CNN —A third farmworker has tested positive for bird flu in California, according to the state’s health department. Like the first two human cases in California, this third case is a farmworker who was in contact with sick dairy cattle. The CDC’s Principal Deputy Director, Dr. Nirav Shah, said in a news briefing on Friday that these cases were not a surprise. The California Department of Food and Agriculture has been conducting bulk milk tank sampling in areas where herds test positive. The first infected herds in California were found in late August.

U.S. health officials are preparing to screen passengers flying in from Rwanda for symptoms of Marburg virus, a severe infection similar to Ebola. People infected by the virus can start showing symptoms two to 21 days after their exposure, according to the CDC. Marburg is a virus that causes hemorrhagic fevers and internal bleeding, much like Ebola. No Marburg cases have been detected in the U.S. As of Sunday, Rwandan health officials had reported 49 cases, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Also Monday, the CDC issued what’s known as a level 3 travel health notice, warning people against unnecessary travel to Rwanda.

CNN —Amid an outbreak of Marburg virus in Rwanda, travelers coming into the United States who have been in Rwanda in the previous 21 days will be screened starting next week, the US Department of Health and Human Services announced Monday. There are no confirmed cases of Marburg virus disease – a rare but deadly hemorrhagic disease similar to Ebola – outside Rwanda, and officials have said that the current risk to the US is low. The CDC is also issuing a Level 3 Travel Health Notice, recommending that people reconsider nonessential travel to Rwanda, and sending automated texts to air travelers arriving from Rwanda to share information and instructions. As of Monday, there have been 56 confirmed cases of Marburg in Rwanda, with 36 people in isolation and treatment, and 12 deaths, according to the Ministry of Health. Daniel Lubetzky says his days of choosing work over sleep are long gone, and he's more productive because of it. Lubetzky, the billionaire Kind Snacks founder and newest permanent investor judge on ABC's "Shark Tank," was once a major night owl — perhaps involuntarily, he says. "I have a little bit of an obsessive personality," Lubetzky, 56, tells CNBC Make It. "That's helped me get better quality sleep," Lubetzky says. "And the brain pain level is bad if I get less than six hours [of sleep per night]."

Instead, US officials now focus on testing the contents of Americans’ wastewater to keep tabs on the virus. To identify virus levels and larger trends, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention relies on a large network of sampling sites at wastewater treatment facilities across the country. Viral levels vary over time and by location. Samples are taken from sampling sites around the United States that meet criteria to sufficiently anonymize the data. Wastewater data also helps local public health agencies to track new Covid variants and other infectious diseases, such as RSV and mpox.

Chin-Hong said the variant is a so-called recombinant of two other strains — KS.1.1 and KP.3.3 — meaning that genetic information was exchanged between them to form a third strain, XEC, Chin-Hong said. Is the XEC variant more contagious? Chan School of Public Health, said there’s no evidence yet that the XEC variant is much more transmissible than what’s currently circulating. The variant is closely related to KP.2, the strain targeted by the updated vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna. Bright, however, cautioned that clinical data is ultimately needed to determine how well the updated vaccines work against the XEC variant.

Lung cancer is rare in people under 45, but more women who have never smoked are developing the disease. She was young, healthy, and never smoked so was shocked when she was diagnosed with lung cancer. Although CDC data suggests rates of cigarette smoking, which is the leading risk factor for lung cancer in the US, have declined significantly over the last few decades, rates of non-smokers getting lung cancer are rising. Doctors quickly identified she had stage four, non-small cell lung cancer, which had spread to her pelvis, right femur, and cervical spine. CNN —People in the United States can now order more free Covid-19 tests from the federal government as the country heads into respiratory virus season with high levels of the coronavirus already circulating. “Reopening this popular program is the latest step by the Biden-Harris Administration to ensure that over-the-counter COVID-19 tests are available to all who want them this fall and winter,” HHS Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response Dawn O’Connell said in a statement. More information about ordering these tests is available at ACL.gov/AccessibleTests. The CDC also recommends that everyone age 6 months or older receive an updated Covid-19 vaccine this season to stay up to date. The updated Covid-19 vaccines are available now at pharmacies across the US and can be received at the same time as the annual flu vaccine.
