Money from programs like Social Security accounted for 18% of total personal income in 2022. A growing share of income in most US counties is coming from social safety net programs like SNAP, Social Security, and Medicaid, per a report published in September by the research firm Economic Innovation Group. One in six people in 2022 were over the age of 65 — compared to one in 10 in 1970 — and just over half of the national transfer income flows from Medicare and Social Security. The report's findings come as Business Insider has spoken with many retirees — who are living solely on Social Security income because they don't have savings or retirement investments — who say they are struggling to afford basic necessities. "I don't want to be rich, I just need to be comfortable," a baby boomer living on $1,104 monthly in Social Security previously told BI.

After Republican President-elect Donald Trump’s dramatic performance with Latino voters, a coalition of Democratic-leaning Latino groups is grappling with the shift and trying to reconcile it with the policies they say many Hispanics support. Along with UnidosUS, Latino-focused advocacy groups such as Voto Latino, Somos Votantes, Hispanic Federation and La Brega y Fuerza Fund sponsored a poll of Latino voters. The coalition rejected national exit poll findings showing that Trump won the majority of Latino men — 55% — to Harris’ 43%. Edison Research, which conducts national exit polling for NBC News and other news organizations, surveyed 2,750 Latino voters nationally. Thirty-seven percent of male participants in exit polling identified as white, while 6% identified as Latino in the Latino groups’ poll.

Patterson refuses to sign this form and said she'll contest this charge that carries up a year behind bars. Then, less than six hours after giving birth, O’Neil was wheeled through the labor and delivery unit to go home. Racial disparities persist, she added; for Black people, the preterm birth rate is 1.5 times higher than the rate among all other babies. Many of the regions with high preterm birth rates are maternity care deserts, Williams said. The US cities with high preterm birth rates also are “areas where there are many chronic conditions and patients living with a greater number of things like hypertension, diabetes, obesity – those are all drivers of preterm birth as well,” Williams said. “Every pregnant woman who lives in a maternal health care desert should be provided with access to a health care app that is monitored by remote providers.

The recall last week of two Bay Area officials who both championed progressive crime policies reflects long-held frustrations around a previous increase in violence targeting the Asian American community, experts say. The vote is indicative of Asian Americans’ rightward shift toward tougher crime policies like much of the state, analysts say. From March 2020 to December 2021, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders across the country reported nearly 11,000 hate incidents, including verbal and physical abuse, being coughed at or spat on, and facing discrimination in the workplace. “And a lot of people say, ‘Oh, we’ve moved on from that era.’ I don’t think Asian Americans have,” said James Zarsadiaz, author of “Resisting Change in Suburbia,” whose research focuses on Asian American conservatism. In San Francisco, for example, officials received 60 reports of hate crimes against Asian Americans in 2021, compared with the nine in 2020.

The effect of pay transparency laws on states
  + stars: | 2024-11-13 | by ( Jeanne Sahadi | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
The net effect for employers and employeesWhile only a minority of states require employers to provide pay transparency, their laws are having a domino effect on employers across the United States. “The majority of top-performing organizations (57%) embrace pay transparency and share pay ranges even when not required by law,” Payscale’s report noted. How pay transparency is helping individualsWhile there are federal laws prohibiting wage discrimination based on gender and other protected classifications, most states also have their own pay equity laws on the books. Wieselthier considers pay transparency laws a subset of pay equity because they provide a tool people can use to ensure they’re being paid fairly. “The whole purpose of pay transparency laws is to empower the candidates to negotiate,” Seikaly said.

The decision would help Musk and his America PAC move for outright dismissal of the lawsuit. Elon Musk's controversial $1 million-a-day swing state sweepstakes was never a lottery, a Philadelphia judge said in a written decision explaining why he declined to shut the program down after a hearing last Monday. Lotteries require a prize, a payment for a chance to win that prize, and for winners to be chosen at random, the judge said.
