Opinion | The Marketing of a Massacre
  + stars: | 2023-10-19 | by ( Frank Bruni | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
We watched the marketing of a massacre. Much has been written and spoken about some progressive groups and many progressive students (and faculty members) at American colleges, who reacted to the hunting, the shooting, the slashing, the burning of all those people in Israel by blaming … Israel. As Ezekiel J. Emanuel wrote in Times Opinion just days ago: “It is possible to condemn the barbarism of Hamas and condemn the endless Israeli occupation of the West Bank. So, too, is it possible to condemn the treatment of women and the L.G.B.T.Q. Why should they be any different from the so-called adults in this country?

Yet there’s been an acute debate around this very question here in America in recent days. Most Americans assess this conflict the way they do many others: at arm’s-length and an ocean away. And they do so through the prism of their own sense of fairness and justice. It is a part of who they are and how they think. And it is with that compass that many of them evaluate the broader dispute over Israel’s control of the Palestinian territories and the immediate conflict between Israel and Hamas.

The megadonor revolt at the University of Pennsylvania is getting worse as the Israel-Hamas war intensifies. Penn isn't the only school facing backlash after the Hamas attacks; Harvard University and Cornell University have also drawn scrutiny. As the war with Israel intensifies in Gaza, UPenn's benefactors are slamming the school for its response and actions before and after Hamas' terrorist attacks in Israel. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe billionaire Ronald Lauder followed suit, threatening to stop donating to the university if it doesn't mount a stronger response to antisemitism. And at Cornell University, students are calling for a history professor to be fired after he described the Hamas attacks as "exhilarating" and "energizing."

But ethics classes alone are insufficient to help students develop a clear moral compass so that they can rise above ideological catchphrases and wrestle intelligently with moral dilemmas. Instead, colleges and universities need to be more self-critical and rethink what it means for students to be educated. At the same time, academia has become more hesitant: We often avoid challenging our students, avoid putting hard questions to them, avoid forcing them to articulate and justify their opinions. This flies in the face of what a “liberal education” should be. Liberal education should be built around honing critical thinking skills and moral and logical reasoning so students can emerge as engaged citizens.

For the first time in a long time, tech workers are in a funk. This rare combination of generous compensation and a reasonable work-life balance kept tech workers happier than employees in other industries. Economy wide, there were on average 6.6 front-line workers per manager in 2018 and 2019, but post-pandemic, the ratio dropped to 6 to 1. It's possible that as tech companies have grown into more complex organizations, more management layers are necessary. Fundamentally, it's about listening to and elevating the voices of front-line employees.

The average rate on the 30-year fixed mortgage rose to the highest level since 2000 last week, but rates on adjustable-rate mortgages fell. But the average contract interest rate for 5/1 ARMs decreased to 6.33% from 6.49%. ARMs usually offer much lower rates because they have shorter fixed terms. Applications for a mortgage to purchase a home rose 1% for the week and were 19% lower than the same week one year ago. "In this first two weeks of October, as anticipated, inventories have taken a jump, but then because interest rates have taken a jump too, we're seeing less buyers.

Hawley and Vance support striking auto workers, but they're not on the same page as union leadership. AdvertisementAdvertisementAs strikes at auto manufacturing plants continue across the country, some populist-minded Republicans are breaking from their party's long-standing orthodoxies and backing the United Auto Workers' demands. Last week, Fain even slammed Donald Trump as part of the "billionaire class" following the news that the former president would address union workers in Michigan this week. So far, the only company that has figured out how to squeeze consistent profits out of electric cars is Tesla, which does not use more union labor. The union is now aiming to rebuild its reputation and influence in automotive labor and the labor movement writ large.

PTSD is a disorder caused by very stressful events and can significantly disrupt patients' lives. While PTSD is commonly associated with combat, civilians are not immune to it. Psychoactive ingredients, whether derived from cannabis, LSD or magic mushrooms, have long captivated mental health researchers in their quest for treatments. MAPS, founded in 1986, said it hopes the MDMA-assisted therapy will be approved next year and inspire other researchers studying therapeutic psychedelics.

CNN —In a move surprising even for a mercurial figure like Vivek Ramaswamy, the millionaire businessman this past week took a backhanded swipe at fellow Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley. For many Indian Americans and many Anglo Indians like me, Ramaswamy’s line of attack might not seem particularly surprising. With his jab at Haley, Ramaswamy almost certainly was not looking to ingratiate himself with Indian Americans. And on the whole, surveys show that nearly seven in 10 Indian voters in the United States identify as Democrats or lean Democratic. This did Ramaswamy no favors with Indian voters, especially Indian women.

I‘m increasingly seeing this in my work as a therapist in New York City. It avoids the deeper question of desire, and desire is a compass. The promised image of goodness skirts pleasures that — for obscure reasons — you aren’t sure you can want. Unsettling desires challenge our perception of who we are and what life might look like. Importantly, you come to see that limits cannot be held or crossed under compulsion.

Some analysts warn that rising yields could push up borrowing costs, causing the economic slowdown investors are now betting against. The key question is how much further bear steepening the market needs to see for "investors to become nervous," he added. In 2018, for instance, the curve shifted to a bear-steepening dynamic as the economy appeared to hold up well despite the Fed's tightening. Risks remain, however, warned Jonathan Cohn, head of US Rates Desk Strategy at Nomura Securities International, including the pain for companies refinancing debt at higher rates and China's weakening growth. The South Korean Coast Guard has confirmed that on Aug. 16 it found a man stranded with a Jet Ski-type vehicle on a mud flat off the country’s west coast, near the city of Incheon. He had set off from the Shandong Peninsula with a helmet, a life jacket, a telescope and a compass, according to the Coast Guard. He also had five containers of fuel, which he’d tied to the watercraft and used to keep the tank filled during the 14-hour journey, the Coast Guard said. “He felt depressed living in China due to the autocracy and lack of freedom of speech,” said Mr. Ran, 36, who met Mr. Kwon on an online forum about Chinese history.

He used a jet ski and a compass to get to the South Korean city of Incheon, per AFP. "He refilled the petrol on the ride and dumped the empty barrels into the sea," said the Korea Coast Guard on Tuesday, according to AFP. Kwon is now considering whether to apply for refugee status in South Korea, which only grants asylum to only a limited number of refugees each year. "While his means of entry into South Korea in violation of the law was wrong, surveillance of the Chinese authorities and political persecution of Kwon since 2016 are behind his life-risking crossing into South Korea," Lee told the news agency. The Incheon Korea Coast Guard Station was unable to be reached for comment because it was outside of office hours.

Seoul, South Korea CNN —A jet ski rider detained by South Korea for allegedly entering the country illegally is a prominent Chinese dissident who rode hundreds of miles across the sea to escape from China, activists say. The man, who is in his 30s, was apprehended August 16 near Incheon, on South Korea’s west coast near to the capital Seoul, the Incheon Coast Guard said in a news release Sunday. He is suspected of traveling from China’s eastern Shandong province, which lies about 400 kilometers (250 miles) across the Yellow Sea from Incheon. Upon arrival in South Korea, he got stuck on the muddy shore and had to call an emergency line for help, the release said. Lee Dae-seon, an activist working with Dialogue China and based in South Korea, said Kwon had been sentenced to jail and released in March 2019.
