The Board said it reviewed three cases involving the use of “From the River to the Sea” on Facebook and said that all appeals to remove the content were closed without human review. Those users then appealed to the Board, which exists for users to challenge Meta’s appeals process on Facebook, Instagram or Threads. In Germany, using the slogan “From the river to the sea” is now a criminal offense. The slogan used in the cases had wide reach through Meta’s platforms.

BERLIN — German prosecutors have issued a first arrest warrant in their investigation into the undersea explosions in 2022 that damaged the Nord Stream gas pipelines between Russia and Germany, according to a media report Wednesday. Swedish and Danish authorities closed their investigations in February, leaving the German prosecutors’ case as the sole probe. The blasts happened as Europe attempted to wean itself off Russian energy sources following the Kremlin’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. They ruptured the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, which was Russia’s main natural gas supply route to Germany until Russia cut off supplies at the end of August 2022. They also damaged the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, which never entered service because Germany suspended its certification process shortly before Russia invaded Ukraine in February of that year.

☆ German Court Fines Protester for ‘River to the Sea’ Chant

A German court ruled on Tuesday that a protester who shouted “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free” at a rally in Berlin in October had condoned criminal acts — the Hamas-led terrorist attacks on Israel — and gave her a fine of 600 euros, about $650. The slogan, which has radically different interpretations, was later banned in Germany, viewed as basically constituting a call for the elimination of Israel. The court case had been seen as a test of that law. The Israel-Hamas conflict has underlined the delicate balance in Germany between freedom of expression and the country’s relationship with Israel. One of the foundations of Germany since the Holocaust is support for Israel, a principle known as a Staatsräson, or “state reason.” Since Oct. 7, activism in Germany has been roiled by that tension, with cancellations, bans and fierce debates about what can and can’t be said about Israel and the war.

Signs of a slowing U.S. economy sowed panic among investors on Monday, with a sell-off in markets that began last week turning into a global rout. CNN —Russian-American journalist Alsu Kurmasheva said she’s “finally being treated as a human being” following her release from Russian detention in a historic prisoner exchange between Washington and the Kremlin last week. “I’ve been waking up from that nightmare,” Kurmasheva told CNN’s Jake Tapper on “The Lead” in her first television interview since her release. Kurmasheva rushed into the arms of her husband and daughters on the tarmac after greeting Vice President Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden. The US-backed Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty journalist had been detained in October 2023 and found guilty of spreading false information about the Russian army – charges her family and employer deny. Kurmasheva and her husband, Pavel Butorin, have two daughters, including one who turned 13 just minutes after reuniting with her mother.
