The coordinated rail attacks that disrupted train travel in France on three high-speed lines Friday morning occurred despite intensive security precautions put into effect leading up to the Olympics, which officially begin Friday night. The dragnet yielded some results. In central France, a man of Chechen origin was charged in May with the planning of an attack outside an Olympic soccer match in Saint-Étienne. Another man, a neo-Nazi sympathizer living in the Alsace region, was sentenced to two years in prison for publishing an explosives recipe online and for making threats. This week, a 40-year-old Russian man was charged with working at the behest of a foreign power to “provoke hostilities” in France intending to destabilize the Olympic Games.

Before dawn on the day of the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics, arsonists on Friday sabotaged three critical high-speed rail lines, stranding thousands of travelers, heightening security fears and blighting what President Emmanuel Macron hoped to be a moment of national glory. Around 4 a.m., the arsonists cut through and burned cables used for signaling and security near three rail divides, the French authorities said. The carefully placed strikes snarled end-of-week travel plans for more than a million people, including Parisians leaving for vacation and international travelers en route to the opening ceremony of the Games. Parts of the prized rail system came to a standstill. The Paris prosecutor’s office, which handles major organized crime cases, said it had opened an investigation into what it called criminal vandalism and criminal conspiracy.

Trees are sucking up just as much, if not more, methane than soil does — the only other known natural sink on Earth. "We've been undervaluing trees for their climate benefits," Vincent Gauci, a professor at the University of Birmingham and the lead author of the study, told Business Insider. Both natural and human-made methane emissions from wetlands, cows, landfills, and burning fossil fuels are on the rise. In a 2017 study, they found that trees in Amazon floodplains emitted more methane than they absorbed. Satellites detect lower methane emissions than what scientists have found on the ground, implying that such "bottom-up" studies either overestimated methane emissions or missed a sink.

President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump couldn't be farther apart when it comes to climate action. Trump and his pick for vice president, Sen. JD Vance of Ohio, are both climate deniers. By contrast, the Democrats unveiled a platform that said it would build on the Biden administration's unprecedented spending on renewable energy and the green workforce while cracking down on the oil-and-gas industry. The center conducted the survey with the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication. The majority of Americans support climate actionMaibach said the shift among Republicans shouldn't distract from the fact that the majority of Americans support many of Biden's climate policies.

Ruth Westheimer, the psychologist known as Dr. Ruth, died on Friday at 96 after a long career as America’s best-known (and, arguably, least likely) sex therapist. For decades, she offered frank sex advice, often with her distinct giggle, always with an abiding emphasis on the idea that sex should be a source of joy, not shame. Millions of people tuned into her radio shows, watched her television appearances and gobbled up her books and interviews, reassured by the warmth and directness with which she approached taboo topics. In her later years, Dr. Ruth turned her signature candor and humor to the continuing loneliness crisis. Now, The New York Times is looking to hear from those who benefited from her life’s work: What did Dr. Ruth teach you about sex, love or human connection?

CNN —A West African court has found the Nigerian government guilty of human rights abuses during its suppression of the 2020 #EndSARS protests against alleged police brutality. Around two weeks into the 2020 protests, Nigeria’s security forces opened fire on young people demonstrating peacefully at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos, killing and wounding several people. Their lawyer, Bolaji Gabari, described the verdict as “a significant victory for the #EndSARS movement.”CNN has reached out to the Nigerian government for comment. But the marches morphed into protests campaigning for police reform and ending bad governance in the oil-rich country. The Judicial Panel of Inquiry and Restitution at the Lagos Court of Arbitration, a government-appointed panel, determined that the incident at the Lekki Toll Gate could be considered a “massacre” after a yearlong investigation.
