As a global leader in digital payments, Visa has 4.2 billion credit and payment cards in circulation across more than 200 countries. Through its advanced transaction processing network, VisaNet, the company facilitates payment authorization, clearing, and settlement, and it is one of the most remarkable and consistent growth stories around — along with fellow payment processing company Mastercard. The following chart illustrates its remarkably consistent growth since the pandemic plunge (which naturally suspended considerable economic activity). While a 30 P/E is higher than the market's, the S & P trades closer to 26 times earnings; Visa should trade at a premium. The ability for consumer spending growth to continue apace is limited, so presumably, topline growth will slow somewhat.

Wall Street has been lowering its third-quarter growth estimates for months now. That's not abnormal, however, as third-quarter growth estimates tend to decline in the preceding months. Nearly 10% of S & P 500 companies have already reported results, with more than 79% beating earnings estimates, according to FactSet. Analysts' estimates for earnings per share have been cut by 80.3% over the past three months and 85% over the past six months. Analysts have cut their earnings per share estimates on Tesla by 24.1% over the past three months and 30.8% over the past six months.

As industries increasingly rely on real-time AI models, AKAM's infrastructure offers both speed and security by processing data closer to users. Combined with the company's attractive valuation, it offers substantial upside potential, with the chart showing growing investor interest in its AI-driven opportunities. Trading at only 15 times forward earnings, it's a significant discount relative to its industry average of nearly 28. AI models distributed on AKAM's extensive edge computing network provide significant upside potential, especially as demand for low-latency AI solutions increases across various industries. The S & P 500 continues to make new highs, and volatility continues to decline. First, the S & P 500 has logged just two absolute 1% moves since Sept. 19, which is nearly a month's worth of trading. In fact, 114 S & P 500 stocks made new 52-week highs on Tuesday, which was the first time we've had over 100 since 7/16/24. With the day's opening and close both being higher and lower than the prior session's, this created a bearish engulfing pattern. The bottom line is that the S & P 500 and dozens of its holdings have built up substantial cushions by strongly coming back from the August lows.

Over the past month, the S & P 500 has climbed 3.2% to break above 5,800 for the first time. "Despite all the soft-landing and Fed rate cut optimism, the S & P 500 up almost 40% y/y has simply over-shot," he wrote in a note to clients. "S & P 500 over-valuation has been supported by (and fully reflects) the Fed likely cutting the real funds rate," he added. This summer, he said he expected the S & P 500 to fall to 5,000 by the fourth quarter. However, stocks don't usually climb in a straight line, and many of these names are showing signs of exhaustion after a significant rally. This time, I'm introducing a new indicator for my trade setup: the MACD (Moving Average Convergence Divergence). In the case of BABA, the blue line (the MACD line) is crossing below the yellow line (the signal line). The trade To capitalize on a pullback in BABA, I'm using a trade structure called a "bear put spread." For example, if BABA is trading at $102, I would buy a $103 put (higher strike) and sell a $101 put (lower strike) to complete the trade setup.

The AI trade is powering ahead as the markets are seeing a rotation back into the semiconductor, hardware and software companies that are driving the revolution. One industrial company on my radar — that I don't yet have a position in — is Vertiv (VRT) . The company provides liquid cooling systems for data centers powering AI. I know it's a wide zone, but consider the percentage gain this stock has experienced in the past 2 years. CNBC Pro then sorted for the names with the highest dividend yields: Zions had the highest dividend yield of the stocks on the screen at 3.47%. Howmet also produces parts used in gas turbines (power generation) and precision castings, fasteners, and other components for automotive applications. Over the past few years, Howmet has grown revenues, net income, and free cash flow considerably faster than the economy's overall growth. Buying shares of Nvidia or other semiconductor and Big Tech stocks is just one way to play the artificial intelligence theme. There's a cheaper way to play it, Sean Peche of Ranmore Fund Management told CNBC Pro Talks last week. "Most investors over the last couple of years have thought that the only way to play AI is to own Nvidia and a few of the other peers," the portfolio manager said. AI is going to help these banks, but investors are "not paying for" the AI factor given that these stocks are trading at only six times earnings, he pointed out. Shares of Nvidia are trading at around 57 times earnings.

The movement in the patience-to-impatience investor pendulum for Elon Musk (and Tesla) has fully swung to impatience. I believe this initial negative reaction (down nearly 10%) is presenting a discount in Tesla (TSLA) shares and I want to use options to create short-term income while I wait for a short-term bounce. Tesla plans to introduce full self-driving (FSD) capabilities in California and Texas as early as Q1 2025, pending regulatory approvals. The trade Tesla is a stock that has become more intensely emotional as Musk is in the news daily. I want to capture the emotion in today's tape by utilizing a Risk Reversal options strategy which takes the premium I am collecting from the put option I am selling to finance and buy the call option.

Using options to generate income from a boring stock

Options traders like to say that there are strategies that can profit if a stock rises, falls, or goes nowhere at all. Crown Holdings (CCK) , which reports earnings next week, may have the set-up we're looking for. Demand for sustainable and recyclable packaging drives growth in the beverage can market, a significant segment for Crown Holdings. In the street's view, Crown Holdings is a reasonable business at a reasonable valuation (19 price-earnings ratio). This involves purchasing the lower implied volatility, longer-dated options, and selling nearer-dated options to capitalize on accelerated decay ("theta").
