First, beauty YouTuber Nikkie de Jager spoke about her negative appearance as a guest on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show." In July of that year, a BuzzFeed News report was published containing allegations from former employees of a toxic work culture on DeGeneres' talk show. Ultimately, DeGeneres said, her "be kind" mantra on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" put her in a box. "Ellen DeGeneres: For Your Approval" is now streaming on Netflix.

"I was sort of raised that you do a hard day's work and you're honest, and things will work out for you — it's a two-way street between you and your employer," he says. After publishing the article about Gen Z's predisposition to take time away, I got a lot of feedback from older generations. Some of it was predictable "the kids these days" complaints lamenting that nobody wants to work nowadays, that work ethic has disappeared, etc. "When you work for yourself, you're working for one of the biggest jerks you've ever worked for," he said. None of the boomers I talked to was in favor of people calling out of work willy-nilly.

Trump allies have pushed for a special legislative session intended for the Republican-controlled legislature to change Nebraska to a winner-take-all system instead of awarding electoral votes by congressional district. The developments appear to cap months of deliberations over whether Nebraska lawmakers could change the way the state apportions its electoral votes in a way that would benefit Trump. Nebraska allocates its electoral votes by congressional district, and the swing district around Omaha has twice gone to Democrats in recent years, giving them one electoral vote from an otherwise ruby-red state. But if lawmakers changed that to a winner-take-all model, Trump would be all but certain to win all of Nebraska's electoral votes. Maine is the only other state that does not have a winner-take-all system for electoral votes.

A new ETF uses AI to emulate Warren Buffett's investment style

Investment startup Intelligent Alpha is working on launching the Intelligent Omaha ETF , with the ticker AIWB, that relies on AI to emulate the Berkshire Hathaway CEO's investment philosophy and create a portfolio of 25-30 stocks that it thinks Buffett might buy. It remains to be seen how deeply AI could understand Buffett's unique investing style that has evolved significantly over seven decades. All about AI Intelligent Alpha has been testing its Buffett strategy for six months and the portfolio AI puts together would overlap Berkshire's by anywhere between 30 to 60%. "The vision for Intelligent Alpha is to build the AI-powered BlackRock," Clinton said. "There are two big pillars, serving retail investors [through Registered Investment Advisors], and then there's serving institutional investors."

Childcare is often top of mind for parents — and it might also be a deciding factor at the ballot box. Many parents just don't have the luxury of relying on family to provide childcare, Drew said, and they shouldn't have to. Schell said that grandparents have actually stepped in to help provide childcare for some parents, especially during the pandemic. Bock said that it would be helpful to find a way to pay grandparents for childcare responsibilities. The Georgia state election board on Friday voted 3-2 to require counties to hand-count ballots cast on Election Day, a move that could drastically lengthen the amount of time to tally results in a critical battleground state. Number one is the actual counting of the number of ballots that you have at the precinct. Georgia's rule only requires election workers to count the number of ballots — not every votes on the ballot — but election officials are still worried about the impact. In August, the same Georgia board members passed other new rules that would allow county election board members to conduct “reasonable” inquiries before they certify results. Speaking of the trio of board members who voted for them at a rally last month, Trump said, “They’re on fire.

A Republican-controlled chamber could thwart Harris’ nominees to fill out her administration and the courts, along with her legislative agenda. Top Senate Republicans told NBC News she would need their sign-off to secure votes on any judicial nominees, including for the Supreme Court. The prospect of a split Congress looms over a possible Harris win even if Democrats have a strong year and sweep every swing state. And if it’s a GOP-led Senate, Republicans would control a floor vote. Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, would have seniority to be the next Judiciary Committee chair and said he intends to claim the position if Republicans win control.

WASHINGTON — As president, Donald Trump slashed a lucrative tax break enjoyed by coastal donors and suburban swing-state voters. What shifted more than the economy is Trump's needs, said Caroline Bruckner, managing director of American University's Kogod Tax Policy Center. The reversal is one of a flurry of freebies that Trump and his rival, Vice President Kamala Harris, are offering voters in the stretch run before Election Day. Trump’s proposal to repeal the SALT cap, which is set to expire next year if Congress takes no action, would reduce federal revenue by $1.2 trillion over a decade, according to CRFB’s estimate. But many voters in those counties would stand to benefit considerably from a repeal of the SALT cap.

Harris responded that she’d cap child care costs at 7% of working families’ income, following the Biden administration playbook that she was heavily involved in writing. “My plan is that no family, no working family, should pay more than 7% of their household income in child care,” Harris said Tuesday at a National Association of Black Journalists event, noting that steep child care expenses make it difficult for many parents to work. Child care advocates were buoyed by Harris’ answer on Tuesday. Parents with two kids in a child care center paid on average at least twice as much for that care as they did for the typical rent in 11 states and the District of Columbia in 2023, according to a Child Care Aware of America report released in May. That equates to 10% of median household income for a married couple with children and 32% of median income for a single parent with children, Child Care Aware found.
