For Lachlan Murdoch, this moment has been a long time coming. On Thursday, his father Rupert Murdoch announced that in November he'll step down as the head of his two media companies: News Corp. and Fox Corp. Lachlan will become the chair of News Corp. while remaining chief executive and chair at Fox Corp., the parent of Fox News Channel. In Murdoch World, as in the fictional world of the Roy family, seemingly sure things can go sideways in an instant, particularly when unexpected opportunities arise. Lachlan Murdoch has lived that first hand. Lachlan Murdoch has drawn criticism from media watchdogs for what many called Fox News' increasingly conspiratorial and misinformation-promoting broadcasts.

Last year, a Russian jet released a missile near a British Royal Air Force reconnaissance aircraft. But a new BBC report found that the pilot actually tried to shoot down the NATO aircraft but failed. The pilot of a Russian SU-27 fighter jet fired two missiles at a British RAF RC-135 Rivet Joint surveillance aircraft on September 29 last year. At the time, Russia claimed it was a "technical malfunction" — an explanation accepted by British Defence Secretary Ben Wallace. Since the incident, RAF flights have been escorted by Typhoon fighter jets armed with air-to-air missiles.

It’s true that the Ukrainian counteroffensive debuted with conspicuous setbacks and hasn’t advanced as much as hoped. Moreover, land seized by Russia earlier has been used to strike ever deeper into Ukraine, making restoring defensible borders an existential concern. But Kyiv got the ammunition needed to sustain the counteroffensive longer while awaiting expanded factory production of conventional shells in 2024. CNN —New audio has been released of Princess Diana talking about how Britain’s Prince Charles – now King Charles III – was disappointed that they were having a boy, not a girl, when Prince Harry was born. The late princess recorded a series of audio tapes in the 1990s and had them secretly delivered to author Andrew Morton before her death in a high-speed car crash in 1997. ABC’s Good Morning America got an exclusive listen to the tapes in which Diana says her husband wouldn’t even talk to her stepmother Raine Spencer. ‘Pain, Raine?’She recalled Spencer reacting by saying she had “no idea how much pain your mother put your father through.”The late Princess responded: ‘Pain, Raine? When asked if he would release more audio, Morton said, “There is global interest, but we’ll have to see what happens.”

Al-Fayed for decades insisted the pair were murdered, despite inquiries finding otherwise, and was scornful towards the British royal family in his later life. After 1997, when a car crash claimed the lives of his son and Diana, Al-Fayed would frequently sling insults at the British royal family and became persona non grata among parts of the country’s elite. Al-Fayed was questioned by police in 2008 in relation to a sex assault allegation that he denied, a Harrods spokesperson said at the time. He eventually sold the store to the Qatari royal family in 2010, for a reported $2.25 billion. Al-Fayed had six children, including Dodi and the environmentalist entrepreneur Omar Fayed.

Phonetic alphabets, also known as spelling alphabets, came to prominence on the global stage in the mid-20th century, as world wars made urgent the need for clear, quick and secretive communication among Allied forces. The NATO Alphabet we know today (which begins with Alfa, Bravo, Charlie) was adopted officially in 1956 by the International Civil Aviation Organization, after earlier iterations such as the Able Baker alphabet proved inadequate. In a version used briefly by the British Royal Army, the spelling alphabet begins with Ack, Beer, which is what I say when I realize I’ve shown up empty-handed to a party. The NATO alphabet remains ubiquitous in ceremony — it comes up often in The New York Times’s crossword entries — but in practice, it’s somewhat niche. When was the last time you clarified the letter “Y” by saying “Yankee” instead of something like “yellow” or “yes”?

LONDON — The amount of money given to the British royal family by the U.K. government is projected to "increase significantly" in the coming years, according to the latest review of the annual Sovereign Grant. Despite the percentage cut, an unexpected surge in profits means the royal family is poised to receive more money than in previous years. The portfolio is worth a total of £16 billion ($20.5 billion), according to the crown estate, and generated "substantial additional income" from the offshore wind facilities owned by the royal family. The sovereign grant, which is based on profits generated two years before the financial year in question, was worth £86.3 million this year — unchanged from the year before. At the new 12% formula, this means the monarchy could receive £124.8 million in 2025 to 2026 and £126 million the following year.

Andrew Milligan/Pool via REUTERSLONDON, July 20 (Reuters) - The British government said on Thursday it would cut the proportion of funds going to the royal family from the Crown Estate next year, after King Charles said he wanted bumper windfarm profits to go to the "wider public good". The Sovereign Grant, which last year was worth 86.3 million pounds ($111 million), is typically based on 15% of Crown Estate profits but has been temporarily increased to 25% to pay for extensive refurbishment work at Buckingham Palace. However, new deals for offshore wind farms struck in January are expected to see Crown Estate profits surge by 900 million pound a year, and Charles had indicated he wanted this extra money to go the wider good. On Thursday, the Treasury said the Sovereign Grant next year would be cut to 12% of Crown Estates' profits, meaning it will remain at 86.3 million pounds but will be 24 million pounds less than if the rate had not changed. LONDON, July 5 (Reuters) - Prince Harry on Wednesday fought to take his phone-hacking lawsuit against Rupert Murdoch's UK newspaper arm to trial, asking London's High Court to let him rely on an alleged "secret agreement" between Britain's royal family and the publisher. David Sherborne, representing Harry, argued there was clear evidence of an agreement between NGN and the royal family, which meant Harry was unable to bring his lawsuit earlier. Harry also said his attempts to progress his case against NGN, with the backing of the late Queen Elizabeth, were stonewalled by NGN and royal aides. Sherborne argued in court filings on Wednesday that NGN had not provided any evidence from Brooks and Thomson "despite their evidence having been identified as critical". He became the first senior British royal to appear in a witness box for more than 130 years when he gave evidence in his MGN lawsuit last month.

LONDON, June 29 (Reuters) - Soaring inflation has hit the finances of the British royals, pushing up expenditure, Buckingham Palace said on Thursday, as it revealed King Charles had ordered the heating in royal homes to be turned down to cut emissions. The report said 1.6 million pounds ($2 million) had been spent by the royals on the queen's funeral and related events. The British government said in May it had cost an estimated 162 million pounds overall, which includes the cost of policing and security. He said gas and heating emissions had fallen 19%, partly driven by the king having the thermostats turned down, and a 43% decrease in travel emissions. "The royals have long hidden their true cost, which we have worked out to be at least 345 million pounds.
