MADRID (Reuters) - Spain's acting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez will seek to clinch a new term in a parliamentary vote on Thursday, the lower house speaker Francina Armengol said on Monday. The vote will follow a parliamentary debate scheduled to start at noon local time (1100 GMT) on Wednesday, she told reporters. Sanchez looks assured of winning a new term with an absolute majority of the 350-member assembly. The prospect of the amnesty has brought thousands of opponents to the streets over the past week. After an inconclusive election on July 23, Sanchez's Socialist Party spent weeks negotiating with smaller parties, most of which had supported him in 2020 for his previous term.

Strong pay growth in UK spreads to public sector, survey shows
  + stars: | 2023-11-13 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
REUTERS/Afolabi Sotunde/file photo Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Nov 13 (Reuters) - Strong pay growth in Britain's private sector will be matched in the public sector in the year ahead, according to a survey which showed no sign of an easing of inflationary heat in the jobs market. The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) said employers in the private and public sectors both planned 5% pay rises, meaning public workers were on course for their biggest pay rise since CIPD began its surveys in 2012. The CIPD survey showed 51% of public-sector employers reported hard-to-fill vacancies compared to 38% of private-sector employers. "There remains strong demand for people, particularly in the public sector. It’s no surprise therefore that employers are expecting pay increases to match that of the private sector to remain competitive."

Former President Trump is working to ramp up his support among energy executives, WaPo reported. Support from oil and gas executives would be crucial to his 2024 reelection campaign. Harold Hamm, the billionaire founder and chairman of Continental Resources, for instance, told Trump during a phone conversation earlier this year that he should end his presidential bid, per The Financial Times. "Trump was good on energy, and I think energy policy under Trump would be fine," Eberhart, the DeSantis supporter, told The Post. The U.K. economy flatlined in the third quarter, initial figures showed Friday. Services sector output dropped 0.1% on the quarter, but the decline was offset by a 0.1% increase in construction performance, while the production sector flatlined. U.K. Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt said high inflation remains the "single greatest barrier to economic growth" in the country, with the consumer price index remaining at 6.7% year-on-year in September. While somehow avoiding a recession this year, today's no growth reading means the UK economy is flatlining with only 0.2% economic growth in the last six months." As the Bank of England stated earlier this month that more than half of the impact of higher interest rates on the level of GDP is still to come through, the U.K. economy faces growing headwinds as we approach 2024."

"We have managed to secure a majority that will make possible the investiture of Pedro Sanchez," acting minister for parliamentary relations Felix Bolanos said in an interview with SER radio station. Opinion polls have painted a picture of a country divided over the question of amnesty, even within the ranks of the Socialist Party. With Junts and PNV and the national and regional left-wing parties, Sanchez would win an absolute majority of 178 out of 350 lawmakers. Later on Friday, the Socialist Party added one vote more to its wide coalition after Canary Islands' regionalist party Coalicion Canaria also agreed to back Sanchez. Bolanos said the Catalan amnesty law would help ease tension in Catalonia as it would free school directors, firefighters and other civil servants who helped organise an illegal referendum on the region's independence in 2017 from legal proceedings.

REUTERS/Hannah McKay/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Nov 9 (Reuters) - Britain's Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) has forecast imposing a levy of 415 million pounds ($510 million) against UK financial firms to fund 2024/25 claims for redress from customers suffering poor advice and insurance provider failures. This indicative figure is higher than for 2023/24, primarily due to larger surpluses that were carried over from the 2022/23 financial year which reduced the 2023/24 levy to 270 million pounds, the FSCS said. The levy is likely to include cover on self-invested personal pension (SIPP) operator failure claims and pay-outs for insurance firm failures that occurred in previous financial years, it added. "FSCS directly contributes to trust and stability in our financial services system and makes a genuine difference to consumers' lives," Martyn Beauchamp, Interim Chief Executive of FSCS said in a statement. Most of our compensation continues to be paid out for poor financial advice and for legacy insurance provider failures - both of which include some of the most complex defaults and claims we handle," he added.

LONDON, Nov 9 (Reuters) - Shell (SHEL.L) is suing Greenpeace for $2.1 million in damages after the environmental group's activists boarded the company's oil production vessel in transit at sea this year, according to Greenpeace and a document seen by Reuters. Greenpeace activists boarded the vessel in January near the Canary Islands off the Atlantic coast of northern Africa to protest oil drilling and travelled on it as far as Norway. Boarding a moving vessel at sea was "unlawful and extremely dangerous," a Shell spokesperson said. Four Greenpeace activists used ropes to hoist themselves onto the vessel from inflatable boats that chased the ship at high speed. Protests at sea against oil, gas or mining infrastructure have long been part of Greenpeace's operations.

