Former U.S. President Donald Trump attends a campaign event on April 02, 2024 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg urged a judge to reject an eleventh-hour bid by Donald Trump to delay his upcoming criminal hush money trial due to biased media coverage. Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, is also wrong to claim that the deluge of publicity means he can't get a fair jury, the D.A. Trump last month asked for a "significant" delay of the trial — which is set to begin jury selection on April 15 — until the publicity surrounding it "subsides." That request marked Trump's eighth attempt to push back the start of the trial, Bragg noted in his filing Wednesday.

Last week prosecutors asked the judge to clarify or confirm whether the gag order issued earlier in the week including prohibiting Trump from making comments about family members. Last week, soon after the gag order stopping Trump from making statements about witnesses, jurors, prosecutors, court staff or the family members of prosecutors and court staff, Trump launched a series of posts on his social media platform. The gag order did not cover District Attorney Alvin Bragg or the judge. Trump said Merchan was “compromised” and he identified by name the judge’s daughter who works for a political consulting firm. A spokesman for the court said the judge’s daughter deactivated her account two years ago and the posts were not from her.

Trump's legal team is battling prosecutors over a gag order issued this week in his hush-money case. The article focused on how clients of Loren Merchan's company, Authentic Campaigns, used Trump's legal battles to fundraise. While not illegal, some critics argue Loren Merchan's role in promoting progressive politics creates an appearance of a conflict of interest for Judge Merchan. Trump's legal team last year filed a motion urging Judge Merchan to recuse himself due to his daughter's work, per The Times. Trump faced a $10,000 fine in October for violating the gag order in his New York civil fraud trial.

The defense, meanwhile, accused the judge's daughter of having a financial stake in the case. In seeking to expand the gag order, prosecutors are trying "to further restrict President Trump's constitutionally protected speech," the defense wrote. Merchan has yet to say if he will weigh revising or clarifying the gag order. The judge's daughter did not immediately return a request for comment.

Former President Donald Trump shared a video on social media Friday that included an image of President Joe Biden bound and restrained in the back of a pickup truck. The 20-second video, which Trump indicated was taken Thursday in Long Island, New York, shows a truck emblazoned with "Trump 2024" and a large picture depicting Biden tied up and lying on his side. When reached for comment on the image in the video, Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung said, "That picture was on the back of a pick up truck that was traveling down the highway." Trump and Manhattan prosecutors are arguing over the scope of this week's hush-money gag order. AdvertisementLawyers for Donald Trump made an extraordinary request in his hush-money case on Friday: they want state Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan to affirm that Tuesday's gag order lets Trump continue verbally attacking the judge's progressive daughter. Their motion, if allowed, would ask the judge to "direct that defendant immediately desist from attacks on family members." The next step in this battle over Trump's hush-money gag order is now in Merchan's court, so to speak. Alternately, he could expand or clarify the gag order to protect family members, and deny further motions on the topic.

CNN —A sitting federal judge on Thursday harshly criticized Donald Trump’s attacks on the judge overseeing the former president’s criminal case tied to alleged hush money payments, telling CNN that such statements threaten the viability of the American legal system. US District Judge Reggie Walton spoke with CNN’s Kaitlan Collins on “The Source” in the wake of Trump’s attacks on Judge Juan Merchan, which helped prompt the New York judge to issue a gag order on the former president earlier this week. It is unusual for federal judges to speak publicly, especially about specific political or legal situations. Trump criticized Merchan, his daughter and one of Bragg’s prosecutors in the hours before Merchan issued his gag order. Walton, who has been a senior judge of the federal trial level court in Washington, DC, since 2001, told CNN he is speaking out against threats on judges because he is concerned.

CNN —A New York judge has imposed a gag order on Donald Trump, limiting the former president from making statements about potential witnesses in the criminal trial relating to hush money payments scheduled to begin next month. The order does not prevent Trump from talking about New York District Attorney Alvin Bragg, who is a public figure, or Merchan himself. Trump criticized Merchan, his daughter and one of Bragg’s prosecutors in the hours before Merchan issued his order. The district attorney’s office had requested the gag order last month to remain in place for the duration of the trial. In the civil fraud case last fall, Trump was twice fined for violating Judge Arthur Engoron’s gag order and making comments about the judge’s staff.

Yet the moment that history is likely to remember most clearly unfolded in a Manhattan courtroom where Trump sat seething as a judge thwarted his latest delaying tactics and set a date for his hush money trial. Of course, it’s also possible that Trump could be acquitted in this criminal case. It is a mark of the depth of Trump’s legal hole that a reduced requirement to post a bond worth $175 million counts as a big win. Already clashing with another judgeTurning to Judge Juan Merchan, who took the gloss off of the ex-president’s day by scheduling the trial date, Trump issued another bitter complaint. Trump’s looming criminal trial presents a challenge and an opportunity for the Biden campaign.

CNN —Contrary to the popular view that former President Donald Trump has successfully delayed accountability, this week he’s facing a one-two punch that has the potential to inflict lasting damage. Some say that this case, too, serves as an example of Trump’s success at delaying prosecution against him. On March 18, Trump’s lawyers told the court that it was a “practical impossibility” to secure such a large bond. The bottom line, however, is that the New York attorney general is likely going to continue putting liens on Trump’s properties. Whatever delays may be present in those jurisdictions, or in Florida’s Mar-a-Lago documents case, in New York the former president is facing serious hits.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump repeated some familiar baseless claims in remarks on Monday after major developments in two of his New York legal cases. Colangelo and Bragg knew each other before Bragg was elected Manhattan district attorney. The lawsuit emerged from an investigation she began in 2019, roughly two years before Biden succeeded Trump as president. Colangelo served as acting associate attorney general in the first months of the Biden administration in early 2021 and then as principal deputy associate attorney general. Before noon, Merchan had already dismissed the allegations from Trump’s attorneys, ruling there were no violations and that the trial will begin with jury selection on April 15. Trump faced a Monday deadline to post bond or else New York Attorney General Letitia James could have begun the process of seizing his property. ‘It will be my honor to post,’ Trump saysTrump didn’t speak inside the courtroom Wednesday, but he still had plenty of chances to make his views of Monday’s developments known. In the other three, he may yet be successful, though the New York trial is now set to begin in three weeks. Immediately after Merchan’s decision to start the hush money trial next month, Trump’s attorneys sought another way to push back the start of the trial.

Trump’s legal tactic of pursuing delays and elevating smoke-and-mirror sideshows has dramatically increased the odds that any halt of his ascent to the presidency will instead have to come from voters at the ballot box in November. Many experts agree that was Trump’s principal legal “strategy” from the outset. We need at least four delays – delay, delay, delay, delay – when we talk about the Trump strategy to match the four trials,” says Norm Eisen, former special counsel to the House Judiciary Committee during Trump’s first impeachment trial. Eisen says that even with the hiccups prosecutor incurred this week, the delay strategy can only take Trump so far. “I think the delay, delay, delay, delay tactic is going to run out of steam and we’re certain to see one criminal trial of the former president for 2016 election interference and we may very well see multiple trials,” Eisen said.

Trump's felony hush money trial had been scheduled to begin March 25 in Manhattan. Talk of delay was triggered by federal prosecutors producing 73,000 pages of long-awaited evidence. The defense has only dragged its feet in seeking the same evidence, prosecutors said. The assistant prosecutor blamed the late, ongoing evidence dump — and the resulting need for a delay — on federal prosecutors and the Trump defense.
