Burberry will use its British heritage appeal to win back customers by focusing on trench coats and scarves and be less ambitious with prices on bags and shoes, the loss-making luxury brand said in a revamp that sent its shares up sharply. “We took pricing too high across the board,” Schulman told investors and analysts, setting out his assessment of what went wrong at Burberry. Pricing strategy shiftSchulman told reporters Burberry would add more lower-priced “entry-level” products to its range as part of a pricing shift. But he said Burberry’s positioning would remain in luxury and there were no plans to make it an “accessible” luxury brand. Leather goods and shoes underperformed in the first half, Burberry said, while outerwear did better than average.

London CNN —King Charles III has marked his 76th birthday on Thursday by opening two food distribution hubs, as part of his Coronation Food Project that he launched a year ago in the hopes of bridging the gap between food poverty and food waste. Charles visited one of the new hubs in south London, which is hosting a “surplus food festival” where meals will be made using food that might otherwise have gone to waste. Since it was launched, the food project has worked with local charities FareShare and the Felix Project, and saved 940 tons of surplus food - the equivalent of 2.2 million meals. Charles speaks with staff at the new distribution center, designed to save and circulate surplus food and to support communities in need. As Israel faced a U.S. deadline to ramp up access to aid in Gaza on Tuesday, leading humanitarians were warning that only a fraction of the desperately needed help was reaching the Palestinian enclave. An average of just over 30 trucks a day have been let into Gaza in recent weeks, representing “just over six percent of the daily needs,” according to Philippe Lazzarini, commissioner-general of the United Nations agency assisting Palestinian refugees, UNRWA. “What is being allowed into Gaza is not enough,” he wrote in a post on X on Friday. Before Israel launched its offensive in Gaza, around 500 trucks entered the enclave each day, according to the British Red Cross. Lazzarini's warning came ahead of the deadline set by Washington for Israel to meet a host of requirements aimed at boosting aid into Gaza or face restrictions on U.S. military assistance, as required under U.S. law.

LONDON — Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, the spiritual leader of the global Anglican church, resigned Tuesday after an investigation found that he failed to promptly report serial physical and sexual abuse by a volunteer at Christian summer camps. Welby said in a statement that he was stepping down "in sorrow" and "having sought the gracious permission of His Majesty The King." In his resignation letter, Welby acknowledged “personal and institutional responsibility” for “wrongly” believing that there wasn’t a need to make a formal report to police on the case in 2013. The church should have “properly and effectively” reported Smyth to the relevant authorities, the report found. A petition calling for Welby's resignation, created by members of the national assembly of the Church of England, the General Synod, had reached over 13,000 signatures at the time of his announcement on Tuesday.

CNN —Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, the most senior leader in the Church of England, has resigned over his handling of a child abuse case, according to his official account. “Having sought the gracious permission of His Majesty The King, I have decided to resign as Archbishop of Canterbury,” Welby said in a statement on Tuesday. Pressure had been mounting on Welby in recent days, following an independent review into “sickening abuse” committed by John Smyth, a deceased British lawyer considered the worst serial abuser linked to the Church of England. London CNN —Shell is not obliged to dramatically reduce its planet-heating pollution by 2030, a Dutch appeals court ruled Tuesday, overturning a previous verdict that imposed steep carbon emissions reductions on the British oil and gas giant. Shell (SHEL) had appealed the previous ruling, handed down in 2021, which ordered the company to slash its CO2 emissions by 45% by 2030 from 2019 levels. That included emissions from its own operations and from the energy products it sells. As such, it dismissed the previous ruling. “At the same time, we see that this case has ensured that major polluters are not inviolable and has further fueled the debate about their responsibility in combating dangerous climate change.

Britain's Prime Minister Keir Starmer speaks at a press conference, during his visit to the European Commission headquarters on October 2, 2024 in Brussels, Belgium. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Britain would cut greenhouse gas emissions by 81% by 2035 as he committed the country to a more ambitious climate goal at the United Nations COP29 climate summit. The new goal is in line with a recommendation from a committee of climate advisers who said last month the target should exceed the current 78% cut to emissions, measured against 1990 levels. Starmer said the British public would not be burdened because of the new target, which excludes international aviation and shipping emissions. We're not going to start dictating to people what they do," he said.

A Dutch court on Tuesday ruled to dismiss a landmark climate ruling against Shell , after the oil giant was ordered to drastically reduce its global carbon emissions back in 2021. In May 2021, The Hague district court ruled that Shell must reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 45% from 2019 levels by 2030. Shell's lawyers said demands for companies to curb greenhouse gas emissions could not be made by courts, but only by governments, Reuters reported. The company also said the court ruling would force it to shrink its business without any benefit to the fight against climate change. The burning of coal, oil and gas is by far the largest contributor to the climate crisis, accounting for more than three-quarters of global greenhouse gas emissions.
