REUTERS/Matthias Rietschel/DETROIT, Jan 9 (Reuters) - Volkswagen’s software division, CARIAD, has emerged from a review ordered by VW's new chief executive with a plan to work toward a unified software architecture for future vehicles one jump at a time, according to CARIAD chief Dirk Hilgenberg. “I call our program 'triple jump',” Hilgenberg told Reuters at the CES technology trade show in Las Vegas. “You do one jump after another.”The next key step will be the launch of the Porsche Macan SUV in 2024, which will have VW’s new premium software architecture. Volkswagen's current status is in-between: Software now deployed allows its "ID" electric vehicles to be updated remotely, with a fix for what Hilgenberg called “teething problems”.

Las Vegas, Jan 6 (Reuters) - Farm equipment took the keynote spotlight at the CES technology trade show in Las Vegas, as "human security for all" became the first theme in its 56-year history. "Technology allows farmers to create more with less," May told an audience of 2,000 at one of the world's largest tech events, organized by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA). The trade group is partnering with the World Academy of Art and Science and the United Nations Trust Fund for Human Security to encourage the tech industry to help tackle the world's most pressing problems. The CES sessions are the first phase of the trade group's "rolling thunder" campaign to raise awareness across all sectors of the economy, said Garry Jacobs, executive chairman of the Human Security For All campaign. A year ago, investors were wildly optimistic about the potential of automotive technologies such as automated driving. They now risk swinging to the opposite extreme. Anyone looking for an idea of the cars that might be on sale in five years’ time likely found the news from this year’s CES in Las Vegas more muted than usual. Stellantis showed off new concept electric vehicles on Thursday, including a highly anticipated Ram pickup truck, but in reality it is playing catch-up with peers such as Ford and General Motors . Sony unveiled a brand for its new automotive joint venture with Honda , Afeela, but didn’t give many details of the much-hyped EV they expect to start selling in North America in 2026.
LAS VEGAS—The smartphone revolution of the past decade, which reduced the cost of super-efficient processors and tiny cameras, is now enabling innovators to create subtler, more effective tools to assist people with disabilities. Accessibility is among the consumer trends in focus in Las Vegas this week at CES, a global technology bazaar where companies offer clues about what’s coming in the year ahead and beyond.
Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) and EV startup Rivian (RIVN.O) also have announced plans to use LFP batteries. LFP batteries can be produced at lower cost, but deliver less range than comparable nickel-cobalt EV batteries. LFP batteries made in China can have a 20% cost advantage over nickel cobalt batteries. Battery makers and automakers are expanding EV battery capacity globally, and some industry analysts have questioned whether that could result in oversupply. Raising the capital required to fund investments in capacity and new chemistries is one of SK On's main challenges, Lee said.

Companies Stellantis NV FollowJan 5 (Reuters) - Chrysler parent Stellantis NV (STLA.MI) Chief Executive Officer Carlos Tavares said on Thursday that more auto plant closures will happen if high prices for electric vehicles cause vehicle markets to shrink from pre-pandemic levels. Automakers will risk losing pricing power as chip supplies recover, Tavares said at the CES technology trade show in Las Vegas. Stellantis said last month it would indefinitely idle an assembly plant in Belvidere, Illionois, citing high costs for electric vehicles. Tavares told reporters said similar actions "will happen everywhere as long as we see high inflation of variable costs." The company had flagged that increasing costs related to the electrification of the automotive market as the most impactful challenge affecting the auto industry.

Han Jong-hee, vice chairman and co-CEO of Samsung, speaking at the CES annual trade show in Las Vegas last year. SUWON, South Korea— Samsung Electronics Co.’s consumer gadgets chief expects demand for tech gadgets to remain sluggish through this year as high inflation, rising interest rates and a strong dollar weigh on sales. Han Jong-hee, vice chairman and co-CEO of the South Korean technology company, said he hoped the current industry downturn, which has pulled Samsung back from a run of record profits, will begin to improve in the second half of the year.
