With polling forecasting a close race in the U.S. presidential election , UBS is eyeing two baskets of stocks to prepare for either outcome. Overall, UBS said stocks within its Trump administration beneficiaries basket indicate a win for the former president next week. Here is a look at some of the stocks UBS has placed in each grouping. Also, a Trump administration could roll back some actions that were favorable to utilities with exposure to renewables. Other sectors that can benefit from a Harris win include homebuilding as well as child care and employment agencies, Garthwaite added.

It roughly doubled the standard deduction, adjusted the individual income tax brackets and lowered most of the rates. The legislation also applied a $10,000 cap on the state and local tax deduction, and it roughly doubled the estate tax exemption (it now sits at $13.61 million for an individual). Swiss banking titan UBS on Wednesday posted a large profit beat, after completing its first wave of client migrations following its integration of collapsed domestic rival Credit Suisse. Net profit attributable to shareholders came in at $1.43 billion, compared with a mean forecast of $667.5 million in a LSEG poll of analysts. UBS defends it is not "too big to fail." UBS still faces the lofty tasks of integrating its IT system with that of Credit Suisse, along with migrating clients — with the latter transition set to take around 18 months, Reuters reported earlier this month. The UBS results come after the profit beat of Germany's largest lender Deutsche Bank last Wednesday and join this week's spate of third-quarter reports from European lenders, including from BNP Paribas and Santander.

Popeyes and Subway recently launched their own takes on a ghost-pepper sandwich. I tried both and thought they were milder than other spicy sandwiches I've had. For the last two years, Burger King has sold a ghost-pepper Whopper and ghost-pepper chicken fries in time for Halloween. Starting in May 2023, Wendy's added its own ghost-pepper items to menus, including fries, chicken nuggets, and chicken sandwiches. Here's what I discovered when I tried the ghost-pepper sandwich from Popeyes and Subway.

Options traders are buckling down for outsized volatility around next week's election, according to Goldman Sachs. Two of the funds with the highest implied volatility are linked to China: the KraneShares CSI China Internet ETF (KWEB) and the iShares China Large-Cap ETF (FXI) . Crypto is already a volatile area, but Trump's embrace of the industry during his campaign could spark a significant reaction. The options market implies a move of more than 7% for ProShares Bitcoin ETF (BITO) , according to Goldman. A man looks at his smartphone as he walks past the People's Bank of China building on May 20, 2022 in Beijing. Despite taking effect on Monday, the PBOC did not mention the new tool in its open market operations statement. China's central bank launched a new lending tool on Monday to inject more liquidity into the market and support credit flow in the banking system ahead of the expiration of trillions of yuan in loans at the end of the year. Beijing is counting on massive financial stimulus announced in September to kick-start lending and investment, as a sharp property market downturn and frail consumer confidence weigh on investor confidence. "The central bank's choice to launch this new tool at this time is also expected to be a better hedge against the concentrated expiry of medium-term lending facility before the end of the year," the article added.

JPMorgan Chase has begun suing customers who allegedly stole thousands of dollars from ATMs by taking advantage of a technical glitch that allowed them to withdraw funds before a check bounced. A Houston case involves a man who owes JPMorgan $290,939.47 after an unidentified accomplice deposited a counterfeit $335,000 check at an ATM, according to the bank. “On August 29, 2024, a masked man deposited a check in Defendant’s Chase bank account in the amount of $335,000,” the bank said in the Texas filing. The infinite money glitch episode highlights the risk that social media can amplify vulnerabilities discovered at a financial institution. JPMorgan prioritized cases with large dollar amounts and indications of possible ties to organized crime, they said.

Customers who allegedly withdrew money fraudulently from Chase Bank ATMs using an illegal scheme that blew up on TikTok over the summer could soon have to cut hefty checks back to the bank. These people were able to withdraw funds by writing checks to themselves and immediately withdrawing funds before the checks bounced. Normally, the bank follows the industry standard of making a portion of any check available to customers before the funds clear. However, a temporary glitch allowed customers to withdraw more substantial amounts than typically allowed before a check clears. One case in Houston involves a “masked man” who allegedly deposited a $335,000 check to a defendant’s account.

CNN —When considering who is living paycheck to paycheck, households with an income of six-figures or more likely aren’t the first to come to mind. But, as it turns out, about a fifth of US households that earn more than $150,000 a year are in that situation. Across all income levels, households that earn less than $50,000 a year saw the highest proportion, around 35%, of people living paycheck to paycheck so far this year. But at higher income levels, the portion of households living paycheck to paycheck falls slowly. For instance, the share of households living paycheck to paycheck and earning between $50,000 and $75,000 is only a few percentage points higher than households earning more than $150,000.
