CNN —Millions of Americans will be tuning in to CNN and other networks on election night as returns roll in. They’ll be waiting to see who wins, something CNN will determine with a series of projections. I talked to Jennifer Agiesta, CNN’s director of polling and election analytics, about how CNN approaches the job of projecting a winner. But it tends to be after Election Day in a place like Pennsylvania. Is there a precedent in your career for a race that’s this close heading into Election Day?

Voting has now wrapped up in all seven swing states and most others. But no swing states have been called, and the race will hinge on their results. Bomb threats roiled polling places in swing states, including Georgia, Arizona and Michigan. Though the election is by no means over, Mr. Trump is showing strength, winning states like Texas and Florida easily. Democrats will have to run the tables in the Republican states of Ohio and Montana to maintain their one-seat control of the Senate.

Election officials across the US – particularly in swing states – have pledged to uphold the integrity of the vote and urged voters not to be misled by conspiracy theories. “Here in Georgia, it is easy to vote and hard to cheat,” Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger said Monday. He has alleged that voting by noncitizens is a widespread problem, that there’s no verification for overseas or military ballots, that election officials are using early voting to commit fraud and that massive swaths of mail-in ballots are illegitimate. However, supporters of Vice President Kamala Harris are far more confident, with 90% saying the election will be run smoothly, compared to 57% of Trump supporters. Harris supporters are also more confident than Trump supporters that it will be clear who won the election after all the votes are counted, by an 85% to 58% split.

Exit polls are conducted by Edison Research for the National Election Pool on behalf of a consortium of media companies: CNN, ABC, CBS and NBC. The polling locations were themselves selected through random sampling, meaning the resulting interviews should be representative of Election Day voters across the state or nationally. In addition to the national exit poll, there are also exit polls conducted in specific states with key, competitive presidential or down-ballot races. Even so, exit polls are still polls, with margins for error – which means they’re most useful when treated as estimates, rather than precise measurements. That’s particularly true for the earliest exit poll numbers, which won’t yet have been adjusted to match the final election results.

CNN —Republican Bernie Moreno will defeat Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown, CNN projects, a key pickup for the GOP in a state that’s been trending its way and putting the GOP one step closer to securing the Senate majority. Moreno emerged as the GOP nominee earlier this year after Democrats helped prop him up in the primary, believing he’d be the weakest opponent. Moreno’s GOP allies also tried hitting Brown over transgender athletes in an effort to cast the senator as too liberal for the state. (Brown and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee went up with a response ad on the issue that says the senator agrees with GOP Gov. But Moreno had significant outside firepower from GOP groups that helped boost his candidacy in the fall.

AdvertisementThis Election Day, minimum wage workers in four states are waiting to learn if they'll get a raise. The minimum wage in Massachusetts is $15 an hour, and the tipped minimum wage is $6.75. If Massachusetts' question 5 passes, the tipped wage would slowly increase to become level with the state minimum wage, reaching full parity by 2029. As it stands, Arizona employers are able to pay tipped workers up to $3 less than the standing minimum wage — as long as workers' tips still bring them to the minimum wage. Are you a worker earning at or near the minimum wage in your state?

My grandparents' vacation cabin in Lake Tahoe is the stuff of legend. My grandparents' little house in South Lake Tahoe, which they bought for $113,000 in 1984, quickly became a haven for my family. Framers of the Tahoe tax measure took inspiration from Berkeley, California, which adopted a vacancy tax this year. Since the city of South Lake Tahoe was incorporated in 1965, it's been populated by a healthy mix of year-round and seasonal residents. As of October 2024, the median sales price for homes in South Lake Tahoe was $750,000, according to Realtor.com.

CNN —While Florida generally makes it challenging for people in the state with felony convictions to regain their voting rights, former President Donald Trump will have no issue casting a ballot for himself today in Palm Beach. The first former US president convicted of a felony, Trump is scheduled to be sentenced on November 26. Under Florida law, if a voter has an out-of-state conviction, Florida will defer to that state’s laws for how a felon can regain his or her voting rights. For other Floridians with felony convictions, the rules are not so simple. A successful 2018 ballot initiative restoring voting rights to those who had completed the terms of their sentence was gutted by state Republican lawmakers.

An ‘embellished’ closing argumentTrump’s and Harris’ closing messages have seemingly been playing through a bullhorn on loop around Pennsylvania these final weeks. “No matter who wins, it will be narrow,” said Eugene DePasquale, the Democratic nominee for Pennsylvania attorney general. “If Harris wins, I think you’re going to say we offered a different vision for the country moving forward. But then there are voters who say former President Donald Trump lacks the character or demeanor a president should have. And some specifically panned the the racist and demeaning rhetoric from Trump allies at last week's rally at Madison Square Garden, criticizing them for alienating Americans instead of bringing them together. Other voters derisively mentioned Harris' laughter, called Trump more "transparent in what he's looking to do," and cited their support for Trump economic policies like tariffs and not taxing overtime pay. For the Harris supporters who briefly, seriously, considered Trump, the former president's tone and demeanor looms large. Again, a handful of voters brought up the rally comments about Puerto Ricans when voters describing something that made them view Trump more negatively.

“Too frequently, large grocery companies use their significant market power to hike prices for essential goods and take advantage of customers,” the letter said. Grocery prices shot up 20% between January 2021 and December 2022, causing some consumers to cut back on common purchases like red meat and eggs. But inflation is now virtually back to normal; since November 2023, grocery prices have been increasing by less than 2% on an annual basis. Challenges filed in Bucks County – which includes Philadelphia’s northeastern suburbs – were all filed by Pennsylvania state Sen. Jarrett Coleman, O’Malley said. Coleman also filed 519 challenges to overseas voters in Lehigh County, according to Tim Benyo, that county’s elections chief. Republicans and outside conservative groups have launched legal assaults against overseas ballots in multiple battleground states, including Pennsylvania, after Democrats touted efforts to turn out citizens who live abroad. Pennsylvania officials said that the lawsuit risked disenfranchising “tens of thousands” of overseas voters, including those in uniform. “In the absence of a registration requirement that applies to (overseas voters), election officials are required to fill their timely submitted absentee ballot requests,” Morley said.
