And as the mountain of debt keeps piling up, and the government’s budget deficit remains massive, some bond traders are now joining politicians in decrying the government’s ever-growing financial obligation. Those bond traders are seemingly up in arms over the government’s gaping budget deficit — something that occurs when the government’s spending outstrips revenues — which currently stands at roughly $67 billion so far for the current fiscal year. For the full 2023 budget year, the Congressional Budget Office estimated that the deficit stood at a staggering $1.5 trillion. How do we manage the budget deficit? Our interest rate team is looking at the 10-year (US Treasury) yield to be closer to 4% than 5% next year.

New York CNN —The US stock market has rebounded from its months-long rut. Stocks finished out their best month of the year on Thursday, breaking a three-month streak of declines for all the major indexes. “The only way I see a rally continuing is if the bond market behaves itself,” said Richard Steinberg, chief market strategist at The Colony Group. While those stocks have remained at the top of Wall Street’s scoreboard, the recent rally has encompassed a wider range of stocks. Long-neglected pockets of the stock market, from beaten-down financials to small-caps to cyclical stocks, have climbed higher in recent weeks.

“He is a straight talker and tells it like it is,” a 23-year-old Rotterdam waitress told The Guardian. Mr. Wilders has promised to bring down housing prices by building more apartments (as has virtually every other party) and to prioritize Dutch citizens for public housing. Mr. Wilders does not have a record of working well with others; coalitions typically require smaller parties to shave off their more extreme positions, which Mr. Wilders has in the past refused to do. His Party for Freedom hasn’t been in government since 2012 — and the head of the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy, Dilan Yesilgoz-Zegerius, announced Friday morning she would not join a cabinet with Mr. Wilders. “We have to be more forward-thinking and listen to people everywhere.”Perhaps there is hope yet for the polder model.

I dislike getting involved in debates on the stock market when I am enjoying an old-fashion rum punch at a beach bar in the Caribbean, but I couldn't resist interjecting. "We'll see how the coming slowdown plays out," he said, and turned back to his discussion. The coming slowdown? More may be coming: the last week of November tends to be the strongest week of the month, Ryan Detrick, chief market strategist at Carson Group, has noted. As for earnings, which are the lifeblood for the stock market, forward earnings estimates for the next 12 months stand at record highs.

The GMO US Quality ETF (QLTY) launched on November 12, and as its name implies, the fund seeks to offer investors exposure to so-called quality stocks through an actively managed approach. This story is available exclusively to Business Insider subscribers. "At GMO, internally we also talk about intrinsic value, which is adjusting for growth and quality," Hancock said. The aerospace business manufactures and re-services airplane engines, and the continued resurgence in global demand for travel following the pandemic bodes well for the business, Hancock said. While the timing of the ETF release is not related to Grantham's call, Hancock said quality stocks are typically more defensive in a recessionary environment.

New York CNN —For over a year, the red-hot housing market has been at the mercy of the Federal Reserve’s rate hikes, which have driven mortgage rates to sky-high levels. Mortgage rates have hovered above 7% since August, according to Freddie Mac data. Both those factors have helped create a scorching-hot housing market and a boom in homebuilder stocks, as Americans turned to building as a buying alternative. Moderating bond yields could change the narrative for the housing market. Tight supply and elevated mortgage rates this year made home purchases the least affordable they’ve been since 1984.

Activity picked up again this month, he said, as shoppers turned out for special promotions. Two-thirds of toys in its stores will be priced at less than $25, the company said. Target expects sales to continue falling in the final months of the year, subject to a “wide range” that reflects the uncertainty about holiday spending. The U.S. Commerce Department reported that retail sales nationwide nudged down 0.1 percent in October from the previous month, the first drop since March. The decline, which is not adjusted for inflation, was driven by weakness in big-ticket categories like furniture and cars, which may be weighed down by the higher interest rates consumers face when buying on credit.

Solar stocks could rebound in the second half of 2024 after taking a beating this year, though the industry's recovery depends largely on whether the Federal Reserve raises interest rates again. The rally comes as the residential solar industry looks toward the end of a rough year, with demand softening significantly as repeated rate hikes made installations unattractive for consumers. "The big headwind is interest rates," said Julien Dumoulin-Smith, a stock analyst who covers clean energy for Bank of America. Inventory problem The residential solar companies misread the market this year after a record 2022. The residential solar stocks will probably be broadly revisited on the buyside sometime around the spring of 2024, Blanchard said, though this also depends on what the Federal Reserve does with interest rates.

Washington, DC CNN —Americans cut their retail spending in October for the first time since March, with interest rates at a 22-year high. Retail sales, which are adjusted for seasonality but not inflation, fell 0.1% in October from the prior month, the Commerce Department reported Wednesday. October’s decline in retail spending is potentially an early sign of a slowing economy as US consumers get squeezed by higher borrowing costs and they continue to rack up credit card debt. Car sales fell 1.1% in October from September, while furniture sales declined 2% during the same period. Wednesday’s retail sales report bodes well for the Fed, since it shows spending isn’t reaccelerating or remaining stubbornly strong.

Profitable Klarna poses IPO valuation conundrum
  + stars: | 2023-11-09 | by ( Karen Kwok | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +4 min
Last year, Siemiatkowski raised money at a $6.7 billion equity value, or 85% below its 2021 price tag of $45.6 billion. The implied Klarna valuation, before netting out the company’s cash or debt, would be roughly $14 billion. It’s hard to see Klarna getting close to those multiples, if it’s valued like a bank, since the Swedish company is nowhere near as profitable. For Siemiatkowski, then, the key to gaining an IPO valuation uplift will be to convince investors that Klarna is a lender but not a bank. Klarna raised $800 million at a $6.7 billion valuation in July 2022.

REUTERS/Florence Lo/Illustration/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNov 1 (Reuters) - Shares of Advanced Micro Devices (AMD.O) jumped 8% on Wednesday, after an upbeat AI chip sales forecast signaled the company was making progress in its bid to catch up with market leader Nvidia (NVDA.O). The optimism over AI chip sales helped ease worries about a disappointing fourth-quarter forecast and put it on course for market value gains of nearly $13 billion, based on the $106.41 share price. CEO Lisa Su on Tuesday provided a 2024 sales forecast for the first time for the MI300 chips, designed to compete against the advanced H100 chips sold by Nvidia. That would make the MI300 the fastest product to ramp to $1 billion in sales in AMD's history. The CEO also said the MI300 chips had won commitments from "multiple, large hyperscale customers", a term that refers to large tech and cloud computing companies.
