Goldman Sachs went big in the quarter, while rival Morgan Stanley trimmed its crypto holdings. In the period from March through June, Goldman Sachs made its debut in the crypto ETF market, purchasing $418 million worth of bitcoin funds. U.K. stocks are looking particularly attractive after a fresh bout of market volatility, according to the chief investment officer of financial firm Wren Sterling. It is in this context that Wren Sterling's Rory McPherson believes British stocks look "cheap" and "under-owned." When asked whether investors should consider U.K. stocks as part of a shift away from U.S. tech companies, McPherson replied, "Well, we think so. I mean you look at the market like the U.K., it's on 12 times earnings, its cheap, its under-owned. Analysts have recently turned bullish on U.K. stocks, which had been unpopular for years.

To start, the major funds that are marketed as "low volatility" or "minimum volatility" have been living up to the label. JPMorgan Asset Management has been a leader in this area, with Equity Premium Income ETF (JEPI) and Nasdaq Equity Premium Income ETF (JEPQ) now holding more than $48 billion in combined assets, according to FactSet. Another area is preferred stock funds. Up to this point, wealth management businesses have only facilitated trades if customers specifically requested exposure to these new spot crypto funds. Of Morgan Stanley's $1.5 trillion in assets under management, the bank disclosed in a May 13F filing that it held around $270 million in spot bitcoin ETFs. The expectation is that other wirehouses and asset managers, who have been on the sidelines performing in-house due diligence on spot crypto ETFs, might feel the pressure to soon follow Morgan Stanley's lead. The spot ether ETFs, which launched less than three weeks ago, have seen relatively tepid flows compared to the blockbuster launch of spot bitcoin ETFs in January. The bitcoin funds collectively hold $54.30 billion in assets under management, versus $7.25 billion across the spot ether funds.

Get out of cash — that's what many on Wall Street have been saying since expectations of rate cuts started rising earlier this year. They're now doubling down on that call, with the U.S. Federal Reserve signaling that it would finally cut rates in September. That would make cash rates less attractive than other parts of fixed income. "An easier tack from the central bank is likely to buoy risk markets like high yield fixed income and other spread product, including structured products, investment grade corporates and emerging market debt," said Robert Tipp, chief investment strategist and head of global bonds at PGIM Fixed Income. As investors search for income amid the market volatility, high-yield bonds are an attractive place to be, according to BlackRock's Rick Rieder. Meanwhile, credit spreads in corporate and high-yield bonds — which have been tight — are widening . What's different for crypto this time around from prior sell-offs is that many more investors are vulnerable due to the newly launched spot crypto ETFs. Bitcoin ETFs started trading in January, followed by ether funds last month. Across all spot bitcoin ETFs, there were net outflows of around $168 million. Monday's outflows are a fraction of the more than $50 billion market cap of the funds. Within spot ether ETFs, more than $48 million was added across all the funds.

Sweaty startups are blue-collar businesses, often in unglamorous or laborious fields like septic services, car washes, or lawn care. It's what your grandparents would've just called a small business, but it was a tongue-in-cheek answer to the Silicon Valley-style entrepreneurship being glorified in culture at that time. Still, some small businesses look to private equity to scale their businesses in different markets, even if that means overhauling operations in some cases. "Small businesses partner with private-equity firms because they provide access to capital and organizational support to help companies grow," Drew Maloney, the council's president and CEO, told BI. Morgan Stanley on Friday told its army of financial advisors that it will soon allow them to offer bitcoin ETFs to some clients, a first among major Wall Street banks, CNBC has learned. The firm's 15,000 or so financial advisors can solicit eligible clients to purchase shares of two exchange-traded bitcoin funds starting Wednesday, according to people with knowledge of the policy. Those funds are BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust and Fidelity's Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund, the people said. The move from Morgan Stanley, one of the world's largest wealth management firms, is the latest sign of the adoption of bitcoin by mainstream finance. In January, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission approved applications for 11 spot bitcoin ETFs, heralding the arrival of an investment vehicle for bitcoin that is easier to access, cheaper to own and more readily traded.

Cash has poured into money market funds since the Federal Reserve began its rate hiking cycle. Greg Davis, the firm's president and CIO, told CNBC's Bob Pisani that the small-cap rebound makes sense from a valuation standpoint and could keep going. The new CEO at Vanguard said Monday that the asset management giant could lean on artificial intelligence as it looks to improve its customer service experience. Vanguard, which built its reputation as a low-cost and investor-friendly brokerage firm, has seen criticism about its customer service in recent years. Difficulty in reaching a Vanguard representative on the phone is one common complaint seen in online forums. CEO Salim Ramji told CNBC's Bob Pisani on Monday that fixing the customer experience is "very high on my list of priorities" and that artificial intelligence looks like a promising avenue for help. The 3 Biggest Mistakes You Can Make With Your 401(k)
  + stars: | 2024-07-27 | by ( Diane Harris | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
In a surprising turn, given the usual grim reports about how little most Americans have saved for retirement, there’s been a spate of good news lately about 401(k) investors. Yes, the median shot up an impressive 29 percent in 2023, but the typical account was still worth just over $35,000 by year end, Vanguard reports. Other signs of stress: A record number of savers withdrew money early, and the percentage taking out loans rose too. All told, despite the surface optimism about retirement savings, six in 10 investors told BlackRock they still worry they’ll outlive their money. “The rising tide for retirement savers has not lifted all boats,” said Christine Benz, director of personal finance and retirement planning at Morningstar.
