SYDNEY, Australia — The Pacific Island nation of Palau, important to the U.S. military amid tensions with China, and among a dozen allies of Taiwan, holds a national election for president on Tuesday. The U.S. military is constructing an over-the-horizon radar on Palau, scheduled to be completed in 2026. To counter the fall in Chinese tourist arrivals, Palau has opened direct flights to Japan and Australia, with support from those governments. Tax reform has emerged as an election issue, with Remengesau’s campaign arguing that big business is not paying enough, and pledging tax incentives for small businesses. During the election campaign, Remengesau said that Palau needs to “ensure that foreign influences do not overshadow our identity or compromise our independence.”His campaign did not respond to questions on which foreign influence he was referring to.

Oasis fans hit with a ‘landslide’ of ticket scams

London CNN —Hundreds of Oasis fans are looking back in anger after falling victim to a “landslide” of ticket selling scams. The bank said Oasis fans made up around 70% of all reported ticket fraud between August 27 and September 25. Fans scrambling for tickets have fumed about eye-watering prices and long waits online. Lloyds said its customers buying Oasis tickets on a major UK ticket selling site splashed out more compared with any other music concert over the past three years, parting with an average of £563 ($731) per debit card transaction during the first day of ticket sales in August. That’s higher than the average £342 ($444) spent on tickets for Taylor Swift’s UK tour last year, it noted.

We pay 37% taxes on our income up to $190,000 (Australian dollars) and 45% on anything over that. Housing prices are very high, but we don't pay property taxI paid over one million for a three-bedroom, two-bathroom house that's about 15 minutes outside the city. One benefit is that we don't pay property taxes. I figure if we stay here for five years, we'll break even on the amount we would have paid in property tax in the US. Plus, it's predictable — we own the home without worrying about rising property tax rates.

Australia's central bank keeps rates unchanged at 4.35%

Australia's central bank held its benchmark interest rate at 4.35% for the eighth meeting in a row, in line with expectations from economists polled by Reuters. The central bank expects that the headline rate will increase as these measures expire. The RBA instead pointed at the underlying inflation rate in Australia. The "trimmed mean" came in at 3.5% in the the September quarter, which was still "some way" from the 2.5% midpoint of the inflation target. Externally, the bank added that "heightened geopolitical risks and potential changes to trade and fiscal policies abroad add to this uncertainty."

The euro rose 0.4% to $1.0876 but faces resistance around $1.0905, while the dollar dipped 0.3% on the yen to 152.45 yen . Analysts believe Trump's policies on immigration, tax cuts and tariffs would put upward pressure on inflation, bond yields and the dollar, while Harris was seen as the continuity candidate. "A Harris win and a split Congress would likely result in 'Trump trades' quickly reversed and priced out," he added. Uncertainty over the outcome is one reason markets assume the Federal Reserve will choose to cut rates by a standard 25 basis points on Thursday, rather than repeat its outsized half-point easing. Futures imply a 99% chance of a quarter-point cut to 4.50%-4.75%, and an 83% probability of a similar-sized move in December.

"European travel companies can anticipate the possibility that Travel Tuesday will become a growing phenomenon in their region," McKinsey's report notes. Searches for "Cyber Monday" are far greater than "Travel Tuesday," but interest in the former is declining, it showed. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on Sunday that his government planned to cut student loans for around three million Australians by 20%, wiping off around 16 billion Australian dollars ($10 billion) in debts. The move builds on May's budget, which attacked cost of living pressures in Australia and gave debt relief for students, as well as more investment to make medicines cheaper, and a boost to a rent assistance program. "This will help everyone with a student debt right now, whilst we work hard to deliver a better deal for every student in the years ahead," Albanese said in a statement announcing the cut to student loans for tertiary education. The changes would mean the average graduate with a loan of AU$27,600 would have AU$5,520 wiped, the government said, adding that they would take effect from June 1, 2025.