Everything went to plan until day 10 – November 2 – when the ship was en route to Gran Canaria, as storms approached. The ship remained safe at all times, but due to the impact of the storm some guests sustained injuries. It was last tracked off the coast of southern England, having departed Portsmouth for Lisbon, according to tracking website Vesselfinder. The route will take the ship through the Bay of Biscay again – hopefully with a smoother crossing this time.

Canary Wharf may yet avoid once-a-decade upheaval

LONDON, Nov 6 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Canary Wharf tends to have a new owner every decade. A recent 300 million pound equity injection implies they will buck the trend. Brookfield and the QIA, which own the estate’s developer Canary Wharf Group through a 50-50 partnership, ostensibly look to be backing a losing horse. Factoring in all its assets on the Canary Wharf estate, Brookfield as of September valued it all at $6.1 billion, or 5 billion pounds – over 2 billion pounds more than what the duo put in eight years ago. Canary Wharf could be owned by highly leveraged, shallow-pocketed types.

MADRID (Reuters) - Nearly 32,000 migrants have reached Spain's Canary Islands on fragile boats from west Africa this year, passing a previous record posted in 2006, regional authorities said on Sunday. So far this year, 31,933 people have reached the islands, compared with the 2006 small boats crisis when 31,678 people made it to the Canaries, regional authorities told Reuters. Fernando Clavijo, the Canary Islands regional chief, said the figures showed the scale of the humanitarian crisis faced by the islands and called for more help from the Spanish government and the European Union. Its seven islands have become the main destination for migrants from Senegal and other African countries trying to reach Spain, fleeing conflict or seeking a better life. The Spanish government said it would create additional emergency accommodation for some 3,000 migrants in military barracks, hotels and hostels.

CNN —More than 700 migrants traveling on four different boats were rescued near the shores of Spain’s Canary Islands, Spanish officials said Saturday. Some 247 people were aboard one boat, 238 on another, and 254 on the other two, according to a post on “X,” formerly Twitter, by the Canary Islands’ official emergency services account on Saturday. Of those aboard, two people were dead when found and two others died in a hospital, while 12 others are being treated in hospitals, officials said. On Thursday, Spain’s Interior Ministry said that 30,075 migrants had arrived to the Canary Islands by water from January 1 to October 31, more than double the number who arrived over the same period in 2022. While the anticipated robust growth pace notched last quarter is probably not sustainable, it would demonstrate the economy's resilience despite aggressive interest rate hikes from the Federal Reserve. According to a Reuters survey of economists, GDP likely increased at a 4.3% annualized rate last quarter, which would be the fastest since the fourth quarter of 2021. Others are not too concerned, noting the labor market continues to churn out jobs at a solid clip. Growth last quarter was also seen lifted by a smaller trade deficit, thanks to strong exports and increased inventory investment. But the labor dispute, which is costing auto makers millions of dollars per week, could weigh on growth in the fourth quarter.

Spain to create emergency accommodation for 3,000 migrants

REUTERS/Borja Suarez/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsMADRID, Oct 26 (Reuters) - Spain said on Thursday it would create additional emergency accommodation for 3,000 undocumented migrants in military barracks, hotels and hostels amid a 55% jump in arrivals by sea this year, which has triggered political tension. Escriva declined to disclose how many additional beds will be created, but a ministry source told Reuters it would be around 3,000 in total. But this time the central government's approach has been to expand emergency accommodations across the country, hoping to ease pressure on the Canaries. Following police screenings, migrants will be placed in the military barracks, hotels, hostels and other types of accommodations on a voluntary basis, the ministry source said. Escriva argued the situation was well-handled and manageable, and said some conservative politicians were whipping up what he called xenophobic rhetoric.

LONDON — Barclays on Tuesday reported a net profit of £1.27 billion ($1.56 billion) for the third quarter, slightly ahead of expectations as strong results in its consumer and credit card businesses compensated for weakening investment bank revenues. Venkatakrishnan said the bank "continued to manage credit well, remained disciplined on costs and maintained a strong capital position" against a "mixed market backdrop." Barclays' corporate and investment bank (CIB) saw income decrease by 6% to £3.1 billion, with the bank citing reduced client activity in global markets and investment banking fees. The bank did not announce any new returns of capital to shareholders after July's £750 million share buyback announcement. The cost-income ratio in the third quarter was 63%, but the bank has set a medium-term target of below 60%.

Data and analytics, which now make up the bulk of LSEG income, was up 7.2% year on year at 1.29 billion pounds ($1.57 billion) on improving sales, rising retention of existing customers and a higher annual price increase, LSEG said. Organic ASV growth remains broadly around the level seen in the first and second quarters, LSEG said, adding that all 2023 guidance is reiterated, including EBITDA margin and capital expenditure. JPMorgan Cazenove analysts said third-quarter gross profit was in line with company-compiled consensus, but "most importantly" organic ASV growth recovered after dipping to 6.9% in the second quarter.
