San Francisco CNN —Philip G. Zimbardo, the psychologist behind the controversial “Stanford Prison Experiment” that was intended to examine the psychological experiences of imprisonment, has died. Stanford University announced Friday that Zimbardo died Oct. 14 at his home in San Francisco. In the 1971 prison study, Zimbardo and a team of graduate students recruited college-aged males to spend two weeks in a mock prison in the basement of a building on the Stanford campus. The experiment is now used in psychology classes to study the psychology of evil and the ethics of psychological research with human subjects, Stanford said. Zimbardo is survived by his wife, Christina Maslach Zimbardo, three children and four grandchildren.

Several University of Alabama students were charged in alleged fraternity hazing incidents after a pledge said he was shoved, stepped on, and had things thrown at him. Court documents filed Wednesday state that videos from the TV room and band room captured the alleged hazing. Molineaux and another fraternity member are alleged to have "shoved and struck one of the pledges," the filing says. The University of Alabama said hazing is strictly prohibited and an investigation led to the campus police department serving warrants against several members. "Hazing violates University policy, the Code of Student Conduct, and the law, and it is a matter that the University takes seriously," the school said in a statement.

The Arizona Proving Grounds covers 4,000 acres between Phoenix and Las Vegas in Yucca, Arizona. As of July 2019, the operations employed 69 people, including workers represented by a local chapter of the UAW, according to the automaker. Stellantis plans to use a proving grounds in Arizona owned by Toyota Motor beginning next year, according to two people familiar with the decision. A Georgia grand jury indicted a teenage boy and his father on dozens of charges, including murder, in connection with a mass shooting last month that killed four people at Apalachee High School, officials said Thursday. The gunman who shot a longtime Santa Monica College employee is dead following a pursuit that ended in a standoff in El Segundo, according to the Santa Monica Police Department. Police say 39-year-old Davon Durell Dean, a Santa Monica College employee, shot his coworker Monday night on campus. At about 3 p.m. Tuesday, the suspect’s car was located in El Segundo. As a result of the standoff, access to Aviation Boulevard between 124th Street and El Segundo Boulevard was closed. In wake of the on-campus shooting, Santa Monica College said counseling and mental/emotional support services would be provided to students and faculty who have been impacted.

A Hamilton College student has been charged with posting antisemitic remarks on campus, authorities said Monday. New York State Police’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation responded to the private college located in upstate New York on Friday after receiving “a report of antisemitic remarks being posted on art canvases on campus,” police said in a news release. Brenden was located in his dorm room on Saturday and agreed to speak with state police during which he “ultimately admitted to posting the remarks,” officials said. Authorities said Hamilton College has suspended Brenden from campus pending a hearing for his dismissal from the school. Officials said “there remains no threat against students or faculty at Hamilton College.”NBC News has reached out to state police and Hamilton College for further comment.

Google said Monday that it will purchase power from small modular reactor developer Kairos Power, as tech companies increasingly turn to nuclear power as a way to fulfill the growing energy demands from data centers. Monday's announcement is another example of the growing partnership between tech companies and nuclear power. Data centers need 24/7 reliable power, and right now nuclear is the only source of emissions-free baseload power. Many hyperscalers have ambitious emissions-reduction targets, which is why they're turning to nuclear power. Constellation Energy is restarting Three Mile Island to power Microsoft data centers, while Amazon bought a data center from Talen Energy that's powered by the Susquehanna nuclear power plant.
