth fund. Ireland's corporate tax receipts have rocketed over the last decade and have hit record highs since the pandemic, rising 30% year-on-year in 2021 and up another 48% in 2022 to a record 22.6 billion euros ($24.8 billion). That has come from tech giants including Alphabet, Meta, Intel, LinkedIn and Amazon, along with firms like Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson. The government expects this to swell further in the coming years, with the surplus totaling 65 billion euros over four years and potentially hitting 6.3% of gross national income — GDP plus all net receipts — by 2026.
Labor experts agree that AI tools can make workers more productive. Insider's Aaron Mok tested 4 AI tools for a week to see if they can boost productivity. AI tools like OpenAI's ChatGPT have taken the world by storm — and workers are using them to make their jobs easier. Many experts agree that AI tools can boost productivity, and people have already used ChatGPT and other AI tools to generate articles, write code, and produce real estate listings in attempts to save time. AI tools will not do your job, but they can make it easier if you spend time learning how to use themAfter playing with these tools for a week, I realized that there's a learning curve.
Recent events may be chipping away at confidence in the U.S. financial system, according to the findings of a Gallup survey. Nearly half of the 1,013 adults polled said they were "very worried" (19%) or "moderately worried" (29%) about the safety of the money they had tucked away in a bank or other financial institution, Gallup said. The level of concern expressed in the poll is similar to the findings that Gallup found shortly after the collapse of Lehman Brothers in September, 2008. Still, a December 2008 reading had shown sentiment had already improved from those worst levels as steps were taken to ease the impact of the financial crisis. When the poll was conducted from April 3-25 this year, Signature Bank and Silicon Valley Bank had already failed.
How Joe Biden Can Win in 2024 - The New York Times

For months, Democrats have been frustrated with the gap between Mr. Biden’s accomplishments and the public’s awareness of them. The timing is right, because these programs are starting to have a big impact on the lives of many Americans. The administration says it has financed over 4,600 bridge repair and replacement projects across the country. Since his indictment by a Manhattan grand jury, his grip on the party, at least based on recent polling evidence, has grown tighter. That may be good news for his campaign, but he has significant vulnerabilities in a general election.
Missouri this month became the first state in the country to severely restrict gender treatments for people of all ages, following a series of quieter moves across the country that have been chipping away at transgender adults’ access to medical care. Last year, Florida joined six other states in banning Medicaid from covering some form of gender care for transgender people of all ages. These bans affect an estimated 38,000 beneficiaries of the public insurance program, according to the Williams Institute, a research center at U.C.L.A.’s law school. And in at least five states, Republican legislators have proposed bills that would abolish gender care for minors as well as young adults. The rule also said that patients should not receive gender treatments until any mental health issues are “resolved.”
But even by the standards of the profession, the language in Dominion's $1.6 billion lawsuit against Fox News has been downright apocalyptic. A victory for Dominion against Fox, they say, could wreak havoc for other journalism organizations across the country. The sheer closeness between Trump and Fox News makes a case like this unlikely to harm journalism organizations down the line, Goodale said. The vast majority of defamation cases against media organizations are settled, which gives few high-profile precedents to the Dominion lawsuit. "And that's the balance that the Sullivan court strike tried to strike in 1964.

Not very many electric cars are expected to qualify for the EV tax credits as new rules set in. Automakers, who are pouring billions of dollars into making their product lineups electric, can't afford for their customers to not go EV. Lucid has already offered customers $7,500 off certain trims of its vehicles, which do not qualify for the federal tax credits by requirements around sticker price alone. And Tesla on Friday lowered the price of many of its vehicles, some of which will likely now no longer qualify for the tax credits. GM isn't anticipating turning a profit on electric cars until 2025.

With no sign of the protests abating, insiders question whether Borne's government has lost control of the political messaging necessary to appease the street. The situation has deteriorated considerably since Macron decided on March 16 to adopt the reform using special constitutional powers to bypass parliament. When asked about the divisions, the president's office said the majority of Macron's camp remained strong and united. "There are still ministers who are saying 'we should have done this or that', No!," the source lamented. An official in Borne's office said the prime minister had made efforts to preserve unity among ministers and lawmakers.

"There's a certain amount of gaslighting that goes on, too, from management," she told Insider. Google (GOOGL), which for years ranked as the top company to work for in the United States, laid off thousands of workers by e-mail. During her early years there, she worked in marketing and became known as the “The Bard of Google” for the internal emails she sent celebrating the company’s culture. Google employee affected by January layoffs“The problem was, suddenly, you didn’t work for a company that was sending stuff to space or building autonomous cars,” Rout said. Hundreds of Google employees in Switzerland staged a walkout last week to protest layoffs, partly out of frustration with the lack of transparency. About a month before the January layoffs, one former employee said Google painted “You Belong” on one of the walls in their working area.

Tech Giants Are Chipping In Fast on AI

Broadcom said it has seen a jump in demand from customers seeking to enhance their networks for generative AI. Tech giants are moving fast on artificial intelligence, even if they have to hit the brakes elsewhere. The latest confirmation of that trend came from an unexpected source. Broadcom , a chip maker most commonly associated with radio-frequency components used in the iPhone, used its fiscal first-quarter results late last week to discuss the increase in business it is seeing from customers scrambling to beef up their networks for generative AI—the technology made popular by the ChatGPT chatbot tool that Microsoft is now wrapping into its Bing search engine to take on rival Google. Google is responding by working to integrate its own generative AI technology into its search tool.
But genetically modified wheat has never been grown for commercial purposes due to consumer fears that allergens or toxicities could emerge in a staple used worldwide for bread, pasta and pastries. Australia grows and exports GM cotton and canola, and the country in May approved Bioceres’ biotech wheat for use in foods. Mexico, among the largest buyers of U.S. corn, has said it will halt GM corn imports for human consumption, but walked back a deadline to ban the corn for animal feed. Recent disruptions to global wheat supplies have brought a new degree of urgency to the debate over biotech wheat. Wheat Associates and the National Association of Wheat Growers, support “the eventual commercialization” of biotech wheat, according to their websites, provided that plans are implemented to minimize market disruptions.
Twitter is subleasing 200,000 square feet of office space in Manhattan, Bloomberg reported. This past weekend, Musk laid off hundreds of staffers, including some of his most loyal employees. Now, he's chipping away at the company's office space, too. Twitter is not the only major tech company to cut back on office space in New York. Late last year, Meta also pulled back on office space in Manhattan's Hudson Yards as part of an effort to lower expenses.
